Thanks, Paul. One question though: At what point in the downswing does the thumb turn toward the target? Hands at the ball, hands past the ball? Any insights will be appreciated. Thanks again.

Glad you liked it. Thanks so much for your support. Glad you are following the lessons. Some people seem to jump around. It's about building a great swing. Do the 4 position plus grip and setup and you will look like a pro which means you will have the right fundamentals. Reduce the balls you are hitting and do tons of practice swings at home daily. Need you to forget the old swing and do the new one.

Is the palm of the hand resting on the top of the club or is it slightly off the grip with the club resting between the pad on the side of the hand and the fingers (so is there a pocket behind the top of the v in your example).
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Күн бұрын
The club runs from the base of the first knuckle to the pad. So it is not parallel to your knuckles which people seem to insist on teaching which leads to a strong grip and potential overcupping. As I show close the gap between the thumb and side of the hand and it should run perfectly across your palm.

Paul, I ran across your videos about 10 or 11 years ago and that was the first time in my lifelong golfing career that anyone ever told me not to use my arms to power the golf swing. I've tried to do that, with some success, but never 100% successful--so some good days and some bad days. I finally got a vision of treating my arms as two strings of limp, overcooked pasta that could offer no strength whatsoever and, if the body wasn't good enough to get the club off my right side and over to a good finish on the left side, then tough luck because I wasn't going to help it even a little bit. And yesterday I was able to pull off that thought and had the best range session in my entire life. Not only was the ball going farther but the shots were also straighter and higher--beautiful stuff for an 86-year-old. So my point is not just that you are right in what you say but that even you don't go far enough. For example, you say "you are hinging and rehinging your wrists" and, technically, that is true. But it almost implies you are "doing something on purpose". That hinging and rehinging happens automatically if you use your body for 100% of the power and don't use your hands or arms even a little bit to "do something". I don't think this thought can be over-emphasized! Great job, sir!

Then coil up and see if you go beyond 90 degrees and see if you can still see the ball clearly. Close each eye and try it. If you have no problem seeing it or it doesn't look weird then you are good to go. When I close my right eye and swing the ball and club look way smaller than with my right eye open. So you could look for that too.

I started doing speed training, and I gained 20m in a month. I’m 59 and a 3 hcp. I hit it longer than I've ever had. When I started at the age of 12, all the pros said to hit it straight. All my life I couldnt hit it farther than 210m carry or 230 yards with my driver. Its only when I started training my body to hit my driver faster that I saw the impact that it had on my carry distance. Believe me when I say that speed training works. And yes, that applies to older players as well. My swing speed is now around 101 mph with a carry distance of 240m or 260yards.

Speed training can be good. Problem is most people are locked up. So you swing faster still locked up. Why not loosen up first? I just posted a tip on this here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6jYomN9bKuCY8k Get that then do the speed training. I guarantee you are still too tight. Get your wrists loosened up and you get it to 280. One angle that would help me particularly with certain techniques you teach; is from above with a drone or some device to elevate the camera to that spot. It gives the extra perspective. Most of it I'm aware of due to years of practicing your techniques, but for newer golfers and even experienced golfers, it has an opportunity to create that "light bulb" moment.

Hey Paul! Should I put a tee under my right hand, as well? My comfort in hinging involves my right hand pads separating from my left a little bit at the top of my backswing. Then, it rejoins as I downswing. Is that disastrous, or any suggestions?

Man, I just did your ear-2-ear wrist drill today. I only did it for about 1 minute and started swinging, and I instantly started getting better results. I have a bicep pull on my right arm from using someone else's 9 iron at the course the other day, and it hurts very little bit at rest. I went into the backyard this morning, practiced that wrist drill and just relaxed my arms doing 2/3 distance shots. I felt no pain in my bicep with any of the swings, and I was hitting solid shots with my 7 iron. I just rotated my legs and hips, kept my upper body and arms relaxed and allowed my wrists to hinge. I felt completely effortless, and felt good. I wouldn't recommend anyone swinging with an injury like I did, though. I just saw that ear-2-ear drill video and was too tempted not to try it.

Have to try this when hitting 5-wood off a tee. I don’t have a problem with 5-wood from the fairway, but, thinking about my last few rounds, I’ve come OTT on several 5-wood tee shots. It’s always on one hole where I want to fade the ball into the fairway after teeing off over water. Instead, I end up pulling it. Not badly, but my approach to the green in that case is in the 160-yard range instead of 130-140 when I hit the fade correctly. I’d rather have a shorter club for my second shot.

People that are messing around with their grip (tour pros included) are thinking about their stroke and they don't know the percentages. Think about it, a tour pro needs to win to eat. Say they are in a cycle on not sinking putts (which percentages say they will miss more than they make) so what do they do? They start tinkering thinking they will make more putts when really the percentages are not in there favor. So they finally stumble onto something they think is working when really the percentages are swinging more in their favor so they think the change is what did it. All they had to do is know the numbers and fight through the period they weren't making anything. See how they putt great when they get a new putter? They putt great for about a month then lose it again. This is because they new putter feels soo different it takes their mind off of their stroke. After a month they get used to the new putter then start thinking about their stroke again and lose it again. You can do whatever grip you want. You need to know the percentages so you don't keep thinking you are going to make everything. You need to only practice long putts and short putts. If you are great from 50 feet (rarely 3 putting) you will sink your percentages from 12 feet. Putting 12 footers is a total waste of time. Then you need to be target oriented. That is what this tip gets you to do. If you read the comments below I am well over 200 people that replied back at how amazing they are putting now after doing this. So totally up to you what you want to do.

The snap motion helps me make good contact but also causes me to rollover and pull hook about one in 10!swings.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 4 күн бұрын
The problem is you are just like everyone else dwelling on the negative instead of seeing the positive. Every time you pull hook it you need to be jumping up and doing saying YES! HALF RIGHT! You released the club and did not hit the ball with slice spin. SPIN is half. DIRECTION is the other. If you want to do it in 3rds then add CONTACT. So 3 parts to a shot. For this example just think of it in 2 parts. Work on contact once you get the first 2. So wrists affect spin. Body affects direction. Let's say you rolled the wrists and hooked 1,000 balls in a row. High probability you would hook ball 1,001 right? So if I knew the ball was going to hook before you hit it why would I tell you to roll your wrists? This means you mastered half. Now, you remember this feeling of releasing it as you switch your focus on firing your hips. So the first shot you give it a little hips and watch your balls. Now instead of it pull hooking 50 yards left it pull hooks 25. Great. You are getting closer to straight but it still started left. So this tells you you need to fire your legs and hips quicker. So you try again but a little quicker. Now you're 10 yards left. Almost perfect but need to go even quicker. Now you fire super quick and blow it right. This too quick you need to slow down. Understand? The all will tell you exactly what to do. Watch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mH3WnHqvbNeootE So understand what I am saying. See it differently. Then you will know exactly what to look for and what do it.

@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 5 күн бұрын
As you work on the wrist hinge and release you need to manually do it. How do you know you are doing it? You rarely hit the ball with slice spin. Also, your trajectory would be piercing and nice sound to your shots. At this point let it happen as you switch your focus to legs and hips to power the swing. I am not thinking snap or anything. I allow it to happen due to looseness and simple physics.
