Great job. I am waiting delivery of my first Tenkara. 76 years old and have been an avid fly fishing angler since the age of 12, when I got a Shankespere glass rod for my birthday. I have a lot to unlearn and a lot of new things to learn. Coneheads can be rod killers....ask me how I know. I subbed.

@ZenTenkara 3 күн бұрын
76 years young! Tenkara will make you feel 12 again. You'll use all the same foundational skills with a few minor adjustments. Im confident you'll be landing fish in no time. My best tips are: Avoid turning your tenkara rod into a candy cane. Instead aim for an arc or half circle. This keeps pressure out of the tip and encourages you to get into more of the belly of the rod. Play to side as much as possible. This help you to get into that arc shape or "power curve" and avoid the candy cane shaped rod which often occurs when you play high over head. Strive for even steady pressure on the fish and the rod. This minimizes bouncing which can cause you to lose fish, and sudden intense pressure on a single point along the length of the rod. Finally, when you land a fish and grab the line, grab low verses high. This will make sure you done accidentally pull the rod tip down and breaking it while you grab the line. Tight lines and happy fishing. Reach out if you have questions or need some support. Always happy to help.

Fantastic! Some of the fish were huge and very strong. Was using 15/16lb test. They were not tippet shy...never seen flies before and sometimes.would.still break off. We were told to bring brighly colored streamer and salmon-type flies in orange and pink. BUT we never hooked any with these flies. We caught everything on nymphs like big pheasant tails...traditional stuff and large sparkle scuds and pupa type flies. It is a beautiful country with wonderful people. Where are you going to be?

We will be sailing around the south of Greenland coming from Iceland and then sticking to the western side for the month. I am working as an expedition guide and we often go out for excursions near lakes and streams. Saw a whole bunch of big char last year so have decided to buy a tenkara setup that I can travel with and quickly setup when I get to a suitable stream. Thank you for the help. I will make sure to take strong tippit and enough nymphs.

IT's the trickiest part to land a fish on the long line. Especially if you are alone. I think landing net with long handle is preferred for tenkara? I use regular fly fishing net, which is short, and I can't stretch my arm too far
@ZenTenkara
@ZenTenkara Ай бұрын
It absolutely is "trickier" to land fish when casting a long line. And a long handle net definitely helps. But once you do it a few times you get more comfortable with it and much more proficient at it. I don't think twice about a 25ft or 35ft setup. Of course a net buddy is always appreciated but doing it yourself will allow you to get better at handling those long line. Sometimes depending on the water Im fishing, I lay my rod in it. It floats and isn't going anywhere since Im holding the line - but you can't do that everywhere.

I fish from my kayak in Tampa area and am exploring fly/ tenkara options for sight-fishing redfish. I’m considering Tenkara but the length of the kyojin has me second guessing whether it would be practical in comparison to a 7.5 ft or 9 ft traditional 8wt setup. Do you know of any customers that have had success in a similar setup to a kayak?

@ZenTenkara 2 ай бұрын
Generally we recommend either two of our rods - the Zen Taka or the Kyojin. While we've used the Sagi on smaller bones up to about 3lbs saltwater is unpredictable so a beefier rod ilike the Taka or Kyojin is safer. When considering these rods the Kyojin is hands down the strongest and most capable rod when dealing with wind, long lines and potentially bigger flies. It has a much stiffer tip than the Taka which allows uou to cast 30ft even 40ft setups into heavy wind, and has the backbone to land bones, tarpon, shark, baracudda, jacks, junior permit...even trigger fish. No lie, it takes some skill and understanding your rod flex and the Fishing Triangle. But we've had incredible success and landed fish people would think impossible. The Taka is an awsome and very strong rod but the softer tipcan make it difficult to cadt a really long line if there is strong wind.

how properly attach tippet to that line? it has both loop and microring on "orange" tag end
@ZenTenkara
@ZenTenkara 3 ай бұрын
There are two loops on the Fusion Line and our AllPurpose Floating Lines: One large (with a tag end) and one small (on the All Pupose Lines this is the orange end with the tippet ring). The large loop is your connection loop which attaches to your lillian cord on your tenkara rod. You will make a simple hitch by 1) opening the loop by inserting you thumb and index fingers 2) with those fingers holding the large loop open, grab your line and pull a small amount through so that a circle loop is formed 3) insert your lillian cord through the middle of that newly formed circle loop and twist it through twice 4) cinch the hitch down tight. Here is a link to a video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3qsmJKEmL1mq7Msi=SVTH8ExAkbgJYMY9 While the vide demos the attachment using our All Purpose Line, the method is exactly the same on either line. Now, utilizing the small loop on the opposite end of your Fusion Line, we suggest using a loop-to-loop connection with either straight tippet or a tapered leader. You can also use a clinch knot and go straight tippet. On the AllPurpose Line we suggest tying on straight tippet using the tippet ring to protect the coating on the line. For longer leader/tippet set ups on the All Purpose Line, use a loop-to-loop connection. Make sense? If not, please let me know.

Thats really weird, the dance that angler is doing to land the fish, rod kept almost level/zero bend on rod? I thought for Tenkara rods, you show the fish the butt of the rod and let the rod do the work?
@ZenTenkara
@ZenTenkara 7 ай бұрын
The rod is very bent but I'm afraid that the angle of the camera does not show it very well. It is more visable in some of our other videos. There is more to it than Showing the fish the butt of your rod. If you overdo that, you will put too much pressure on the tip sections and a break will occur. THe rod is your tool but it's not doing all the work and the angler just holds on. Instead it is a give and take and requires the angler to understand their rod and how to apply pressure on the fish to maintain control and keep it from running but not simply dragging it in or horsing it in. When a bonefish runs you can't just stand there and let the rod flex. Infact too much flex will mean you loose the ability to steer and manage the fish and can also mean too much "bounce" in the rod increasing the chance of the fish throughing the hook due to uneven tension on the line. Landing big fish on tenkara takes skill, understanding the foundations of fish managemewnt and angles, AND a rod build for the task.

Well, my advice is if you are sleeping on a cot, you should have some type of closed cell foam pad under at least the main portion of your body for insulation. When we camp in Colorado for elk hunting, we use cots, and they have been very cold without a sleeping pad. The ratings of each company are very subjective. A lot has to do whether you’re a warm sleeper or a cold sleeper. I saw several reviews of the.Nemo saying it was cold sleeping at 20 degrees and they would rate it more of a 30 degree bag. After a little research I would choose the Thermarest probably. Followed by the Hike and Bike bag. If space is not an issue you could always get a z-rest 3/4 length foam pad to help insulate your main body and put extra clothes under your legs for insulation. Also are use a kitchen scale to weigh all of my gear. Often times the manufacturer weights can be off. Another thing to add insulation is to wear a down jacket and longjohns and wool socks in your bag. When we did the float in Alaska for two weeks, we brought long sleeping bags and put our waiters wrapped in a garbage bag in the bottom of our sleeping bag to prevent freezing overnight. Another great thing to bring would be hand or body warmers! They have served us very well on those extra cold nights, and they weigh very little! A hat or a balaclava will also hold in a lot of heat while sleeping.👍 I hope this helps and I hope you have a wonderful and safe trip!🙏🏻🎣💜
@ZenTenkara
@ZenTenkara 11 ай бұрын
THANK YOU! Great information and things to consider. The cots will have a 3" foam pad, so "glamping". I usustuff my extra clothing into my bag to keep them warm for dressing in the morning and for taking up space in my sleeping bag. I am limited on weight for the flight and rods, reels, flies, boots and waders can add up quickly on weight, so my packing list has to be very thoughtful and intentional. Nine days is a long time if you are uncomfortable.
@markklis6875
@markklis6875 11 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Being comfortable is key. In light of that, I would probably pick the bag that feels most comfortable. I often use my bag as a top quilt if I have adequate bottom insulation. Out of interest, what are the differences between this and the fusion line? I'm new to tenkara and I have been looking into longer lines for the mountain lakes where I live in North Wales here in the UK. I really like the ideas behind tenkara fishing but in some ways felt it may be a little limiting. I haven't had chance to play about too much with different lines really. Just 2.5m and 3m #3.5 and #4 fluorocarbon level lines. I must say, your videos have given me a desire to keep exploring the scope of Tenkara fishing. The rod I have is a very soft action rod too. Am I liable to struggle casting a longer floating line?
@ZenTenkara
@ZenTenkara Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Our All Pupose/Floating Tenkara Lines are very very light and only .0028" of an inch in diameter. In the shorter lengths they take the place of Tenkara Level Line (which is typically 100% flurocarbon) for it's delicateness and ultralight presentation, and traditional furled or braided tenkara lines (which are heavy, easier to cast but can absorb water). We tried to take the best of both these worlds and design these lines. They come in 6 different lengths. The short lengths are fished tight and off the surface of the water. The longer lengths can be laid out on the surface since they float. This allows to to cast very light but still very long lines. The Fusion Lines are different in that they are much heavier and you will feel your rod load in a more exaggerated way. OUr Fusion Lines are custom grain weighted so they don't overload the rod but cast more like a conventional fly line on a conventional fly rod and reel. They are are designed to be laid on the surface of the water, they can be mended and cast effortlessly. So for longer casting you have options. I really enjoy our Fusion Lines and find them exceptionally easy to cast and manage regardless of the rod brand you have. Most anglers enjoy the Fusion Light but if you have a very stiff rod you may prefer the Midweight - depending on the manufacturer. At several of the recent fly fishingshow that we attended in February, many people tried casting the Fusion Lines and fel in love with them, not wanting to hand the rod over to someone else to try. They are really fun and beautiful to cast.
