how do I rib with a straight edge if I start from a chain? usually you chain one more and start with the single stitches... but this creates a bump on the edge that ruins the otherwise straightness.

In my early 20s my grandma tried to teach me but by then she was mostly blind from glaucoma, and also crocheted left handed. KZbin was brand new then and I found a video of someone teaching how to crochet. That helped me fill in the gaps from what I was learning from my grandma. Now I'm not sure if I crochet more like my grandma did, or the woman I watched on KZbin. I hold the hook in my right hand in a knife grip. The yarn in my left hand comes down sort of between the first knuckles of my ring and middle finger, and I pinch my work between my left thumb and index finger. I raise and lower (straighten and bend) my middle and ring fingers to yarn over. I've been crocheting for about 18 years now and have taught both of my boys, my husband, and a few others to crochet, but I didn't even realize until a few years ago that they way I handle my yarn is so much different than what is normally seen on KZbin and tiktok.

If I’m really having trouble with a pattern, I will chart it out. By doing this I can visually see the repeat and can usually figure out what I need to do.

Dear Mrs. Tuulaa Maaria, Many thanks for your very clear tutorial! Your method as you do it, is fantastic! From now on this is the only and real way for me to do it this way. I have already seen many videos with different techniques to get rid of that ugly seam, but especially with crocheting a half double crochet I found it difficult to apply. (Stretch my loop on the hook, hold on to the back of that loop with my index finger, bring the tip of my hook towards me down and behind the sretched out loop. Insert my hook into the top of the same stitch.) I am very happy that you also explain your method how to crochet a half double crochet and treble crochet. You don't see that much on KZbin! Once again many thanks and I subscribed to your channel. Warm greetings from the Netherlands!

I inherited my grandmother's knitting tools and the box had the hairpin lace loom just like you showed. I finally found out what the weird metal frame was for, thank you! What is hairpin lace in finnish?

Can you do this method after you have already started the mesh stitch traditionally in your work? Would the method be the same?

I think you can, you would just need to finish your current row and then start the next row as the second row explained in this video
