What a tragedy--a tragedy that should be an utter embarrassment and blemish on the whole INDUSTRY of Broadway--that this performance, (and so many other classic performances) was never filmed for eventual release. It would have been a hundred times better than the movie version. Nor was Langsbury's performance in Mame ever videoed, and she did it last in 1983 when very good technology existed. At least we have a so-so video recording of Angela in Sweeney Todd. This post makes clear they had the technology to capture the entire performance of Gypsy with Langsbury at the time. Why isn't it available now, decades later? For shame that the writers, greedy financiers, and probably a bevy of overpaid lawyers, blocked the video recording of this and so many other original classic Broadway performances. I had the vinyl record of Angela Langsbury in Gypsy back in the 70s as a child--it was the only recording available for years until they reissued the original Ethel Merman one, which I then realized was all about Ethel: interesting but not pleasant. The third recording was also a great one, with Tyne Daly in around 1990. And now we have many more. But I love the recording of Angela's Gypsy and still do. But the decent recording DOESN'T BEGIN TO DO JUSTICE to watching her sing and act it. Here she was at her absolute peak powers, one of the greatest actresses ever, and yet only a very small number of people--and declining yearly--ever got to see and experience her do this live. It would be so nice for the rest of us to have been able to see it in a video form. How lucky to have this snippet found and posted so a few of us nerds can know and see just how good she (and the others in the cast) were, in one of the greatest musicals ever created. Every year, despite an occasional Wicked or Phantom extravaganza, Broadway become less and less relevant to mainstream America. Yeah deal with that NYC and mainstream media based there. It is too expensive for 99% of Americans--especially combined with the costs of staying in NYC. The movie Wicked, while great, will not save the industry, not long term. If you Broadway producers want to know why, despite the occasional mega-blockbuster, so many great shows are unknown to the majority of American and the world living today, look in the mirror--then look at your greedy hands and lawyers. You have allowed much of a great American art form to become lost for failing to record these performances when you had the chance and the technology to do so. Despite the occasional video release of an original Broadway show (thank God there are a few) such as Into the Woods, or a few great revivals (South Pacific or Oklahoma)--very few stage musical productions still ever make it to video, where most of the world could see, learn, or appreciate what all the commotion was about with legends like Angela Langsbury. So while I marvel at the talent Langsbury had in Gypsy which i never fully appreciated, despite having heard it for years, it makes me very angry that the powers that be in the industry never allowed its recording and preservation for the ages. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

You know, the only problem with the original production is Gene Kelly. No, hear me out! The original Joey, from O'Hara's stories in The New Yorker, simply doesn't come across as being impossibly handsome and talented. He's a bit like Archie in John Osborne's The Entertainer--somebody who is not bad at what he does, but not quite good enough. An Also-Ran. But he's young, he's got a certain brass that can impress a girl, get the audiences going, and he's skating by on shallow charm. I don't know how Kelly played it, though you can watch his later films and see bits and pieces of what he must have done on stage--like in Singin' In The Rain, before Don Lockwood wises up, stops taking the movie star crap so seriously, works harder at using his real talent as a song & dance man. A lot of the time, his characters have a bit of the grifter to them. In a certain limited sense, he was often playing a nicer version of the character who made him a star. I'd give anything to go back and see this, most of all for Vivienne Segal, who I consider the true star of the show--as she was of the 50's revival. I hate what they did to Vera in the movie with Sinatra, turning her into a jealous aging bitch--in the play she not only doesn't shut down the club because Joey likes a younger girl--she makes nice with Linda, and feeling bad about breaking things off with Joey, she makes a peace offering--he can keep the club. He only loses it because his pride is hurt, and he insults her. I will never go see any version of this show that diverges from the original O'Hara script. Joey isn't a truly bad guy (Vera is too smart to have anything to do with that kind), but he's a heel, not a hero--if you reform him, he's not Joey anymore. Maybe someday he'll catch wise, but not during this play.

How special ...the interview, the recordings. I feel privileged to get this insight and perspective on doing written with specific meaning for it's musical play, which gives new and profound understanding of the song otherwise offered outside the context of the musical. Thank you Mr. Rudd, Mr. Sondheim and the person who posted this video. Priceless!

So why did they wait two decades to make a movie of "Chicago" without dancers of Chita and Liza's caliber? The movie wasn't bad, but they sure used a lot of quick cuts and editing to cover the lead actors' dancing.

I grew up with the Cariou/Lansbury recording and then Hearn/Lansbury. I’m used to seeing different actors perform this, but to see different actors in virtually the same production from 1980 is wild. I feel like I’ve entered an alternate universe. Ha ha. Thanks uploading this. I must ask…does a full version of this exist out there?

I would've LOVED to have seen Len Cariou perform. His and George Hearn's takes of "Epiphany" definitely offered some inspiration for my own approach: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zni4e36mjsueeLs

Its crazy that Angela Lansbury played Dame Elizabeth Taylor older sister and she outlived Elizabeth Taylor by 13 years. Liz was born in 1932 And Angela Lansbury was born in 1925. Angela Lansbury was such an extraordinary women. And an extraordinary actress, she was classy, brilliant, intellectually smart, she had a beautiful soul and heart, just a lovely lady. She was a true National Treasure and a iconic Legend, and became a pop culture Phenomena, who's career spanned 8 decades. She is a real STAR AND a goat 🐐 RIP sweet Angela Lansbury...you were my Nana's favorite actress and Murder She Wrote was her favorite show, she never missed a episode and continued watching re-runs just before she declined with Demetia and she would sadly pass away in 2023 the same year Angela Lansbury death..my Nana/Grandma was 95 when she died but unfortunately not from dementia a car crash took her. But knowing my grandma died the same year her favorite actress died was eeire but at the same time happy that they are both in a better place in place much more beautiful then anything our human eyes or minds can comprehend. My Nana gets to watch her in television heaven. Angela Lansbury (1925-2022)📻🎬📺📽️⭐❤️

You did a great job.. Obviously a labor of love. I can't understand why it didn't occur to anyone to preserve these shows somehow. . Were it not for that tourist who snuck his camera in, we wouldn't have any footage, albeit silent, of so many of these Broadway shows dating back to the 30s. Lost to the ages: Merman's Gypsy, Mary's South Pacific and yes even Lucy's Wildcat. The tourist footage is frustrating because it leaves you wanting more. Merman and Bob Hope doing "It's Delovely" for instance. We have some TV versions (Wonderful Town), bootleg audio recordings (Coco) , selected segments on the Tonys (mid-60s on) and the Ed Sullivan Show. And of course, the OBC albums brought to life more in the late 50s with the introduction of high fidelity. Has there been any sound improvement since then? I say no. Remixing to perfection takes away a lot of the theatrical spontaneity IMO. I love the fact we hear Channing come in early with "ER....." before catching herself ("Ermangarde, stop sniveling,,,,") In "Put On Sunday Clothes". . I was born way too late to witness the show business era I love.
