I think ik how earthbound generates the giygas defenses became unstable form's background. I think that the background is made of separate rows, each strecthing and contracting differently. In the row's design, the "body" is actually on top, and the "head" and "feet" on bottom. Then the game stacks these rows in such a way that it looks like, well, a fetus. I feel like this explains why the devs didnt notice it looks like a fetus, until years after the release.

There's a lot of very obvious Birth imagery that can't be ignored with Gigyas, but I don't think it's about him being a fetus when you fight him in his Devils machine. Giegue lived in a glass tank in mother 1, and his body is very frail and weak, implying that he does everything with his PSI and that living outside his tank will kill him. Ninten drives him away by reminding him of his humanity and breaking his heart with memories of Maria. The Gigyas in Earthbound is still wallowing in those feelings, and attempting to have himself reborn as a cosmic entity without his heart holding him back. I think he retreated into "the womb" both to shut out his feelings and feel safe in his small way of thinking. I think Porky retreating into his Absolutely Safe Capsule is his version of Gigyas retreating into the womb. He has been beaten physically and his philosophy has been rejected and refuted, so he runs away into a place where he doesn't have to feel his defeat or even his own feelings

the final boss was the background we met along the way That's how I took it atleast. There is no focus but the animated background in every battle the party faced in it most violent incarnation. So it is accurate to say he is everywhere, inconcievable, and ungraspabble. In my subjective take that the party doesn't really see this background during engagement, but the player. This background that is raw litteral abstract conflict in suffering, opposition, pain, survival etc. "Gigas has become the evil power , not the one who wields it- an all mighty idiot". Something that signals the occurance of a struggle and stress to the party but ultimately undetected except by the player. He is everything and nothing at once.Only to be vanquished by an equally abstract concept like miraculous prayer, a ceasing of conflict. Although, he is at his most incorporial and powerful form when he is encountered head on with nigh hope of being conquered, he is at the the same time just as easily. Bc there is no vessel, no vessel stricken by his madness with a focused "why", with limitations but boundless resources in malicious ambitions to keep going. That is why he could so easily be vanquished with a prayer, the ceasing of conlfict. A call to peace, bc theres no more fuel to drawn upon. For that one moment, and that's all it took. But realize, such a collaboration indeed is just as ungrasspable, bc world peace is the biggest laughing stalk in human history. For it to be a palpable thing indeed is miraculous, bc evil is the far more common element. Ergo Ness' party had to have done a lot to gain that gratitude and collaboration for the world to set aside their petty ambitions- the thing that drives giygas and assist the party. This is indicative to me when Porky so nonchalantly, despite being his henchmen, later on refers to him as an "all mighty idiot" with such irreverance. He was no different than the mani mani statue per that point. I assume what Porkey reffered to as "master" was still a being that had an ambitious directive in its corporeal state -Giyug. But Porkey had interacted enough with the Giygas element to realize he had simply become a litteral force or element to be reconned with that could not harbor grudges from his petty antics.

Little theory of my own with Giygas I suppose: all symbolism aside for a moment, the only reason Ness's name sticks with Giygas even through the destruction of its mind is both because it was held within the Apple for its own safety during travel to the past and was forced to see the prediction it made over and over. Thus, its urge to stop Ness from stopping its plan to take over the world is imprinted within its being- at least it is when the DM is shut off- and sticks with it even as it loses its mind.

I can see how some of the evicence like the fleshy looking room and some of the dialog and imagery would lead to some of this thought. But the idea that 'Giygas is a fetus you're aborting' feels like one of those edgy theories about shows like 'the rugrats all died and are a figmint of Angelica's imagination' that sounds edgy and subversive but doesn't really hold up to scrutiny.

I'd reccomend watching "Gaming Mysteries: EarthBound; My Porky Minch theory explained." by Matémon, as i think he nailed a very compelling theory that flew over almost everyone's heads, and that might help reconciliate Giygas's apparent absence from Earthbound, dialogues expressing how he's experiencing "hardship", and how he seems to be "attacking from the past."
@Brendanowl2 ай бұрын
Don't know the lore of earthbound, but ill give it a try. Giygas looks to me like a mad man, some kind of mad scientist, who experimented on himself, or shot himself full of power, and then his body fell apart and he turned into a formless beast. Or something. Reminds me slightly of gaster from undertale.

I think a lot of creators such as the creator of Evangelion or the one of chainsaw man say they don’t have deep themes to them or didn’t have something particularly in mind often just that stuff to not offend fans who have different interpretations. At least I think that’s the case with very popular media that is intentionally a little ambiguous

My theory is that Teddy was probably supposed to be obtained earlier on, as in the pre release clips it shows Teddy with Ninten and Ana in locations normally not necessary after you get him, like the mansion and Snowman. Lloyd might have also been later on as well

I've never liked this theory either. I feel like it's completely hinged on the infant image, which I think actually is coincidental. I saw someone point out that the Giygas image flipped upside down actually looks quite similar to what he liked like in the original game. I prefer thinking that that was intentional more than inserting an image of a baby. Because Giygas wasn't always evil and was not always opposed to humanity. I think the image being the upside down version of what he used to be highlights his corruption, and that he's now a fully evil entity.

The fact you used "George Castanza" for the character "George" makes me think Mother was one long insane story told by both Kramer and George and Jerry wasnt believing a word of it >Jerry: Lemee get this straight. You went into space. You found an advanced alien civilization. You found an indescribable eldrich horror beyond your mortal comprehension and you learned... >Kramer: PSI Jerry. >Jerry: Uh-Huh. OK. Now tell me, what is that? Is it some kind of vinerial disease? >George: Get this. I can control the elements now. >Jerry: ...I dont believe you. On top of that I cant believe you >Kramer: Its true Jerry, he can also teleport >Jerry: No he cant. >George: But only if I run real fast in a straight line >Jerry: Stop. That right there proves youre lying to me. The only time ive ever seen you run is to get food.

I always hated that theory because it completely invalidates Giegue's character. We know Giegue was raised by Maria, we know he loved and cared for her as she raised him and that hearing her song hurts him as what he's been forced to become by his species does not mesh with how he was raised. I agree with Giygas symbolizing trauma and loss of innocence, but I also think that he's a result of not being able to overcome his own conflicting thoughts between the conquering of Earth and his love for Maria. He's in a pitiable state.

This is a hot take, but I think what was in the box was going to corroborate Dream Theory, which is no longer canon. A few years ago, back when ScottGames was still online, he indirectly communicated with MatPat and the Game Theory crew during a GTLive stream and alluded to the idea of the (then) four Five Nights at Freddy's games being dreams had by the protagonist of the fourth game. I do sincerely think Dream Theory was canon at one point, as there are plenty of hints in Five Nights at Freddy's 4 to imply the series was a series of nightmares. I think Scott abandoned the idea because the hints were vague enough to forget about in-game, and because he worried about how the fandom would feel about none of the games having any emotional significance. Also, as of August 2024, Scott confirmed in his 10th Anniversary Q&A with Dawko that the box is no longer canon, at least at this point in time.

I don't understand the complains, I never got stuck in this game, rather I got stuck in Metroid for NES for a whole month with 6 hours of play throughs almost every day and yet was a really fun time, that's part of the experience, If I remember correctly, Earthbound beginnings take me around three weeks to compleat playing daily and without a guide or previous knowledge, I was completely black, and I'm not completely sure but apparently I didn't use the storage mechanic.

I didn't have any problems with the melodies locations, I found it relatively easy and without a guide, just exploring (also exploring leads you to rise your level, this is also present in Final Fantasy I).

I didn't have any problems with the game, all comes naturally and organic and I never get stuck, I think this is a cultural difference because a lot of USA players complains all the time about Japanese difficulty in games, (fighting games, shootem ups games, JRPG games) in my country almost all difficult Japanese games become fan favorites and are among the most beloved games, is like our spicy food, to foreigners is uneatable but for us is breakfast, the same with punishing videogames, they are so delicious to play.

Why do people get so offended by the fetus theory? Developers play around with ideas all the time and are not always honest. I don't blame him for not playing into it. I honestly like the idea of Giygas being upside down though. The creators did their part, they created somethint controversial and people are STILL talking about it.
