As someone who has studied, and reported on, deception and fraud in the sciences, so much of this echoes what we see (on the very rare occasion) when scientists fabricate data. I imagine this also rhymes with PID use in athletics. Typically, the cheating scientist has been working on a particular topic for well over a decade, and they consistently reach 90-99% of what they need to publish positive results of their experimental results. There then comes a critical point of overwhelming pressure in the form of funding not being renewed, experimental windows closing, or in some cases, immense personal grief from a divorce or romantic failure, or in some cases, an opportunity to be presented on the global stage by the media. What then happens is they fudge the data ever so slightly so that 99% becomes 100%. They do this as a type of poker bet… going “all in” on a hand that they earnestly believe is a winner with full confidence it won’t be long before their ongoing efforts will get them to the 100% without cheating. This happens at a very subtle level, and almost always through manipulating how data is processed as opposed to the data itself. My conjecture with Billy Mitchell is that he most likely feverishly dialed in his DK gameplay to the point where he could consistently get a 900,000+ score, but his mistakes were so tiny and sporadic that he felt he was more than capable of getting a 1,000,000 run. He knew he would get there eventually, but the pressure of the cameras compelled him to stitch together a run. Ironically enough, i bet you that if we could actually dissect the real “run” that he did, there would probably only be 1 or 2 save scums. Such is the tragic irony of high achievers that cheat. Their work ethic is insane, but they risk it all for that little tiny 1% gain that makes all the difference in the world. (Side note: there’s a big developing story in Anthropology right now regarding the early hominid Homo Naledi that could turn out to be another Billy Mitchell story. He stated that he wouldn't show his work. There is the issue here. More likey: he was accused of cheating because he actually was cheating and copying the work of others. I'm 4.5 hours through this video. I've followed many of the FE, YEC, ID and other pseudoscience videos on KZbin for close to 20 years. What I find most worrying is that much of what Veritas describes in terms of the intellectual dishonesty of FE (and other types of science denial) seems to be hemorrhaging into political discourse. The old pseudoscience debate tactic of flooding the zone with lies, or assertions (AKA the "Gish Gallop") is now in the political mainstream rather than skulking on the fringes of respectable public discourse. I often wonder if years of "debates" that gave public platforms to people arguing dishonestly and in bad faith to support pseudoscience laid the groundwork for what we're now seeing in politics.

The Folding Ideas-video really ruined this type of FE-analysis for me. (The first 2/3 of the video, I mean) It's not to say this isn't fun, but the main point that that video was able to convey in 2 hours, was that the core of the "debate" with Flat Earth-believers only has the "appearance" of scientific or factual debate with one foot in philosophy (and two in semantics), while the core fundamentals of it center on questions of religious and political beliefs with a smattering of sociology. Which makes debunking flat earth on the facts more of a mental exercise for the one doing the critique, rather than an effective tool in engaging with Flerfers.
