Hello, The one thing that i am struggling with is speaking the language that i am learning. So i came in to the idea that if reading aloud will eventually improve my speaking skills. I was wondering if you agree with that or if you have any idea if it does work or not? I have no one to practice with and it costs too much money to hire a tutor. Do you have any idea of how to do it, how to find subjects to tackle and the process that comes with it to help us improve our speaking skills without engaging with people, since i am an introvert person avoiding people. Thank you

Nice video. Thankyou. I practice Spanish by speaking to my corn snake called Rosberg. Although he has a Finnish name, he was actually born in London, so English is his native language. Most of our conversations are a bit one sided. But, speaking out loud to him in Spanish has really helped my language learning. Last week, he hissed "Dame un raton congelado" to me .

Great content on your channel. I think you have a lot of potential and you'll continue to grow. But I have to be honest, the constant cuts every three to seven words are very distracting and make it almost unlistenable sometimes. Maybe it's just me, so take it for what it's worth. But again, good work.

Yes, these jump cuts make it look unprofessional. And for some reason, his voice sounds quite robotic and forced - he's got to work on his delivery to make it sound more natural

Thanks for your support and the tips! I will keep that in mind. Just trying to figure out the right balance between the cost/benefit of doing the videos in terms of my time and effort on them and the current return on making the videos, which to be honest, is actually $0. So, spending too much time on delivery/editing or getting a professional editor doesn't make sense, and I was just trying to get the video out there as best as possible. All the best with your language learning.

I use Duolingo, Anki, books and lots of audio input to learn Vietnamese. Duolingo gives you a solid basis to get a feeling of the sound, which you can then expand with books and anki, to recognise words in the audio input. Basically use the thing we can do since we were babies AND use the active learning only bigger children and adults can do.

I'm becoming fluent in Chinese but it's English my native language that I want to talk about. I like to write down my thoughts but when I listen to my thoughts to Express them I often hear words to repeat like the following sentences: 1. I Had Had it over a year ago for the same price. I dish that I had bought. 2. I think That That will change in the near future. A situation that I have. I repeat the words "Had and That" twice in my head so that's what I have started to write. I think that I need to feel and Express all of the energy that I feel so that's what I write now. I think that I even had this happen with my Chinese once. Pay attention to your thinking and feel it.

Sorry you experienced that. (My comment arrives late, so you might not see it). This is pure racism. I hope someone will sue them. I would understand they have a different pay level according to the teaching experience, or even university degree, but this is not the case here. It's just a way to exploit some of their employees. Disgusting. I'm white so I can't say I went through this myself... but it shocks me that such things still happen in the 2000s. It's a mentality of 1950! Keep strong and continue with your goals. There must be other companies out there who are living in this century! Hopefully you'll find another job to bring home some money while you build your channel.

I have a similar problem, but I put on weight and find it really difficult to get started with sport. To do sports is way more difficult than to learn languages.
@MatthewAlberto2 ай бұрын
I can relate to you Mariana. Actually, I often become overweight because I was chubby as a kid. Just this time around, I was losing weight in a bad way as I wasn't eating properly. Getting that momentum to start exercising and focusing on health can be challenging. For me, I like to start with very simple actions and habits that I can take every day. The focus would just be to build the habit, and it might just be going for a short walk every day, or just showing up at the gym every day, and not pushing myself to have a "perfect" workout. Main aim would be to build the habit. I find that works well for me to get started after a big break from not working out. I made a video about building small habits, and some of the tips there might help you, too, with your exercise and language learning: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2XWnnufd7GifZo

Sentence mining has always meant ONE new word. Cool to see someone trying to boost it, but… Matt from Matt vs Japan and the rest of the Refold team could’ve saved you a bunch of effort since they’ve been saying to take it one word at a time. 😅 Always happy to see others experimenting. Please keep it up and come back to us when you’ve discovered the next best way to master another language!
@MatthewAlberto2 ай бұрын
Hi Jeffrey, Yes, I was actually aware myself of those tips you mentioned before I did this experiment. I guess I wanted to test and validate whether the ONE-word-per-sentence idea was still sound even with this new wave of AI tech. I thought maybe that assumptions were made beforehand since AI didn't exist before and we weren't capable of making these multi-target word sentences easily. Glad that you liked the video, and yes, I'll still keep sharing different experiments and ideas I come up with as I keep going learning languages. All the best with your language journey!

OK you thought you found a great method... turned out it did not work. You learned from your experience and you are humble enough to share it with other learners. It is indeed easier to remember words you saw/heard in context. If now you want to focus on CI comprehensible input, there are a lot of resources in Spanish (Many for free). On youtube I suggest: Dreaming Spanish (completely CI); Hola Spanish and Easy Spanish. I watch videos and select some words I want to learn. I put them in my Gold list (a method create by David James... you can find a few videos in English explaining the method). I also like using Lingopie. ($) You can watch series, movies and short documentaries in Spanish (and a few other languages). You click on the words when you need a translation... and the system can create flashcards for you. And you can play little memory games with your personal list. It's really fun and useful. Once you feel you have acquire enough words, it might be a good idea to transcribe not just lone words but chunks from the videos you watch. Good luck with your learning. 🙂

I re-watched the Japanese sumo wrestling Netflix show, 'Sanctuary' with Japanese subtitles, and found it very easy to watch - but that was because I had seen it already, and there's a lot of physical acting. Apart from that, I'm still watching anime with English subtitles, but I've trained myself to listen to the dialogue while reading the subs. I also rip the audio from some episodes (which I've already seen) and put them on my mp3 player, and listen to them if I'm travelling.
@MatthewAlberto3 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your tips, Gary. I agree that watching a movie first in your native language can help, then watching it later again but with same language subtitles. Do you also remove all of the non-speaking parts and background music of the movie when you get the audio, or do you listen to the whole thing with audio?

I get severe headache trying to learn a new language. I have been learning Spanish for about a year now, and if I spend a lot of time focused on it the headaches come. I get a phrase, and say it over and over... try to use it at work regularly. But 'studying' it.... nope.
@MatthewAlberto3 ай бұрын
Hi Annie. That seems to be frustrating. Have you tried breaking up your "study" sessions into shorter periods and doing them throughout the day? That might help. Or another idea would be to use a SRS spaced repetition flashcards so that the phrases and words you learn only show up as you need to remember them and reviews spread out over time, rather than rote memorizing

@@MatthewAlberto I could if I didn't work. I have a stack of flash cards of words and their meanings, but they are pretty much useless without context. I think once I am not working 6 days a week I can do it on the days I am off. Thanks.

I probably have the opposite issue - I spend most of my time learning listening passively but forgetting to go back to read the transcript or pausing to look up words I don’t know and turn them into flash cards! 😅 I use Anki but haven’t made time to add audio or images, yet! 😅 And I love Google translate ❤️👍

I also listen passively a lot, and once in a while look up words, and if they're difficult I make cards. Yes, Google Translate is also helpful, but recently it failed me and led to real-life negative consequences. I talk about it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGK4h5uNjq92eq8

Go for it, Mandy! Our team and I actually made a free online flashcard maker tool that can help you find pictures faster with google images, and even GIFs: speakada.com/online-flashcard-maker/ You just type in a word, and relevant images and gifs show up, as well as audio, translation and definition. You'll still have to choose and copy the data onto your flashcard, but it helps open up all the websites with those data in one go. That might help you jazz up your basic flashcard with pictures.
