Does anyone know what happened to Pat Wright, the late starter in 1981 ? I would be nice to know if she finished.

1981-obviously not very well prepared for the number of finishers with that small finish funnel. Imagine that today. Also the crowds were very close to the runners in many places

The commentators were pretty disrespectful of Steve Jones. He was always the class of this field. He was an absolute beast in the marathon. His 2-07 PB was in basic shoes and nutritional supplements, its still the second fastest ever run by UK athlete almost 40 years later 🤯. He could run 2-03-2-04 in todays running technology I have no doubt.

My Daddy ran this in 1984! He was 39, and his time was 3hrs 58mins! We went to watch him, but he did end up on TV! The BBC interviewed a famous motorbike rider after the finish & my Dad walked past behind him! Wish I could see that part again - especially as my Dad is no longer with us!

Charlie was class. Went on to bronze medal at what was the most stacked olympic marathon of all time, in blistering heat. While all around them faded(zalazar, castella) Charlie and John tracey held their nerve. Not forgetting Carlos lopes who won.

Did this race in 3hr 5 min after a heavy carb loading night of Guinness and pasta the night before with Jack Bates of Bingley Harriers. Its kind of become the stuff of legends to the people in the know. You can see me at 1hr 48mins 32 seconds in the Bingley vest blue and white horizontals, shuffling along after a tough night out. Happy days.

@@martinlonsdaleestates9746 Yeah, a different, simpler world all together. That said, I can’t imagine running without the technology of smart watches and Strava. Often wonder how runners measured distances and pace, especially whilst marathon training. Guess there was a lot of guess work involved.

Wonderful. Thank you. This was my first ever marathon, back when I was 18 and some months. I ran in 3:16, I believe, but I really cannot remember for sure. I remember the energy drink was hideous, a powdered mix, but by the time the race was over, I was looking forward to it ... although maybe that drink was introduced the next time I did it, in 1987. Found out yesterday I am in the race in 2021, some 36 years later.

I'm in there somewhere, eventually 1,992nd I think. Other than the days on which my two kids were born, still the best day of my life. Six months training with no injuries and no missed days and completing in a time a quarter of an hour faster than I had planned. 3.13.55.
