Are we gonna be able to add/reposition light sources on our ships?

At this point no. There is a player-held light source though -- and individual lights can be toggled on/off.

In general this looks very promising, but the overly excessive elasticity of the ropes should get rid of. It's visible with sheets but most clearly with the ropes heaving the small boat. Hope it'll get addressed before release. Otherwise, this is really promising.
@2eightnine
@2eightnine Күн бұрын
Thanks. It's definitely a known issue with the ropes. It's a bit of a balancing act between performance and looks -- as to get the springyness down I have to crank up the Burst math iterations. For the masts I can solve that with hidden joints -- but I want to limit their use as much as possible as they've got their own cons.

Coming along nicely! What you've done on you own is truly impressive. You have quite a range of talents. The modeling and overall aesthetic is fantastic. Seeing these recently inhabited (?) foggy islands with medieval architecture evokes memories of the game "Myst" and makes me curious about the mysteries that may be discovered on them!

As a simmer, there are two titles I'm looking forward to this year. One is MSFS 2024, and the other is Following Seas. The fact that i'm equally excited for both, is a testament to how much you have achieved @2eightnine with this title. You have my continued, long term support as I know that it will take time to realise your vision.

The "GMT vs local noon" method is also used in Sailwind. Don't think it'll be too complicated. or you can do this: have a "book" that you can type numbers into it (simulating looking it up). You enter these information: GMT time observed moon elevation (using sextant) today's date (if you have seasons and/or lunar calendar), or perhaps "tonight is the night between X and Y date" your latitude (affects moon trajectory) the book directly gives you the longitude. From my understanding this should be doable IRL, except you have to go through tables. The "input date into a book" method omits the unnecessary lookup process.

the only negative criticism I would have(caveat it's VERY early etc etc) is that either everything is massive, or you're incredibly short as the Player, I know you'll probably sort that out, everything else looks amazing, and I am SO looking forward to it!, The Ships look amazing, the details are fantastic!, Sailors, Sim lovers and Patrick O'Brian fans will love this game!. A VR version would lead to me refurbishing my Shed and turning it into a SimShip. Seriously.
@2eightnine
@2eightnine 10 күн бұрын
Thanks. :) I've got that from a few people, and it's been a struggle to sort out what scale is out. Just general walking, or being on the ships? The scale should be about right -- but I get that games often have to muck up scale objects to get things to look 'right' so I'm definitely open to adjustments.

Will we get proper three mast full rigged sailing ships or is it just gonna be these junk style vessels?
@2eightnine
@2eightnine 12 күн бұрын
My focus is on ship designs from Asia, the Iberian Peninsula, and parts of India. So there may be some square riggers in the future -- but it's mostly going to be lateen rigs, junk rigs, and similar styles. While the time period of my selected ships is kind of nebulous -- it largely predates the complex large styles of the 17th and 18th century.
@RedDeerTC
@RedDeerTC 12 күн бұрын
@@2eightnine dang, was hoping there would be some full rigged ships. If it’s 15th and 16th century that we’re focused on, is there any chance we’d see the likes of caravels and carracks, and their cut down variants? Or if it’s smaller ships we’re focusing on, perhaps we could do brigs or sloop of war?

Back before his wife developed Alzheimers, my grandfather maintained a 40' ocean going sailboat and a 26' freshwater one. The 40'er relied on a minimum of 4 hired crew, but I can remember trips with more. My grandad could sail the smaller boat himself. Regarding the beached ship at 1:52... appears to be at least 60'... two lanteen-rigged masts... you'd need at least a dozen people just to make sail. The game looks beautiful, but I do like some AoS reality. Will the simulation be reflecting that reality, or will we be "pretending?" Whatever the decision, it's coming along. We can always use more sail simulations.
@2eightnine
@2eightnine 14 күн бұрын
There's definitely a degree of fudgery going on -- I'm aware it would be impossible to handle ships of this size solo. I do plan eventually on a kind of hired crew to make things easier/quicker, but as a gameplay concession I've set things up to be manageable solo.
@jcas9362
@jcas9362 9 күн бұрын
@@2eightnine I'm not familiar with the whole storyline of your game, but it's possible that you might be pushing fairly significant content too soon. A smaller ship - one just barely controllable by a single individual in an era without modern sailing equipment - might be a better option to introduce the various basic control mechanisms and basic sailing concepts, as well as adding the concept of proper crewing - something that is pretty important in sailing, no matter what era you're in. In the case of the AoS, a difference in crew quality could mean being able to escape a looming lee shore, out-sailing an adversary, or surviving a storm. Being able to hire a small crew, who could then gain experience, would allow the player to have a competent nucleus when transferring to a larger vessel. Might be fun :-)

In my opinion, a game with such depth should be played also and above all with a VR headset. I hope the developer takes it into serious consideration.
@2eightnine
@2eightnine 15 күн бұрын
It's on the wishlist -- but it's not a main goal. I don't want to exclude the vast majority of players without access to headsets -- and while I think the immersion would be great, I feel it runs a high risk of becoming tiring quickly, as there's a lot of extended sailing without much action.

Sailwind is a great game, definitely an influence in some areas, but the same could be said for most first person 'boat' games, the old Sea Dogs games and some older immersive sims were also big influences. Sailwind as a project focuses a lot more on economy, ship customization, and survival elements, while FS (aims) to focus more on immersion, setting, and ship operation.

@@2eightnine The reason I left the comment is because the actual UI elements look almost copied from Sailwind. I'm not bashing your project, I really hope this takes off, because as far as I know, there is only one realistic sailing simulator right now: Sailwind.
