I was surprised Jonathan endorsed Richard Bushman and didn’t think he was a big fan of him . Due to the fact Richard Bushman is the one of the historians spear heading certain ideas of cultic magical forces during the translation process, using the seer stone to translate instead of the UT, and the use of 2nd, 3rd hand accounts over first hand accounts. I like Jonathan , but it seems he is riding on the coat tails of all the work Hannah Stoddard has done but people seem to brush her aside and not take her seriously. I think the church historians have not done any favors to the church with the Saints book and church essays. It was their chance to come clean but they blew it again. Did it shake my testimony. No. It just only enforces the idea that we all need to do our own research like the Stoddards and Jonathan ,who are not “trained” experts . If they can figure it out then so can we. Most importantly stay close to the basics of Joseph Smith was called of God, the Book of Mormon was translated by the power of God, Jesus is the Christ and God is our Father in Heaven. The rest as you were trying to say is fluff.

Hi there. Are you on a laptop/desktop computer, or mobile phone? On a regular computer, just select text with your mouse and a toolbar will appear. On mobile, you touch a verse to open it in an editor and use your finger to hold down on a word then use the drag points to select the start and end points and then use the bar above to mark the verses. On the mobile app home page, click tutorial 3 to see how to mark the scriptures.

I looked at this video hoping to see HOW you mark scriptures using Scripture Notes - in other words where is the icon for the marker? there is nothing in HELP that seems to cover this. At least nothing obvious.

About the 1:40 mark you can see me select text and a toolbar pops up. I've been meaning to catch up with some newer videos on how to use the features better. I'll try to make that a priority to get done asap. On mobile, you touch a verse to open it in an editor and use your finger to hold down on a word then use the drag points to select the start and end points and then use the bar above to mark the verses. On the mobile app home page, click tutorial 3 to see how to mark the scriptures there.

One of those moments that jumps out and causes you to catch your breath happened to me when I read 2 Ne 9:41. We always hear and read, " Straight is the gate and narrow is the way . . ." This statement always made me feel like I was already defeated. I was sure I was wobbling all over the place and how was I ever going to know if I was on the straight and narrow path and how could I stay on it. Of course, I reminded myself of the iron rod, but was that all? Then I read this passage, "Behold the way for man is narrow (feeling a little disheartened for a moment but then it added), but it lieth in a straight course before him." It really says the same thing but this wording gave me hope. Point my nose, my eyes, my heart and mind towards Christ and keep moving and I'll make it.

I really enjoy scripture notes for studying and gathering thoughts and information about the scriptures. What I can not find is a way to take scriptures and notes created inside of the program to an outside tool such as adobe indesign where I am writing a book. I feel like I'm locked inside of scripture notes with no way to export my study material or a part of it to my work project.

I have export options on each pane so you can export verses and notes from a chapter, search results, or collection notes. In the future I plan to have robust export options including beautifully formatted PDF's suitable for printing.

The first angel could have been Lucifer. There are texts that indicate his rebellion came from an assertion that Michael/Adam essentially stole his role--that he [Lucifer] was "older," so thus entitled to be the first man.

This is a great book. Dave's theory about there being ritual blows as part of ancient temple worship struck me as odd for a while. I was talking with an elderly woman at church who converted about a year or so ago about her Catholic upbringing. She shared how as a part of their confirmation ritual the person being confirmed was slapped on the cheek by the priest. She said they discontinued this some years ago it but it was part of what she experienced and she indicated she did not find it pleasant. Reading online it seems others got a light slap or tap of the palm on their cheek but not the more shocking slap that others received. I guess it depended on the Priest?? On hearing this from her I was immediately reminded of what I've read in Dave's books and heard him speak about and wondered if this wasn't carried over from the past. She indicated she didn't know why they did that and I said it could perhaps be a leftover from ancient temple rituals but that it was not something we practiced in our temples today. I said that because she is preparing to go through the temple herself soon and she understands the concept of the apostasy.

Give me a break please . Catholic are crazy ok . They even have some who whip themselves . David Butler is crazy too . He even says it is his theory . Ok will his theory is wrong . There was never a ritual slapping any one in the face . Or cheek . He even says Nephis brother beating him up was a temple ritual . No it was an evil neither beating him up and even trying to kill him and even wanting to kill his father . Has nothing to do with any ancient temple ritual . The gut is loosing his mind and people are swallowing this balony . Why do you people believe theories ? Why ? This guy is not a prophet . He has some crazy ideas and theories . I just wish our leaders could hear what he is teaching . He never quits. Mary and heavenly mother are the tree of life . No they are not . Jesus is the tree of life . He teaches different doctrines then our leaders do .

What could our Royal priestly hosts in our Church accomplish if all endowed members understood to awake, arise, put on your robes, come out of Babylon, issue a clarion call to come to Zion, make covenants for personal purity, faith, hope, charity toward all, malice toward none, blessing the land to receive her kings and queens of righteousness, to institute peace and harmony among our community. May we NOW choose to all be made lesser “kings of righteousness” (melchi-zedek) to be kept “in the name”, to be endowed with real and true power from on high, call down angels to assist in the gathering work, to command the dismissal of dark entities, to provide a place of refuge for those seeking to escape the captivity and chains of demons and principalities. We need to study the B of M on a whole ‘nother level!! Ask, seek, knock, knock, knock…to have the scales of darkness fall from our eyes and open to Wisdom, to offer ourselves wholly up as servants to the Most High for His work of gathering in the Harvest. I want the next volume of the B of M…so study up people!! 😊

Someone asked what is the next step after experiencing the "mighty change of heart"? I would answer by referring back to Elder Renlund's BYU Devotional talk in which he used the metaphor of a car climbing a mountain road. This climb represented the "enduring to the end" portion of the Doctrine of Christ. It is cycling thru the doctrine of Christ each week and linked together with the Ordinance of the Sacrament that when partaken worthily authorizes the Holy Ghost to cleanse and purify us as we become more and more Born Again, going from Grace to Grace until we are perfect in Christ Jesus! The initial Baptism of Fire places us on the covenant path to the tree of life and then with that added endowment of the gift of the Holy Ghost we are more and more Born Again!

My study of late has led me to look for three characters: the prophet, priest, and king. (see Abraham 1:2 for a chiasmus-of-ideas on this.) Going through this, I see Moses in the first room, teaching how to be a prophet. Elijah in the second room teaching how to be a priest. Jesus in the third room, teaching how to be a king. I may be off and am definitely incomplete in this idea, but it continues to develop in my study. (On chiasmus in Joseph Smith's work: I have seen a few, but rarely in Joseph's use of language. Rather they appear to me in the underlying ideas.)

Great content With respect to Melchizedek, we know he was Shem, the son of Noah, and that Salem was an actual city which was translated like the city of Enoch. Jerusalem according to Hugh Nibley means "New Salem". Just an FYI kind of thing.

Thank you for acknowledging that Nibley saw this. If you watch Nibley’s Book of Mormon class published by FARMS Nibley goes to Egypt and his student aide (Jack Welch) teaches the units on third Nephi and the Temple Sermon. So Welch is teaching off Nibley s notes. So when you have humbly given credence to Jack Welch I have always wondered, does he know Welch taught Nibley class on this subject matter? It’s probably Nibley who saw this? But it doesn’t really matter what is sad is that for 20-30 years we as a body of temple initiates have been generally blind to this. Who knows what energy has been lost letting it sit dormant for so long? Imagine the strength parents trained in this would have passed on to the rising generations.

Yeah, I only realized after writing ADAM that I had probably absorbed some of these ideas from Nibley without realizing it, thirty years ago. I did a very short chat with the Paul brothers about it, pointing out some specific points in TEMPLE AND COSMOS and THE MESSAGE OF THE JOSEPH SMITH PAPYRI. And it is embarrassing that Nibley would say this stuff over and over and we (I) didn't get it.

There is plenty of evidence of ancient secret mystery rites/plays in the old world. It is easy to believe there was a first version that was given by the true prophets. But then other versions were developed by people that rejected the prophets. So the Mormon endowment is not anything new The Jewish Tikkun Leil Shavuot, though medieval in origin, is along the same lines. And it is easy to believe that Lehi had a version in the old traditions that he had been taught. Here is a video that explains why I am certain that Melchizedek was NOT Shem: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHqUqoWKeJuefac

Going along with Melchizedek as a name for Christ when encountering the veil, Ether 3:1, 6-13 has the brother of Jared being told to arise, then he sees the flesh and blood of the Lord through the veil and is brought into His presence, all in a place called Shelem. Even though Melchizedek doesn't show up explicitly, the imagery of the flesh and blood, the veil, and Shelem/Salem is striking. Moroni says in v. 17 that he doesn't make a full account of the experience, so who knows if Melchizedek was mentioned in the original account of Ether/brother of Jared?

43:00 Looking at the other names in the Book of Mormon, I've seen a good case for Cumorah, Moroni, Mormon, etc coming from the Egyptian root MR meaning water. Also notice how authors add descriptions usually in parallel with names. For instance, waters of Mormon, or "hill Cumorah; and it was a land of many waters, rivers, and fountains." There is more to it, but that's the basic idea.

President [Charles A.] Callis make this statement: that after the Book of Mormon came forth the Prophet Joseph was terribly worried about what the world would say, and he said, ‘O Lord, what will the world say?’ And the answer came back, ‘Fear not, I will cause the earth to testify of the truth of these things,’ and from that day until now, and only the Lord knows what is yet ahead, external evidences have been brought forth of the divinity of that book.”3 Callister, Tad R..
