I just took over care of my estranged father after my toxic brother abandoned him. His home was disgusting. I’ve been working on it, but there is still more to do. I’m afraid if someone came in now & saw his toilet they might charge me with neglect but it’s way better than it was and I’m going the best I can. He is falling through the cracks as he makes too much SS to receive any assistance, but does not have anywhere near enough assets to pay for care.

You must check on the elderly on a regular basis even if they are in a reputable nursing home. My mother in-law fell and broke her neck, because she was stubborn and would not call for help to use the restroom. Was not abuse, just sneakiness on her part, pride maybe. The other key factor is to know when they are incapacitated. If someone is close, they cannot recognize it. My mother in-law put an entire loaf of bread down the garbage disposal because she did not want to go to the garbage outside……not normal. My wife asked her one day what she was doing, reply: oh just trying to stay warm. It was cold but further inquiry found that the heater had stopped working 3 days earlier. Very simple fix but she did not want to ask. All these were signs of something being “off”. Recognizing and reacting are key.

I think producing this video wasn't easy. It wasn't easy to listen to. Humanizing the abused is important. Kindness and respect need to be the priority. When you go outta the box, you go. Enjoyed the video.

This happened to my Mother-in-Law. It can happen to anyone. Once one child gets a POA they can keep all of the other children in the dark once the parent is considered incompetent, which doesn't take much. Fortunately my MIL suddenly became competent when I asked some very pointed questions of the hospice facility she was in and she was able to recind the POA my Sisters in Law had. We later found out that the other two sister had stolen about $9,000 of her money and lied to her about how much money she had. It caused my wife and her sisters to be estranged to this day. Be very careful folks it can happen to you. This is not the only case of this I know of, just the one closest to home.

Thanks, also be aware if you have to move your loved one to a assisted/memory care facility, unfortunately you almost have to take anything of value from them just because “Thing’s” just disappear! We went through this with both my FIL and my mother! It’s sad to have to do this but when things just start disappearing it takes a bit for you to realize what is happening!

Such sad stories! Great information! My uncle stole everything my Grandmother had. She trusted him without hesitation. He stuck her in a nursing home that was disgusting! It was eventually closed because of elder abuse. My Grandmother broke her leg and ended up dying from the infection that she got from it. Of course nobody knew how she broke her leg. She was wheelchair bound so she was obviously abused physically! Physically abused by the nursing home & financially abused my Uncle. Then my Uncle had the nerve of suing the nursing home where he put her! Thank you for doing this video Tracey!
