Do you have a good source for parts for that machine? I bent/broke the aluminum plate that you removed to get to the blades.
@HomesteadDIY
@HomesteadDIY 7 күн бұрын
Unfortunately I don't. I just checked the unit at the Harbor Freight website and the only available parts for replacement are the blades. If I'm not mistaken, the part you're looking for is the blade defend block. I did an internet search and could find zero options for it. I found two British companies selling one for about 23 pounds ($30), and while they look close to the Portland style, I don't think they're an exact match (www.einhell-service.com/en_GB/343033001016.html). I'm not sure if it would just be more worthwhile to buy a whole new chipper for that that price, once you include shipping. While HF owns the Portland brand, it says it is supplied by the same companies that supply the major brands. There are pretty much only about 4 companies that actually make power tools and they slap different branding on all the products. I think a Hong Kong-based company called Techtronics is the biggest, though I don't know if it makes Portland products. It does make Milwaukee, Ryobi, and a bunch more. It means finding small parts for these products may be impossible to find if HF (or other brands) aren't stocking them.

No, they were just regular potatoes. I ended up getting a decent harvest out of them too, despite several setbacks early in the year due to a couple of surprise late frosts (3 of them!). I think that hurt my overall yield as the potatoes had to rally back each time, expending a lot of energy in the process, but the harvests were still good.

Thanks! It's held up great over the past few years, other than a few hurricanes tearing the plastic sheathing. This year I used greenhouse plastic because the price became dramatically cheaper than in the past (the one thing that's not more expensive than it was a few years ago) and it's been terrific. I haven't had a single tear in it, and that may be because the greenhouse plastic is tougher and more durable than the generic plastic sheathing I used before.

I can manually move the blades, clockwise, and counterclockwise (checked when unplugged); the circuit breaker button is not popped up; the extension cord I use is still working since I tested that on a different appliance; there is no debri stuck in the machine. I've found I've had to wait a few minutes in pressing the the circuit breaker button to reset it. A number of times when it has been tripped, if I try to press it right away, it doesn't reset, but letting it sit and then pressing it it starts back up. If that doesn't help the only thing I can think of is the fuse inside is blown. I haven't had to try and replace that yet, but I'm going to guess you may be able to unscrew it.

I just looked up the exploded view of the chipper shredder in the manual and the only thing I see that might be the problem is the capacitor (Part No. 41). It doesn't seem to have anything else. It also looks like you would have to disassemble the housing as it seems to be connected to the motor. manuals.harborfreight.com/manuals/69000-69999/69293-193175327277.pdf

One more thing. I just remembered the housing has a metal tab that fits into a slot at the top of the unit. You probably already did this, but make sure its properly seated in the slot. Also, that tab probably completes a circuit in some fashion. You might want to check there to see if there is a blockage of sorts or some other problem.

Been using the cheap one over 2 years, heres what I've learned. 1. Build a frame to mount the door on, then bench test it to make sure it goes up and down smoothly, if not put sims by the top screws between the outer plastic frame and the inner tops strip. 2. Once working screw that to your opening. 3. If the door is low enough, sometimes the chickens will scratch and throw dirt on it and it will stop working. 4. Some times shims will slip, or what ever and you might have to readjust it. 6. To make sure it opens and closes at the right time, I put a timer with a light in front of the sensors. 7. After 2 years the inside plastic gear that's on the main shaft has stripped, trying to epoxy it but I'm not sure if it will stay. All in all, the cheap one will work pretty consistently, but you have to keep and eye on it. Definitely worth the money, and a much better deal than $200. I think I paid $15-$20 for mine and I could buy 10 to 15 for $200, which would last me 20 to 30 years. I dont' think the $200 one will last me that long.

Glad the cheap one is working out for you. Many will make do with it and be fine. I do prefer the peace of mind that's come from the Run-Chicken model. I've had the original one for 3 years now and it has operated flawlessly. I've never once had to tinker with it or hope that the door actually closed and some predator didn't get in. In fact, the original set of batteries that came with it are still operating. That must be some kind of record. lol I was so impressed with it I installed a second one on the chicken run (where I tested the cheap model). It too has been running flawlessly for about 2 years now. As I said, the peace of mind is worth it to me.
