Absolutely GREAT sounding snare drums, all 3 of them!! Your tuning and head suggestions are also spot on. I have a 3mm DW Bronze snare drum (6 1/2 x 14) and it sounds fantastic as well. It took some time figure out how to tune it up, and as you stated, that bottom head needs to be really tight, top head should be med./high tight as well, and they will sing, but with balls. And yes a 3mm shell thickness minimum is needed for that extra heft as you say. Love your drumming and I too own Paiste cymbals, so really liked it all my man...

I’ve got a Savage 5mm 8” deep with bell brass hoops. It’s absolutely stunning.

Oh man they’re so close. I’ve got a 3mm savage on the way this year, but I got the same scorched earth finish that was on Lars’ signature drum. Great video man!

Great playing dude! I did a shootout between a vintage Tama and two Savages (on my channel) and I preferred both Savages over the Tama, albeit a pretty subtle difference. The savages had more lows and no annoying overtones (the Tama didn’t have a lot of annoying overtones but I definitely would reach for some gaff when recording with that drum while the Savages sound dialed in with no muffling). The 3mm Savage being my favorite. The one thing about the vintage ones (and probably also the Savages) is that no two of them sound identical because sand casting isn’t a very exact/consistent process. There’s also a percentage of shells that come out unusable. Which is why they decided to do the centrifugal casting for the reissues. More consistent and less/no bad shells. That different process does also change the sound slightly once again. Either way, if you threw a vintage Tama and a few more Savages in the mix, they would all sound a little different so it’s hard to make a definite statement about which is better. And then the differences are subtle. All killer drums. But at half the price of a reissue and about a third of the price of a vintage, I’d buy a Savage again any day!

Thanks Dennis! It was actually your shootout video of those snares that set me on this quest in the first place! I really love all these snares, but have to say, the Tama reissue just is in a league of its own. Though I do agree with you that at half the price, its hard to justify not getting a Savage instead. Thanks for your comment! We've also recently bought your Y cables and are getting some very tasty tom sounds on our new recordings!

Great video bro , how would you compare the low end on the 5mm vs the Tama re issue ?
@Tom.Thorslund8 күн бұрын
Thanks! They are very close but I think that Tama hits a bit lower with more sub. The 5mm is close and is a bit more open sounding.

Hey do you all feel a lot of diference if its 1mm or 3mm? I have seen people saying that a more thick sheel does not really makes the sound better If a buy a 1mm brass and a 3mm brass snare it would make all the diference? Awesome snares by the way.

I think there is definitely a big difference between 1mm to 3mm, but probably less from 3 to 5+. 3mm shells just have such a strong and beefy response that thinner shells can't really replicate. Not to say a 1mm shell is a bad drum, just that if you are looking for that HEFT in each hit, you need a 3mm+.
