I was impressed at the kefir grains you have in stock. I don't get them, what I turn out is just a tspful of cream after straining. It sets in get a thick milk on straining it tastes good but no kefir grains yet, can you guide me please. I use pasteurized milk. I live in india. Waiting to hear from you. Tku in anticipation

Great video explaining and showing all things about milk kefir grains! Do you consume the suspended milk? How best do you think kefir grains can be kept if on vacation for 1 month, freezing?
@twobearshomestead
@twobearshomestead 3 ай бұрын
Thank you!! The 'suspension milk" will be somewhat fermented. Depends on how long. I've consumed it. Used in cereal. As for going away: if you have a small amount of grains, just put in a higher volume of milk in fridge. Alternately, you could freeze with enough milk to cover.

Corned Beef Is NOT Irish!
@twobearshomestead
@twobearshomestead 4 ай бұрын
Technically, you're correct. The cattle Act of 1663 and 1668 severely limited the importation of cattle into England, therefore it flooded the Irish market. Salt preservation of meat was nothing new, even then. And corned beef originated in England. During this period, Irish beef was superior, plentiful, and cheap. Ships routinely went to Ireland to reprovision on the beef for journeys, and corned beef became associated with Ireland. Hence its introduction to the new world. But the Jews in the new world -especially NY- actually took the corned beef to next level with their deli meat sandwich. All cultures actually have a version of corned beef. The traditional Irish version is heavily flavored with pickling spices, mustard see, etc. The Jewish version leans towards heavy onion/garlic flavors. So, yes, corn beef is technically English in origin that has been adopted and accepted as an Irish American tradition.

@@twobearshomestead Yeah but not as pink as the grocery store stuff. I read that the fat cap can have something to do with that, if there is too much fat left after trimming. Maybe that is the issue? I bet it still turns red on the inside when you cook it. Could just be oxidation but that's just me grasping lol.

@twobearshomestead

You can flavor it pretty much however you want. You can make it plain, and add anything at the glass. Many throw in a blender with fruit, etc. I've taken to sprinkling cinnamon in , instead of the sticks. Experiment!!

This is my next project. I bought some dehydrated grains and been researching how to make it. It has so much calcium in it (kefir) and I need the calcium. It’s good to see it being made. Thanks for sharing 😊
@twobearshomestead
@twobearshomestead 5 ай бұрын
Aside from the calcium, you'll be interested in the vitamin k2. On of the many things modern medicine doesn't discuss are vitamin k2, and it's role in calcium absorption. K2, in short, helps the body redirect calcium from the blood into the bones where it belongs. Helps reduce arterial calcification. I suggest further research if you're interested. Or, just know kefir is delicious, and great for you!

We bought 25 acres in NC about a year and a half ago. Our son had come here in the Greensboro area to work years ago, so when we retired we decided to move here also. Our son and family will build on the land and we will also. Right now we fixed up the old house that was here to live in while we do this so we don't have to stay with them. In NC you have to have 10 acres for a farm. Know before you buy. We're from MD and they do not like to give you building permits. NC wants you to build and be happy.

I started making my own also. I use orange peels and cinnamon sticks which makes it easy to take out after the flavors are done. One 12 ounce bag tends to make one and a half pints for me and so far I use my immersion blender and then a sieve. I have UC and skins/seeds can cause me issues. I have people asking me for this every year now. LOL Buy them when on sale and freeze the bags until you can get to them.

Can you put meat in you beans for a flavor or a broth in the beans how about a little onions in the green beans??????
@twobearshomestead
@twobearshomestead 6 ай бұрын
You can certainly do a broth. Onions would be acceptable. You would have to can to the longest time for the individual product in Jar. Meat would have to be pressure canned at at 75/pints. 90/quarts. 90 minutes at 11lb pressure would most likely render the beans to mush.

Step One: Weigh Your Vanilla Beans - per FDA, .083 ounces (rounding up to 1 oz. is gooder) to every 8 oz. of alcohol (70 proof min. - 100 proof Max.). OTHERWISE if not enough beans per alcohol it is NOT Vanilla Extract. If you use less than 0.83 ounces per 8 ounces than it is ONLY a vanilla infused booze. Single fold (normal strength) 1 oz. beans - 8 oz. alcohol. Double Fold (2x strength) = 2 oz. beans in the jar to each 8 oz. alcohol. You could technically get away with the FDA minimums of multiples 0.83 ounces of beans and still be legit. Regardless, Have A Holly Jolly Christmas ! !
