My investor bribed banking supervision officials to try and quash our fintech license and give a license to his clone of our service that was making compliance filings with our regulatory documentation. Plan backfired by still killed a company that had already broken even. Madness.

Two events led younger founders to believe "you own what you execute" 1) Zuckerberg's loss in court to the Winklevoss brothers for stealing the idea for Facebook 2) Jack Dorsey's loss in court to Prof. Robert E. Morley Jr. for stealing the idea/technology for Square Inc. I've had co-founders lean on those two guys having huge success after they stole ideas to behave unethically. Those wer bad role models for young founders. Once it becomes known you're not trustworthy, a lot of people will not have anything to do with you, no matter how promising it looks.

Brett, excellent video. I actually thought Non-Compete Agreement were never allowed in California and that was why so many companies in CA could steal employees...but what do I know. On January 1, 2024, California introduced a new statute that makes non-competes unlawful “regardless of where and when the contract was signed.”
@BrettFoxstartupceo5 күн бұрын
Thanks for adding your knowledge. Non competes vary by state, so you need to look at what the restrictions are in your area.

What if your market strategy changes on the path to achieving your vision? Say you start with B2C (direct to patients), then B2B (selling to hospitals), then B2B (data services to pharma)?
@BrettFoxstartupceo17 күн бұрын
It's a great question since this is very likely to happen. If your market strategy changes, then you need to reflect in your pitch in your GTM slide. However, you don't need to change your vision (your long term goals) unless that changes too.

@BrettFoxstartupceo21 күн бұрын
Investors know that, despite the label, conservative estimates are rarely conservative.

I'll never understand this because it makes more sense to tell the truth about your numbers rather than lie and not deliver on unrealistic over the top numbers.
@BrettFoxstartupceo20 күн бұрын
@@deonrichardson5250 thanks for sharing your thoughts. The problem isn't you, it's that investors see too many pitches where the numbers are "conservative" but nothing like that in reality.
