quicker way for history is click where to then click History I have been using this nav for just over a year all good exept you cant search address zip with voice command where with the old devices ok Garmin search zip then say zip.

do the 66 or 76 include lifetime maps or just x amount of years since you activate it??
@sat1033 күн бұрын
As long as you remember to update at least once a year (which means turn on the Garmin Wi-Fi update once a year and let it download any updates it needs to), and as long as the model is not listed here (this list only has very old models that Garmin no longer has map support for) support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=FbLi6qISMH8vJG5A1p9tW5 then you should receive map updates for several years. I do not know exactly how many years.

I'm loving the Garmin Drive app with the 66! It's nice to have gas prices, weather, good traffic, and Alexa playing songs all at once. One of the best features is being able to type the address I'm looking for into the app and having it sent immediately to the GPS. OR I can look up something in Google maps and directly share the coordinates to the GPS. Thanks for posting these great videos!

Tempted to get another Garmin I currently love my 2599 but what do you think is the best upgrade?
@sat1034 күн бұрын
The only real upgrade you could get would be a DriveSmart 66 (as in "full" version and not "EX" model), and only because it has the on-map Turns feature that the 2599 does not as seen here kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIDTiIyImdqbpbs However, this is *only if you feel you need that feature*. If you like the 2599 the way it is and it serves you well, then the best thing to buy would be another 2599 in good condition as a backup, along with a new 32GB microSD memory card for map data storage.
@mariannelanger74234 күн бұрын
I like the DriveSmart 51, 61, etc which gives 2 things over the 2599 - Shows actual names in the UP AHEAD feature….for example it will show actual name of closest restaurant. In unfamiliar rural areas, it’s useful as you can get a sense of area if there’s a Cracker Barrel versus a Cleets Hot Dog stand. - Has WiFi upgradable maps.
@Blackmamba123454 күн бұрын
@@sat103Thanks for the insight. Yes that's a good feature I wish the 2599 had that instead of having to click to see the turns. I might get one but yeah I do like the 2599 lmt one I did buy a memory card and upgraded to the latest maps. I think I might get a Drivesmart 66 but yes ATM just like using the 2599. Does the Drivesmart have a built in traffic receiver? Guessing it must do?
@Blackmamba123454 күн бұрын
@@mariannelanger7423Good points yes thanks for the insight. Sounds useful.
@sat1034 күн бұрын
@@Blackmamba12345 The 'full' (meaning *not* EX) 66 has the traffic receiver and same traffic reporting capabilities as any nuvi with LMT in its model name. Also keep in mind with a 66 you'll be switching from mini USB to USB-C. You have to use the provided Garmin USB-C cable and the charge block it comes with as seen here kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4KToZVpfqd5j5o The 66 has to be plugged in on the blue side so it gets the power it needs to run properly.

DriveSmart 66 owner here. I would like to see how you have it mounted... hopefully in the next video.
@sat1035 күн бұрын
Seeing it wouldn't show how I made it work but it's easy to explain. I use the standard Garmin suction mount at lower left of the windshield glass, but turned the mount and the circle clip slightly to get a little extra angle room. I was able to get the screen lower to the dashboard and tilt it so it's not glaring or reflecting.

Excellent navigation...I got the version with the camera...all the warnings (lane crossing, approaching a vehicle...etc.) work flawlessly...worth every cent, I can't imagine driving without this little thing anymore...I was skeptical about mounting it on the glass (that it wouldn't hold well), but so far everything is fine...
@sat1036 күн бұрын
DriveSmart 76 is 8.45oz (239.6g) and DriveCam 76 (the one with dashcam) is 9.56oz (271g). DriveCam isn't all that much heavier and should hold on the glass without issue. Even with the camera it's still better than the DriveSmart 70 which is 10.8oz (308g), or the older nuvi 2797LMT which is 12.4oz (352g), and neither of those 7" models have a camera at all.

Beware. It does not work well with Macs. Does not mount on the desktop. Does not work with POI Loader. Problems with Garmin Express. Works just fine with Windows.

On this particular model I go to Diagnostics Page (Volume page, hold top right corner, Configuration and Settings, MTP Settings, set MTP Mode to USB Ethernet) to resolve wonky issues when connecting to a computer so it mounts correctly. I don't know if that will fix issues when connecting to a MacOS box but it's worth a go. I also use the supplied Garmin USB cable just to be on the safe side.

It would be great if not so sluggish on map view refreshing and route recalculating. Is there any way to transfer that software to newer hardware ?
@sat10311 күн бұрын
No, but there are two things that can be done to speed it up. Set map detail to "Less" so it has less to draw, and use OpenStreetMap. Route calculation/recalculation speeds up significantly when using OSM. Example here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2WlhKp4pL14bdk

Recently had trouble updating a used Garmin DriveSmart using the usual Garmin tools. WiFi update wouldn’t work. Connected to pc and neither webupdater or Garmin Express would work. Garmin Express could not find the GPS even though it was connected vis Garmin USB cable. Eventually got it to work and here’s things to look for and try: - Went into Windows file manager and it turned out the Garmin had ZERO free space - Installed a 32gb micro sd card….didn’t help at that point - In order to free space I deleted language files….didn’t clear up a lot and still didn’t work - Powered up the gps in normal mode and went into WHERE TO and RECENT and there were a ton of recent places. Deleted those…..believe by hitting the hamburger icon and Delete. That freed up a lot of space….over 5gbs. - Noticed the time on GPS was incorrect which means when I received it I didn’t turn it on to acquire satellites. Did that. Once I did those things, it was recognized by Garmin Express and also update-able via WiFi and updates went smoothly.

My newer Pixel phone's GPS crapped out on me about a month ago and I bought a Drive 52. Ended up on your page and have watched a jillion of your videos. Now I also have a Drivesmart 66 in my car and loving both of them! Thanks for all the great info on this so called "outdated" technology that is way more useful to me than anything on my phone. If it only had the great rerouting that Google maps has though ...
@sat10314 күн бұрын
Two options in the DriveSmart 66 (and other models) to experiment with that can change what routing/rerouting you are given is U-Turn and Carpool Lanes avoidances from Settings > Navigation > Avoidances. U-Turn on or off sometimes changes routes for in-town driving, and Carpool Lanes on or off sometimes changes routes for highway driving. Whether you consider the route changes (if any) good or not is up to you. For me personally, having them both set to avoid gives me routes I generally agree with.

Thanks so much for this video, super helpful. I picked up a secondhand older unit and was having very intermittent traffic data come through and this largely has resolved this. Also just in learning that there was this back-end separate hidden menu (dare say it's in the manual somewhere!). Was great as well as way to reset the unit more broadly and get rid of past user data, that was eating at me. I wanted to ask too, and I say before it largely resolved the issue, as I'm wondering if you've experienced issue where FM traffic data seems to register first before Bluetooth Smartphone Link traffic data (I think this is what's happening), and then if FM data is very minimal / no nearby traffic level measures displayed etc, then the traffic seems to be receiving but it's not really giving you much. Then later, say when you switch the vehicle on and off after a stop, this data appears again and I think is because it's synced at this point with Bluetooth stream not FM. This is another experience of sort of changing / intermittent experience with traffic that I'm trying to diagnose. I wondered maybe it's possible to delete individual traffic map subscriptions in back-end and not reset all, not sure, I've not tested myself. But wondered if you've experienced this before as well and found a solve

I don't connect my phone to the Garmin so I can't really comment on that point. What I can comment on is that the Garmin does practice "fallback". For example, with any LMTHD model (DriveSmart 50LMTHD, 2599LMTHD, etc.), the unit while scanning for an FM traffic signal will attempt to receive HD traffic first, and if not found fall back to RDS second. I would assume the unit would do the same if a smartphone were paired to it using the Garmin Drive app. When the phone is connected, the Garmin will attempt to use the phone first to receive traffic data, and if unsuccessful fall back to FM. Where things could get dodgy is if you are "on the fringe" for FM traffic reception. If you are physically located on the outer edge of an FM traffic reception area, that could explain the on-again/off-again intermittent problem. You can check the FM coverage map here coverage.here.com/rds-coverage.html to see if you are in a fringe area or not. You can also use regular FM radio to judge strength of FM traffic reception. If you use your car's radio to scan for FM stations to listen to and barely any stations come in or none at all, the Garmin won't be able to receive any FM traffic data either since it uses the same FM frequencies.

The 42/44/52/54 is nothing more than 40/50 with some graphics changes and different font. No operational difference otherwise. The main reason to get one is because the mounting clip is much easier to get a replacement for if need be since they were used on so many other models. It is also possible to directly swap the 40/50 UI into a 42/44/52/54 kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHzMmJuNorB0pac

I’ve done several full map updates via WiFi without a hitch. Interestingly, they will often tell you to install a micro sd card which I’ve done. After WiFi map update is complete I’d often wire connect to Garmin Express and check how much free space is on the micro sd card and ALL of it is available.

I just tried this on my old Nuvi 57 and it worked beautifully! My garmin has been worth every penny and then some, but the only real problem I've had with it is the inability to create a custom route. I always thought it would create a route and I'd have to keep a mental note of where I wanted to change it, but this changes everything! Route shaping is basically connect the dots. This thing is way more capable than I ever thought it was.

USA technically does have it with ZIP+4, but it was never was completely implemented nationally. You can find ZIP+4 for just about any US address easily here tools.usps.com/zip-code-lookup.htm but Garmin will show no results and Google Maps will show the wrong location. Example: Dunkin' in McKinney TX is 75070-4206. Google Maps gets the city right but not the exact location.
