Back when i was in my mid 20's, (A fair while now as i'm 52) for a few years i was a handyman for my local force, Avon and Somerset. I had a lovely cosy little shed in the back of a small suburban station, kitted out with kettle, armchair, landline phone and even a tiny TV. The pay was extremely good for the times, it was a VERY cushy little number! I'd every now and again get a call disturbing my watching of daytime TV and freshly made brew and I'd be asked to come and put together the odd flat-pack desk, some inspector somewhere in the county would want making, or pop a shelf up, etc. One of my other duties was the light maintenance of the forces fleet of vehicles. Any officer would and could bring any vehicle with a problem to me initially and if i couldn't fix the problem i'd drive it, (If still roadworthy) to the forces garage and pass it on to it's mechanics. Like here it still seems, these people REALLY lived the good life! They enjoyed nearly endless breaks. There pay and benefits were ridiculously good for mechanics. They had masses of workspace in which to not to do any work. (indoor footie was work, or outdoor if sunny. I rarely saw them doing anything else) and they'd have zero time limits set to fix anything or talk of one. The mire mention of when you might expect the vehicle you'd bought them to be sorted, would be met with an incredulous look that told you you'd not be being invited for a brew anytime soon and you'd be swiftly handed the keys to whatever was the most likely thing to break down halfway back to the shed. It was small wonder to those in the know why the bill for the fleet was a VERY high one. As nothing got fixed much if at all, all that would happen is once every two weeks or so, brand new vehicles would be bought to me from the docks in Avonmouth (already decaled up if required by a private company) i'd check the oil, tire pressure and that lights and indicators worked and then they'd be issued out.
