Was a logger/forest-firefighter most of my life. Production was money, so used full-comp chisel chains. Retired now, so have been going with skip tooth semi-chisel chains, since I mostly cut firewood now and fast production no longer matters.

It's the way to go in clean forests. Thankfully we have no need for forest-firefighters in the soggy UK, just as well - that's a job not many are up to doing. Makes a dangerous job even worse under intense pressure. Good lad.

I bought a Stihl Duro chain for $70. I used it three times for about 5 to 10 minutes each. Then the chain came off. I soon noticed that the chain had stretched almost 2 inches. Can I do anything to shrink it back to it's original length?
@JamesTheForester17 күн бұрын
If the chain has been thrown off the saw when it was running then it may actually have been damaged. I would inspect it carefully and probably replace it. that is a lot of stretch 😳
14 күн бұрын
@JamesTheForester Yeah it's stretched about an inch. Stihl Duro saw blade. If I only had a 15" Stihl bar... 😆

It is a good tip for sure. The only downside to leaving the chain loose at end of session is a potential injury if someone else were to use chainsaw without knowing chain and bar is loose. Fully removing chain off bar and just let it hang would probably (you would hope) deter someone from just starting it up without checking. Happy chainsawing!
@JamesTheForesterАй бұрын
That's a really good safety tip if you are likely to have inexperienced people using your kit without permission. It happens!

Great tip and excellent explanation. I just bought an expensive saw and will do this from now on. I can see how running it with the chain too tight can ruin a lot of parts. Hopefully the saw will last a long time now that I’ll take your suggestions. Thanks!

A good point that I hadn't really considered, even though I'm used to playing my guitar in warm pubs, needing to re-tune as the instrument warms up. Next day, I take it it out of the case and the tuning is way sharp. Basic physics I guess!

Uhh, I'm not sure about this. I always check and adjust the chain tension before I start cutting. Usually, when I'm done cutting, the chain is already loose, so there's no need to loosen it unless I only cut for a few minutes, but that rarely happens.
@JamesTheForesterАй бұрын
Hi. Thanks for the comment. I'd say its generally advised to keep your chain snug as it expands to stop it throwing and wearing the bar as it wobbles in the bar rails. 🙂
@anonymous_friendАй бұрын
Some of my chains have stretched to where the tensioner has maxed out. Is it safe to remove a link from it and spin a new rivet to continue using it?
@JamesTheForesterАй бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment. I would say no to that - not when the chain has already stretched - it will be close to it's limit and it can only stretch so far without breaking. Time to treat yourself to a new chain!
@richyf194Ай бұрын
Good video James. How do you address any gap issues with the bar? Especially if the gap has widened and there's slack?
@JamesTheForesterАй бұрын
Hi. Thanks for the comment. Do you mean the gap between the two bar rails ?
@richyf194Ай бұрын
@@JamesTheForester Yes, that’s it. I’ve seen people using a tool to squeeze the rails back together again but I can’t find anywhere reputable that sells them. I just wondered if it was something you do.
@JamesTheForesterАй бұрын
Hmm, never seen a tool like that. But these are my thoughts - safety driven as ever : bars are machined to tight tolerances because they need to work in partnership with both the chain drive links and bar oil, and oiler mechanism. If the rails were splayed outwards I would not like to try and bend them back in - it suggests some major issue has occurred - serious chain throwing at speed maybe - but bars are made out of metal much harder than chain drive links re, so in the case of a chain throw the chain is damaged not the bar. So splayed rails mean something major has gone on. In such a case, if you bent the bar rails back into place by hand the chain might still not run true or oil properly and the bar itself might be weakened. I view bars as sacrificial items, they wear down in normal use anyway and are quite cheap to replace. BUT BEWARE! - are you sure it's not the chain drive links wearing thin? Making it seem like the rails are loose?

I always hold the tip of the bar up and then finish tightening the two nuts.

@JamesTheForesterАй бұрын
That was me! Somewhere else in the comments I explain it got pinched in a cut the tree was on the ground and the only way I could use a second saw to free it meant I couldn't see the chain brake to avoid it. I think somewhere else there is a video of me changing the chain brake for a new one.
