I might as well make a separate post about that fake Double Dragon IV because someone said something... if you lived back then, you KNEW what the NES was... so you KNEW the NES was not a wide screen aspect ratio with imitation chip tunes... you also KNEW how different games had different chip tunes on the NES... so i am sure you can tell what a pale imitation is so even if the original game dev made it... they can make mistakes and be critiqued for it, the media can be critiqued for having some bias.. in fact Nintendo Power was being called biased in the early 90s probably coming from Gamepro and EGM to get readers to switch. That is the main problem with those "retro graphics" games... some of them even add a "now loading" screen even though the game is running of a PS4 where data loads from the HDD... that just means bloated programming and all they want is to cash in on older gamers and retro ones. Finally... we did have EGM and Nintendo Power so we knew Super Double Dragon was part IV... later Tradewest/Acclaim or whatever made Double Dragon V... pretty obvious so making a fake NES Double Dragon and calling it IV is like slapping in the face of Halo fans doing the same thing and calling it IV even when you know which game was part IV.

Hold up!... again about Super Double Dragon IV (SUPER because Super FamiCom and Super Nintendo here) I purchased this game and read previews the idea was Super Nintendo had arcade graphics finally and all the games were trying to prove it just like Sega had arcade graphics and even NEC despite the PCE aka TG16 being made in 1987. The problem was NEVER the rise of Street Fighter 2, which released in summer of 1992. The problem was behind the scenes.. there was some pressure by the subsidiary company or the license holder and the game was RUSHED and unfortunately this was happening a lot back then on Nintendo and Sega where they wanted games out by a holiday season time so we have to look at the behind the scenes. I recall reading that there was a complicated licensing with Double Dragon back then before the internet on the magazines... that to get the license you had to basically ask Tradewest and Taito or just Tradewest because Tradewest got lucky and got in there for the first Double Dragon arcade game that once it became a smash, they never let go and they probably knew because Renegade did generate similar interest on the arcades and the NES release... so I feel Tradewest was the problem and because as usual back then the U.S. subsidiary branches just looked at the holiday season sales and not the quality of the games. Taito was involved because they made either the arcade chipset or arcade cabinets and they still had a U.S. arcade subsidiary branch to distribute arcade cabinets to coin operators.. I could be wrong. Anyways the Super Nintendo launch set sold out records... many people, most teens just either forgot or did not realize that there were weeks where the Super Nintendo was basically sold out. I was gonna buy the Super NIntendo because SF2 was officially announced in Japan in 1991 as coming exclusively to the Super FamiCom in 1992 and that a North American version would happen sooner than ever so the Sega Genesis was purchased later. Anyway playing the game did feel weird because it felt like something was supposed to happen at the end of stages just like the NES games or the arcade and the Super Nintendo hardware was new so they made sure to feature two player mode... I did research and found out the guy in charge did want to add cutscenes and extra levels and bosses but ran into a schedule limitation... a polite way of saying they told me to finish the game by this time so they would make big money... looking at Wiki it states the game was released in September and October... had they released in it complete and polished in December, it would have been the word of mouth with Nintendo fans that would have set sales records. Anyway Tradewest was the problem and they decided to make utter rubbish... or low quality games... no matter how cool a one on one arcade fighter was, it was not necessary to force Double Dragon into that genre...and the SNK NeoGeo Double Dragon shows that... people did try playing that game in arcades but it was clear the fighting system was rough and that game slipped compared to the competition... they could have just made a beat em up using the SNK NeoGeo's power and I feel people would have been way more satisfied even if two player coop... no matter what they say the decision for game devs to make a fighting game or use pre-rendered CGi graphics had more to do with the error of seeing one game or two (Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct) set the sales charts on fire and assuming that people wanted those graphics or that those graphics would make the game better and some of the blame does go to gamer magazines from mid 90s onwards cause many of them started bias whining or complaining about a 2d game being full retail priced... like sheesh the arcade conversions of PlayStation and Sega Saturn were never possible on Genesis and Super Nintendo cause that arcade hardware was too powerful and expensive. So the GBA game well I was never a fan of portables but the GBA seemed like a portable Super Nintendo in a way so I figured they made the right call with that version... after that it's hit or miss... I actually purchased a Double Dragon for PS4 and just hated playing it that i returned it with it's fake "retro graphics" that were so annoying that the dev team should have to face a firing squad just for doing fake 2d graphics that could never run on MegaDrive, Super Nintendo or even Nintendo 64 and worse that game had LOADING times so the reviews were biased on that 2022 game too. And Super Play reviewer sound dumb.. a stuffy arrogant journalist dude calling Super Double Dragon 8bit... lmao

As one-on-one fighting games like Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat took over the arcades and home consoles, both the media and consumers lost interest in traditional brawlers, like Final Fight, Streets of Rage and, yes, Double Dragon. Look at pretty much any beat 'em up review posted after 1993 or 1994. Even with companies like Capcom trying to evolve the genre, you could tell that there was real fatigue, especially in light of what was happening in the one-on-one fighting game space. While I certainly appreciate you engaging with this video (and helping with the algorithm), it sounds like you need to be okay with others disagreeing with your opinion of Super Double Dragon IV. It's rare for everybody to agree on a game, especially something like DDIV, and no matter how many novels you write on the subject will change that. If you love the game, that's awesome. I'm definitely not here to tell you that you're wrong. I'm just showing you what the critics said and what the narrative was surrounding DDIV at the time.

Let me remind this channel.. back then here was the pecking order... if you had local shop that hard a couple of arcade cabinets and the shop owner liked changing the machines (to get popular games that would make more coin) then just by going to these shops, assuming you were old enough then you would have witnessed Double Dragon 1 in all it's arcade glory with your friends and you would have freaked out... then you would have freaked out when they announced that Double Dragon was coming to the NES but few of us knew that the NES was really hardware that was made back in 1983 and there was no known big hype alternative and we did not know that Tecnos Japan had a special alliance with Nintendo because in Japan the FamiCom sold over ten million systems by the year 1986... that is right... in three years the Japanese FamiCom made it possible for small third party company to possibly sell one million plus cartridges which paid big money for them and made it possible for them to make BETTER GAMES.. that is the fact and the fact is that no matter how advanced the Sega Master System was, it never sold as many systems and neither did the Sega MegaDrive in that same three year timeline. Therefore we were actually impressed with the NES version in 1988 even though we knew there was no two player mode... already Renegade was a very impressive game too and Double Dragon just added another... therefore again Sega later got the license for Double Dragon and made a version for the Sega Master System... the problem was that in the U.S.A., Sega's marketing efforts were very weak... sure you might have seen a tv commercial or had a friend with a Sega Master System who was eagerly awaiting for anything from Sega but Sega of America simply had WEAK marketing and did not push for making a big magazine during the 80s therefore if you had to rely on those other game magazines you were lucky if you knew about them at all... by 1988 NIntendo of America started Nintendo Power Magazine and that gave two whole years of dedicated Nintendo hype to teens, kids and yes older than teens who were still interested in videogames as a hobby instead of alcohol or drugs or worse, being an uptight you know what. Meanwhile Sega was not gonna bother making their own magazine until 1990 and by the time they did they really mishandled it.. that is why when you look at the U.K. and Europe you see so many Sega dedicated magazines that make us loo slow in comparison... so basically Sega had two player mode but few knew and as such FEW CARED to buy. Then Double Dragon II comes out in arcades, we go crazy about it, it's way more awesome but the Nintendo NES gets DDII and has two player mode... so again... people were fine with it because the games were being made by Tecnos Japan with high quality which is why you can still play those old games to this day and have fun. Meanwhile in Japan the console wars are on a different level... for Sega to be stuck in third place there it means that Westerners are ignorant of how serious the console wars were there because there were more competitors and only nintendo, NEC and Sega were the top three... that said in 1988 Sega of America as a subsidiary branch was an utter mess.. management quit or were or had to be fired or did not care about videogames or Sega or whatever... basically Sega Enterprises LTD Japan wants to share their Sega MegaDrive with the U.S.A and Canada and Mexico and they cannot because their subsidiary branch was a joke here... that is a FACT... That means Sega Enterprises LTD JAPAN paid big money to hire people... at first they tried giving the MegaDrive to Atari Corp.. thank God that never happened but they still had hired staff from Atari Corp apparently and their mentality had problems or caused problems so they did not like the name "MegaDrive" and wanted to waste months to change it... calling it Genesis instead and the initial launch was good and was ok but those months wasted mean something... if Sega of America had better managers we would have had a Sega MegaDrive launch in 1988 and we basically would have known that Altered Beast was on the MegaDrive simply from going to the store and seeing the massive sprite graphics and the high price at launch which would have been $200 USD with no game packed in... Whatever the case in 1989 Sega Genesis had Golden Axe, Ghosts n Ghouls and Altered Beast.. all showing huge sprite graphics on screen but by that time you have probably over ten million NES sold in the U.S. alone probably 5 million in Canada and probably 3 million in Mexico so they all were experiencing every smash hit NES game and no matter how impressive the Genesis looked, it was one year late which when we get to the U.K. and Europe we see the bigger problem of PAL/SECAM causing delays where they already had to wait TWO YEARS for the Sega MegaDrive while no one there was taking the Nintendo NES seriously but they had the Sega Master System since 1988 or so... Then you come to 1991... Nintenod of America made a massive error in judgement of delaying the Super Nintendo to redesign the shell and instead of launching a week after Japan they launched a year late which gave the Genesis and even in U.K./Europe the Sega MegaDrive just way more time to sell more systems but the problem was that for some reason Super Double Dragon IV was being rushed probably because in the U.S. the marketing people saw big dollar signs and had no patience... Super Double Dragon was an amazing game and we wanted more... even though Final Fight was great too the fact was Super Double Dragon was way more fun and had more potential but they just did not finish the game properly and some company held the Western right to Double Dragon... probably the same that put pressure to rush part four and there we are.

I was there for this history, as well. However, it's important to note, that this is a show about what the magazines were saying at the time. When we look back at these games, it's through the lens of how the media was covering it at the time. This does not always line up with how the consumer saw it (especially if the consumer was a child at the time), but it helps to give us a snapshot of what the critics were saying at the time. It's worth noting that we've extensively explored the history of the Genesis and Super NES in dozens (if not hundreds) of videos, both about classic magazines and not.

@@DefunctGames but dude just because YOU was a "child" does not mean that everyone who played or owned a NES or SMS were your same age... there may have been people you did not know who were older and survived Atari and got the excitement with the NES or Sega... those were somewhat obscure times because it took until Nintendo of America made Nintendo Power Magazine for the whole fanatical fans to develop... so once 1988 starts you no longer have the slim nintendo newsletter, you can easily find Nintendo Power Magazine everywhere like propaganda leaflets and right there from 1988 onwards you are not only getting more information than before but you were getting posters and other stuff... people did get posters from buying a game... some guy told me he got this massive Renegade poster from buying that game and returning a slip to the subsidiary branch... iirc it was Taito or something so they sent him and others these things but the whole "child" thing is sensitive... you risk ignoring older than your age... so let's say you were 8 years old in 1988... in school it was hard to know and in the neighborhood it may also have been difficult to know but probably if you had cousins or neighbors you knew or you went to say the Boys Club or joined the Boys Scouts or some youth sports program maybe... so at some point there were other buys and ironically (even to me) actual girls who had a NES and Super Mario and a few other games before the shaming/peer pressure during late elementary or high school where some guy would act like you were you a child for having Nintendo but the football quarterback and running backs had Nintendo and Sega and had beaten SMB or Ghosts n Ghouls, etc or any high school sports back then where you got the impression that they were too muscular and sporty to admit playing Legend of Zelda... then again I am sure some older teens did act like games were dumb also that goes into the whole sales thing.. on fb some have told me they did paper routes and saved the three hundred dollars to buy the NEC Turbo GraFX 16 with games in 1989... or they did chores like shoveling snow... and basically ignored going to McDonalds so it was not all "parents buying kids games" imagery. I would not rely too much on the media perspective... EGM had a slow start only made because Ed Semrad saw the viability of the Nintendo Power Magazine securing subscriptions... and iirc Ed Semrad was a master gamer cause despite being a journalist, he had fond memories of the late 70s and early 1980s arcade and home machines and iirc he would be impressed with the graphics and gameplay BUT then again you had some of those magazines that had people that were more like stuffy journalists who probably felt frustrated to be working at a videogame magazine... in U.K. Europe I can sense that some of the reviewers did not know about the arcade version... that's just my feelings on that but also they might have additional frustration from the whole NTSC to PAL/SECAM conversion that if it was not optimized, their experience with the game would be worse and that continued and harmed the first year of the Sega Saturn but iirc never harmed the PlayStation because Sony planned ahead and made sure that even 1994 games like Ridge Racer would run optimal in PAL regions. BTW in High school during senior year I recall knowing a freshman who once he saw that I was talking to someone about Nintendo, he started telling me and selling the (like a salesman) amazingness of the Megaman games that I was ignoring because initially I just did not try them and did not know anything about them... he told me even the music was amazing in those games and I forget if I recommended any games but I eventually had all the Megaman games especially after finding a retro shop... oh yeah again in high school an older kid would brag about playing SMB on a projection screen saying the graphics were huge... and I recall being told that some game systems damaged the TV screens which was why I had an old used TV just in case the screen got damaged but it never did... maybe some projection screens got damaged and maybe his family had a newer tech projection TV.

One of the greatest games and one of the most chilling final boss themes with the fittingly named “Grandmaster”, I’ve always been fascinated by the story of Strider, with its dystopian future of 2048 and the appearance of Meio the Grandmaster, i appreciate the in depth look at the story behind this legendary capcom arcade game. It’s just a shame that Tiertex’s “sequel” is part is a stain on the franchise that thankfully is just a footnote in history since the REAL Strider 2 was released by Capcom 6 years after that Tiertex abomination.

I'm so happy that Strider Returns has always been treated like it was bad fan fiction that should be ignored. Even back in the day, very few magazines reviewed it (and any previews were largely negative). Since then, the game has not appeared on any classic game compilations and Capcom (understandably) never talks about it. You really have to do some digging to even find out that it exists at this point.

QotD - Mega Man 2, and at a very close second Super Mario World. Depending on how I'm feeling that day Mega Man 2 might be my favorite video game OF ALL TIME. ... Looking thru the comments here I've gotta say regarding sports titles I don't have a problem with them ranking them high. For example, I loved the Madden series on Super NES and I frequently played Tecmo Super Bowl and Madden 93 for several years before I moved on to other football games on other systems such as PC and Playstation. One of my favorite genres are sports and racing titles. Like I'll take an early Madden title from the 90s or 2000s any day of the week over any JRPG; even today. Different strokes for different folks I think. For some, sports games are just as fun if not more fun than other genres just like anything else.

The list is awesome, the quality of editing and narration is awesome, but what makes these videos so great are the humor and presentation it's all wrapped-in. Usually I'd say this sort of stuff gets in the way of what people want, but it instead balances out the simple nature of game criticism back then with some meta-commentary about game criticism in general. Back then, game critics didn't know any better and the audience knew even less, some literally only few years removed from shitting themselves on the daily. So yeah, things weren't so developed back then but the blunt, unapologetic tone of reviews back then is so refreshing. They'd just say the wildest shit and be cool with it because a bunch of dorks without credit cards were the only that read.

That's a common issue with these kinds of lists and retrospectives. The critics are overly impressed with the big advancements in sports games from one generation to the next, as the added tech allows them to make the sims more realistic. However, a few years (or decades) later, and those sports games have been completely overshadowed by newer, better, more realistic versions.

@@DefunctGames As a person who loves sportsball real and in game form (yea not real gamer i know) see why they would be impressed. You have too look at the games as they were then, and back then they looked, sounded and felt amazing to play. Of course new more more advanced games will overshadow them, but that's true for all games. @DefunctGames

@tical2399 I think that sports games age differently than most of the other games we talk about, especially the ones on this list. A typical platformer or action game (like Super Mario World or Mega Man 3) isn't overshadowed by advanced technology, as most of those games and franchises evolved into something different over the years. The run 'n gun action action game of the early 1990s is now a first- or third-person shooter, which might not scratch the same itch. As such, it's easy to go back and enjoy Contra or Gunstar Heroes, because technology didn't make them obsolete. The genre slowly shifted into something different over the decades. You might be right that some classics are overrated and don't hold up to games released today. I am not one of those people who says that modern gaming is bad and everything good came out 20+ years ago. However, we need to acknowledge that a lot of these games remain fun because of how the genre evolved over the decades. Super Mario World wasn't made worse by the release of Super Mario 64, as Super Mario 64 turned the platforming genre into something new and different.
@tical2399
@tical2399 4 күн бұрын
@@DefunctGamesI see by your comment that we disagree on the issue. What I'm saying is that games like SMW, Contra 3 etc HAVE been overshadowed by newer tech and don't hold up today. I'm 45 now so i was right there in the nes mania and the 16 bit era going forward so i got first hand love for lots of those games. That said I tend to be unemotional and not a nostalgic person so looking back at some of the "all time greats" like SWM and many others they don't hold up. I boot plenty of games up on emulator and play for a few mins and I'm like" yea this aint it". I can't continue to play SMW when it's been put out to pasture by games like Celeste, Holow Knight or hell even mario wonder. Almost any game a person can name I can find a better modern game that advancements in tech have rendered obsolete.

@@tical2399 I'm 49. Don't worry, I know age is a bad way to keep score. I just wanted to add my perspective because I used to share yours. But I don't understand that perspective anymore. Celeste and Super Mario World scratch two very different itches. The first is as kind as a meat grinder can be. The second is a playground that begs you to explore it. Celeste is about finding the right answer, Super Mario World is about finding the right questions. Yeah, I think Mario's sprite suffers from questionable color choices, and there's the usual slowdown issues. The game needs a lot of nostalgia to ignore all that. I wasn't a fan when it was new. But it has restraint. And imagination. And a team that can explore the many shades between the rigid "baby mode" and "Player 1 genocide" limitations that too many modern games fall into. It was one of the most rewarding games I played this year. I haven't played the other games you named, so yeah, I can't argue there. But even if they do improve, I doubt very much they replace. It just means there's more good games in the world.

Rock 'N Roll Racing likely came out after Game Zone folded. I suspect the Nintendo Game Zone off-shoot probably reviewed it.

Super Mario Kart was a slip-sliding mess of pixel soup that was overrated due to the original ideas and charm behind it. Seriously, I had more fun racing through fog on the 2600, back in the day. Back way before the N64 turned fog into a mark of shame...and redeemed Mario Kart.

THANK YOU So much for covering this game!! I actually found this game within the last week randomly on my steam recommended. But your review carries a lot of weight to me so thanks! Leave it to you to mention the dedicated scream/yell button 😂 I love stuff like that

$40 for this?! And how much is the Rugrats game?
@DefunctGames
@DefunctGames 4 күн бұрын
Looks like Rugrats was $25 back when I reviewed it. I liked Dog Man more, but you're definitely paying a lot more for it. I suspect that the Dog Man license costs more to secure right now, what with the books still being popular and the Hollywood movie coming out in January.

It's ironic that you covered this... given your name and the game's status. Rebellion/2000AD finally caught up to 10tons and made them take it down. Because like you said, this really IS the best Judge Dredd game we will ever get, and it was unlicensed.

That's terrible news. When I chose the name Defunct Games oh so long ago, I had no idea how appropriate it would be in some situations. At this point, I could probably make a full list of at least 10 or 20 games that I reviewed that have been de-listed due to some stupid reason. Jydge was a great game.

Twisted Metal was the originator no doubt but Vigilante 8 did it better. Better car physics and mechanics. Better Graphics and better gameplay.

If gamers judge the game on its length and how easy it might seem then yeah everyone shall be disappointed….I’ve only played Hitman in 2000 and tried Bloodmoney really briefly in 2009 before I went to the army but damn, only a month ago was I aware that Hitman 3 or WOA was out there, no reviews were necessary for me, I’ve just purchased it and Maaaan did I enjoy playing the campaign through, a HUGE step forward in comparison to what Hitman in 2000 was, a beautiful gem of replayability, actually doing the challenges, i mean 28 € on Microsoft Store is absolutely nothing, 21+ maps, so dense and versatile, that game doesn’t make you incarnate a killer but it rather incites you to become one, just the fact that the campaign already gives you several alternatives on how to infiltrate, disguise and improvise at best throughout those “barks” dialogues, it’s just damn fun to try out different approaches and strategies, God I love that game, only the interface could be smoother in terms of overview and the iOi server connection can be really moody at times…at least for me on Xbox One, I’m confident iOinteractive will improve even more with time, making Hitman what it already was back in 2000, a pure infiltration/assassination game, I definitely recommend it even though some targets or missions/contracts can only be unlocked with money

The Ghostbusters game for Wii captured the spirit of the films just right (Even if the gameplay was poor). South Park Fractured But Whole succeeded in similar fashion.

Does look like a fun platformer, that's for sure. May check that out. As for the question, was a Sailor Moon game on the PC Engine that I tried out on Emulators, not sure if it ever got a release outside of Japan though, which is a shame if it didn't, as it was a great kinda sequel to the first season of Sailor Moon that I really enjoyed. Reason I'm not sure if it got a release outside of Japan is because the one I played was a fan translate version, but was fun none the less, and really captured the characters, plus added an extra lore to the story of The Moon Kingdom and how the Negaverse came into play during it, including how the Generals of the Negaverse use to be Soldiers for The Prince of Earth that was brainwashed. Really good stuff.

Glad to see a kid's game that can be a "kid's first game", too simple for the experienced adult but simple yet fun enough to be a kid's first experience. Though I do wonder- 80-HD seems like his double-jump lets him clear a LOT of various platform-puzzles that the game might've intended for another character, but which he can handle because of his imbalanced strengths. Is this the case, or am I off-base? Also, regarding licenses: I will always rep TMNT, but it's not really a surprise that they have fun games. So BESIDES TMNT, I'd like to recommend the Blade-game for the Game Boy Color. Fairly unknown, and not exactly super-famous, but I think it's a fun game, a very simplistic beat-em-up which still manages to be fun.
@DefunctGames
@DefunctGames 5 күн бұрын
80-HD gets that double jump real late in the game, so it's more of a reward than anything. And once they introduce the double jump, they start to change up how the platforming is laid out. By that time it's less about the platforming and more about the puzzle solving, so the double jump doesn't ruin anything.
