That turned out amazing! I need to get some cable and give it a try. 👍
@jamesball73223 жыл бұрын
Yes it does but I really am not a fan of cable contrast for the amount of work This was more for people to see that you really don’t have to untwist,smack on the ground and also you don’t have to twist it at all to forge it Your already into high level patterns that in my opinion I’d rather spend time on for the outcome versus something that is blah like cable (some like it however 🤷🏽♂️)
@TyrellKnifeworks3 жыл бұрын
@@jamesball7322 I heard part of the point of untwisting it was actually to build up some decarb and that gives it a more pronounced pattern since you're really welding the same steel to itself, its the decarb that help define the pattern. Certainly is a lot of work though.
@jamesball73223 жыл бұрын
@@TyrellKnifeworks yes but that also has the negative affect we call delams or inclusions that surface up later and that’s unacceptable in my book I get the concept but it’s enough that the contrast I get is from borax though I get mirror pattern on both sides,it also depends on the cable of course

I’m just building a forge, cable is the coolest Damascus in my opinion. What size was that chunk to start w? I’m surprised the ends welded as well as they did in that piece
@jamesball73223 жыл бұрын
It was 1.25-1.5 to answer the question So way back when I first searched it was all about squaring up both ends so we could toss it in the vise for use with a twisting wrench and then was told to untwist it and then re-twist it which led to failures So I was like 🤔…well if we could solid weld both ends than why not continue with the counter turn while welding down the entire billet 🤷🏽♂️and bam 💥 …I haven’t even blinked an eye since It just pains me to watch people go through the extra work with all the unnecessary steps and procedures In all honesty it’s all about the flux and welding temp that provides the pattern if all the strands are the same right 😉👊🏼 Oh and my forge is forced air so it will melt steel if left for to long ,not like a coal forge destroys steel but it will melt some steel ✌🏽
