I was hoping you would tell me what an under painting is and why it's important. You share the video with the idea that your viewers understand color theory. Hopefully I will find a video with a more simple explanation.

do you have to spray fixative over the sketch before your underpainting?

In hopes of anyone seeing this comment and able/willing to answer: When using an underpainting, do you... - want to avoid painting completely opaque at all so that you still see the underpainting shining through? - want the underpainted paint to reactivate while painting over it (almost like a way of using a mother colour) or try to avoid that?

Ive had amazing experiences with this brand and I use all types of fancy paper pads and sketchbooks and for the price is a great deal. It's too bad I cant show you my work here but I just keep on buying them. It's not fancy paper but for practicing and not trashing your fancy ones this is pretty good, love the texture. Just to be clear, for the butter consistency, are you supposed to go in with a completely dry paintbrush? or is the brush like preset and patted dry? I’m mostly having trouble with conceptualizing brush wetness i think….

Nice video, but owls do not usually have shorter wings. They need larger, softer wings to be able to flap less. The majority of owls are ambush predators and do not need to be agile. A bird who is agile and has shorter wings would be a falcon. They are fast and agile with slender short wings for fast movement. Because they have shorter wings, they must flap more, but they do not need the cover of silence, as they chase down their prey.

Isn’t there a difference between toned ground and an underpainting? I thought an underpainting was a rough sketch in a single color of thin paint… And toned ground is when you use a color to tone the entire painting surface so that it shines through and affects the results of the Finished painting as you have shown here. Are these terms interchangeable?

So interesting thank you! I tried it for the first time and I thought I was going crazy- i let a wash dry completely for two days and then came back to put in some details and wheni put my brush with paint onto the wash it spread out like the wash was still wet!
