I think you made the right decision when choosing the Lumix 14-28mm over the 16-35mm. I too had reservations over the variable aperture and definite vignetting @ 14mm at wide apertures, but like you said these don't usually become an issue in daylight landscape photography & for indoor shots, usually a tripod and or reflectors and flash can mitigate any disadvantages. Although for weddings a 16-35mm wide aperture zoom can generally be more useful than a variable aperture 14-28mm lens, I find that a 24-70mm F/2.8 zoom + a wide 18mm F/1.8 combination is a better option. Having for many years used 20/35/85mm wide aperture primes + two 35mm SLR bodies for weddings, it's a real delight not to have to carry so much equipment, and especially now that I'm retired the lighter variable zooms are a real boon! (Have you tried the 28-200mm Lumix S yet? I'd be interested in your views.)

well ... use manual mode with auto iso and exposure compensation. if the iso is too high you jsut tweak the shutter or apperture and repeat ...
@JasonFriendPhotography
@JasonFriendPhotography 6 күн бұрын
That would work… but in a fast flowing environment (think weddings) where your light levels can change quickly from shot to shot, I find setting the minimum shutter speed in the auto ISO settings is quicker. Just a case of controlling the amount of light coming in via aperture priority. Of course there are numerous ways you can achieve the same result… it’s just a case of doing what works for you.

Why not set the ISO upper limit? (At Upper/Default)
@JasonFriendPhotography

Do you mean so the iso doesn’t exceed 3200 (for example)? Yes, that would work but by setting the shutter speed as well (in auto iso settings) it will increase the iso slowly (keeping it as low as possible)

Cheers Pete. Yep… I’m not taken with it either - can’t see it being used again! I’ve got a collection of tripods… my favourite is a Gitzo carbon fibre one (I think it was part of their mountaineering range).., bought it second hand years ago (about £200) and it just keeps on going. I’ve also got a Benro Slim carbon fibre one (cost about £100 new) and that’s alright if the camera isn’t too heavy or it isn’t too windy - which isn’t ideal for a tripod. Honestly, tripods are a minefield.

I've shot the top of the line Olympus cameras since 2018 and was very happy with it and acquired a lot of glass. Last October curiosity got the better of me and I pulled the trigger on a used Z7ii. I shoot mostly landscape and nature with some macro on the side. I'd agree with your conclusions regarding creativity with m43. If I'm experimenting or shooting macro or something where I know I need to be able to access the controls quickly then I grab the om-1 because I know I can do basically anything with it. If I know I've got a straightforward landscape shoot ahead of me, especially in low light, then I grab the nikon. And yes, I need less processing with the full frame, but I'm so used to processing the olympus raw files by now that it's not an issue.
@JasonFriendPhotography
@JasonFriendPhotography 14 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment (and sorry for the delayed response). So, are you using the Z7ii much or fro you find that you lean towards the OM1? I’ve still got my full frame gear but find myself more and more just grabbing the OM1 as I know it can pretty much do what I need. And, can you see much difference between the cameras when it comes to the finished image?
@MikePageKaltenberg
@MikePageKaltenberg 14 күн бұрын
@JasonFriendPhotography it depends on whether I'm going out for a hike or on a photo hunt. It depends on the weather. It depends on how much computational photography is going to be involved. If I know it's just going to be about landscape photography, then I take the nikon.

Thanks Jason, very interesting video. I was a M43 shooter for many years but sold it all during/just after covid and bought in to the Lumix S5. For some reason I was not happy with the S5, so sold it at the start of 2024 and went back to M43, buying the OM5 and then the OM1-II. I also bought lots of glass to go with it, but as good as the OM1-II is.... brilliant AF, good computational features (Live ND, Live GND, Live Time, Live Bulb etc) I was never really happy and I ended up going back to Nikon (which I had before going M43) and the Z8. For some reason this just fits my hands better and I love the ergonomics. I've since sold the OM1-II and now all I get on KZbin are people buying in to the OM1/OM1-II cameras! Oh well, good luck with it, they ARE great cameras, but for some reason it didn't suit me. Still have my OM5 but like you, the build quality is always back of my mind! Looking forward to more photo-centric videos in 2025. Happy new Year!

Contrast detection autofocus works well for photography. Autofocus isn’t very sticky in video. These bodies have excellent video features. Wish there was a microphone jac. The small EVF is small but is adequate. I’m so glad there is an EVF for this small body. Love the L monochrome D joegs from the GX9. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

Hi i just bought eos 55 from a local thrift store here but the top display is off and the quick control dial on the back door is missing, my question is just because i cant set my iso manually, is it possible to auto adjust iso with the dx coded film rolls like kodak gold 200, also do you think its possible to lock focus with the af pressing half way of the shutter button then continue with the composing before pressing the other half down to take the final image? looking forward to your thoughts.. Regards.

I must confess, I only got one right. I ‘upgraded’ to FF 2 years ago after 12 years as an APS-C shooter. I used to get involved in online arguments with people who went from crop to FF, and were ‘blown away’ by the difference, which was ‘night and day’ apparently, but when you asked them to put up side by side images to show what they’d experienced the excuses would start. My initial reaction was disappointment. In terms of pure IQ, I couldn’t tell hardly any difference. My 2009 Canon 7D, a camera plagued (apparently) with a noisy sensor, was holding its own against my Canon R6, a camera sharing a sensor with the 1DX3, Canon’s flagship body. I bought the R6 for its ISO performance, and the animal eye AF, which was a game changer, but I did think in pure IQ terms I would have gotten a boost. Instead of using ISO 800 as my walk around setting, and at a push going to ISO 1600, I was now using AUTO ISO and taking shots at 6400 and being happy. My subjects were birds/mammals etc, and freezing their motion was essential, and now I could without the worry my limited PP skills not being able to cope with what I took home. So, if I took shots at base ISO, side by side I doubt many would be capable of being 100% accurate as to which ones were which, unless zoomed in on better monitors than mine.
