The upcoming X-wing alliance offers a lot of possibilities. Our limits are only set by our imagination and what people are willing to try. Being open benefits everyone involved. Who knows, people might even find a whole new favorite mode of game they never tried before.
@HairyNick2 күн бұрын
While true, and I love the possibility, we are also limited somewhat by the fact that the game is in the hands of an IP holder (even if they don't produce it) so there is some legal technicalities for the XWA to navigate.

@HairyNick Hopefully any potential restrictions push them to be even more creative to reach goals. We have a LOT of smart, out of the box thinkers in the community to draw on so these are likely minor speed bumps.

2.5 made me stop playing. I loved 2.0 and just couldn't really get behind 2.5 when I played it. Most my friends went on without me but also then stopped as well. There was a want to go back to 2.0 and when we did we realized it wasn't nostalgia, it's a genuinely better rule set.
@HairyNick3 күн бұрын
That seems to be a common story, and one that pretty much describes myself as well. Although I did hang for a bit. Playing 2.5 at the Australian nationals was still a lot of fun. Although I think that spekas more to the core loop of the game, rather than the changes made for 2.5.
@Mockthenerd3 күн бұрын
Honestly I stopped playing when they fired the people who actually made the game and did a bunch of unnecessary and unwanted changes. Me and my friends play the base 2.0 rules from time to time and it's still one of the best games we've ever played. The fact you can take on a top meta list and surprise win with a dumpy list (while it's not in your favor) has always been a great sign for me.

Recently picked up Skystrike Academy, Fury of the First Order, a Xi Shuttle, an extra TIE FO and SF, and Hotshots and Aces II to fill out my collections for both factions. Maybe one day I pick up a Decimator but never was a big fan Empire collection fills up an entire tackle box. It's actually hilarious looking at how small my FO range is in comparison even after adding 6 more models to it

Sadly, community created ships will likely be a non-starter. Disney is way too protective of their IP to allow something like that. It's one thing if people just tweak the points, but as soon as you get into printing new cards or ships they will shut it down.

I collected mostly Empire, and a bit of Scum with a smattering of Rebels and Force Awakens starter. I just looked at the price of a Skystrike Academy box, and really wish I'd picked one up back when they were released. Kinda wish I'd gotten a Hound's Tooth and a Punishing One as well. Maybe if the market settles down over the years I can snag some. That's a nice Squiddy Boy you've got there! I really wish they'd done more with Epic. I'd love to see some Epic scale stuff more in something narrative like Heroes of the Aturi Cluster. Maybe someone can cook something like that up as well?

Indeed! In the meantime you can always play with them in 2.0 or Legacy. But given there is no current structure for them in 2.5, we may be seeing them get implimented sooner rather than later. They don't have the same issue of having to wait for OP to end like other ships. :)

Reminds me, I have not yet unboxed my Squidieboi. But little incentive to do that without any local scene primarily, and secondarily no epic support. Consequently though, while XWA has some limitations on what we can do currently with GT's going on, AMG never touched huge ships (despite promises otherwise), so that is fertile ground to really dig into sooner than later.

"Pheonix edition" has a real nice ring to it. Also, on brand! If you ever do get a chance to look at one of these second edition Huge Ship boxes, the base and stands are MUCH higher quality than the 1.0 release (I have a 1.0 C-roc for comparison). Plus the movement tool is hard plastic. Felt really good value overall (especially because huge ships seem to be decently discounted atm).

@LeeHobbies6 күн бұрын
It's a bad situation. I still play, but I don't know a single person who moved out of 1.0 so I'm imagining that the biggest community out there are the first edition owners - that's when the game blew up and sold in staggering numbers, 2.0 was a big downturn. If there was (and I realise there isn't) a way that people could play with the minis they own, across all editions, then that would be a win. Maybe it would need a unified, printable set of generic base cards, upgrades etc. Any serious attempt to keep the game alive must include the widest section of the community, which is inevitably those who own 1st ed. And I mean include in the sense of the minis, the ruleset can be 2.0/2.5, but it's the cards and base variances that 1st ed owners don't have and won't want or be able to buy.
@HairyNick6 күн бұрын
@@LeeHobbies yup. Great thing about not having to follow the rules of a manufacturer is no longer needing official components. We are now in a situation where we could very easily incorporate any mini into any ruleset with no cost to the player. The dials is the most challenging aspect, but list building is super easy. Up to date obstacles and tokens can be bought 3rd party, but they arent necessary to build any particular list. So, actually, there very much is a realistic path to include players with 1.0 collections.

I see no reason why the X-wing Alliance can't be a steward for multiple formats with the different rules editions, and both with ones frozen in time and ones that continue to try to refine and evolve them. Beyond saying that their word isn't gospel and people can just do what they want, there doesn't have to be this false ultimatum between people that just want to play with their 1.0 components and 2018 FFG points lists and those that want to see a '2.75' that tries to walk back AMG's worse ideas and revisit the ones that had promise but poor execution. There's room for community OP with both. Hell, bring HotAC into the fold while we're at it.

So my community had a 2.0 legacy night recently and it was a lot of fun, but funny enough I brought brobotts at 199 points and played another player also flying 199 brobotts. We both agreed that the game would be won based on initiative win, so… we played with ROAD. It was actually a fun and close game. I didn’t think I liked ROAD, but this was the first instance of it actually made a game fun… so call me a hypocrite but I see the merit now. I still don’t like the bump and range 0 rules though, but year I love 2.0 list building but hate bidding. I hope we as a community can make a 2.75 that brings the best parts of both game modes together. 2.0 or 2.5 doesn’t really matter, build lists for both formats, play both modes. The game will only survive if we keep playing as much as possible. Just my 2 cents
@HairyNick9 күн бұрын
There's absolutely something to ROAD. I was surprised how much I enjoy it, after initially pinning it as my biggest concern going into 2.5. But yes, much prefer 2.0 bumping rules. There seems to be a lot of people speaking up for ROBD (random order before dials), which would cut down on the randomness factor and probably do away with the need for 2.5 bumping rules, which was always a bandaid to make ROAD work.

The only difference is that NECA doesn't have a Star Wars license right now or maybe ever in their history. IF anyone from the community could reach out to NECA at their San Diego Comi-con booth to mention that X-wing & Armada are open for a possible purchase perhaps they would be willing. Maybe WIZKIDS would like the idea to just make cards & the miniatures could be 3-D printed by the individuals to defray the costs.

When X-Wing came out I knew it would be huge. I also knew miniature games built upon a current IP don't last very long. So I did not get involved. X-Wing has had a very good run for this type of product. When you look at it, what are they supposed to do? How many more Star Wars ships are there to make? Plus, as you said you can play this forever. Making new scenarios is part of the fun of these games.
@HairyNick9 күн бұрын
There is a clear cutoff point as new content was releasing (movies and shows) that development of new ships ground to a halt. It was and is extremely noticable, the lack of Mando's N1 for a example is a clear gap in the range. Given also, we are starting to get content from a whole ner era in the saga, and the only minor smattering of EU content that wsa delved into by FFG in the early days, I would say the game feels far from complete.
