Very cool video Tom, thanks for posting! It was interesting to hear the thick cast snares, compared to the classic thin Supra. Did you end up selling both your 3 and 5 mil Savage snares?

Great video bro , how would you compare the low end on the 5mm vs the Tama re issue ?
@Tom.Thorslund23 күн бұрын
Thanks! They are very close but I think that Tama hits a bit lower with more sub. The 5mm is close and is a bit more open sounding.

Absolutely GREAT sounding snare drums, all 3 of them!! Your tuning and head suggestions are also spot on. I have a 3mm DW Bronze snare drum (6 1/2 x 14) and it sounds fantastic as well. It took some time figure out how to tune it up, and as you stated, that bottom head needs to be really tight, top head should be med./high tight as well, and they will sing, but with balls. And yes a 3mm shell thickness minimum is needed for that extra heft as you say. Love your drumming and I too own Paiste cymbals, so really liked it all my man...

I have a 2011 Desert Burst Standard Traditional and I love what you've done with yours. I was planning to get the Faber ABR-1 and the Mojotone 59 Clone pickups...might have to check out the Wizz pups now, they sound pretty mean!
@Tom.Thorslund3 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yeah Wizz are terrific. The old wire versions are even better. I also highly recommend Brandonwound. But the Faber bridge will absolutely transform it immediately. Those stick ABR's are crap. You'll get such a fatter, warmer and more vintage tone instantaneously. You may even find you dont need to change your pups!

Great video for a few reasons. 1. I owned the Keplinger and sold it. It’s good to hear it again! 2. I haven’t heard a lot of recorded maple Ayottes snares and the lighter colored one is amazing! 3. I owned a custom Ayotte kit and could never get it to sound great. Yours does sound great! Thanks for making this. From a former Ayotte endorser.

Hey do you all feel a lot of diference if its 1mm or 3mm? I have seen people saying that a more thick sheel does not really makes the sound better If a buy a 1mm brass and a 3mm brass snare it would make all the diference? Awesome snares by the way.
@Tom.Thorslund4 ай бұрын
I think there is definitely a big difference between 1mm to 3mm, but probably less from 3 to 5+. 3mm shells just have such a strong and beefy response that thinner shells can't really replicate. Not to say a 1mm shell is a bad drum, just that if you are looking for that HEFT in each hit, you need a 3mm+.
@DennisLeeflang4 ай бұрын
Great playing dude! I did a shootout between a vintage Tama and two Savages (on my channel) and I preferred both Savages over the Tama, albeit a pretty subtle difference. The savages had more lows and no annoying overtones (the Tama didn’t have a lot of annoying overtones but I definitely would reach for some gaff when recording with that drum while the Savages sound dialed in with no muffling). The 3mm Savage being my favorite. The one thing about the vintage ones (and probably also the Savages) is that no two of them sound identical because sand casting isn’t a very exact/consistent process. There’s also a percentage of shells that come out unusable. Which is why they decided to do the centrifugal casting for the reissues. More consistent and less/no bad shells. That different process does also change the sound slightly once again. Either way, if you threw a vintage Tama and a few more Savages in the mix, they would all sound a little different so it’s hard to make a definite statement about which is better. And then the differences are subtle. All killer drums. But at half the price of a reissue and about a third of the price of a vintage, I’d buy a Savage again any day!
@Tom.Thorslund4 ай бұрын
Thanks Dennis! It was actually your shootout video of those snares that set me on this quest in the first place! I really love all these snares, but have to say, the Tama reissue just is in a league of its own. Though I do agree with you that at half the price, its hard to justify not getting a Savage instead. Thanks for your comment! We've also recently bought your Y cables and are getting some very tasty tom sounds on our new recordings!

Wanted to add a small clarification. So, apparently Tama never actually produced a 5mm shell! It was simply a typo in the first Ad that appeared for the bell brass snare and because of that many believed that the "Terminator" was 5mm because it apparently was a prototype model. But it seems that isn't true, and all 1980's Tama Bell Brass snares were indeed 3mm. Because of that, I now have a 3mm Savage replica on the way and will shoot a new video to compare the 5mm to the 3mm to the Gretsch 3mm. That will be interesting!

the keplinger has that horrible overtone after ring i hate from coated ambassadors! the gretch and savage dampen that out.
@Tom.Thorslund Жыл бұрын
Really? I don't hear that. The Keplinger is actually an emperor. The Gretsch and Savage are both Ambassadors. I found that the keplinger did have some harsh overtones when it had steel hoops, but the wood hoops really helped control it and bring out some lower end body too.

who is Ayotte Keplinger? is this the KEPLINGER from seattle - AKA KEPLINGER SNARES ?
@Tom.Thorslund Жыл бұрын
Ayotte was a custom drum company out of Canada. They were super popular in the 90s and early 2000's but have not been in production for like 5-10 years now. Gregg Keplinger from Seattle worked with them to create the Ayotte Keplinger snare. So it is a Gregg Keplinger 3mm stainless steel shell with Ayotte's quick release lugs and wood hoops. Absolutely amazing snare.

Nice video. Great sounds. You dont have other sizes than 14x6,5 right? I see you are a big fan of the very Bonhan sound really. That supraphonic would be the cheaper one right?
@Tom.Thorslund Жыл бұрын
Most of my snare are 14x6.5 but I do have a Pearl masters custom maple 14x5.5 which is also a nice drum. I'm definitely a Bonham fan. The Supra would indeed be the cheapest if you were to buy a reissue, however this one is from 1976 and is pretty mint so is worth at least $1000. If you got a new Supra you need to remove the rubber gaskets from the lugs and swap the hoops for 1.8mm hoops vs the 2.3mm hoops that come with it now. All vintage Ludwig's up until 1977 used 1.8mm hoops. It definitely gives the drums a different sound.
