I have just discovered your channel. I am a complete beginner, literally 2 pages of my sketch book full. My drawings are bad at the moment, but with your tips and advice I know I will improve. You have such a calming voice. Thank you.

Thank you, so much!!! I've been trying to switch to the overhand grip but I felt very awkward using it. Now I see how to train my arm and wrist control! Thanks a lot!

Thank you for these and the follow up exercises! I broke my right wrist a few weeks ago and am right handed, but have found it very frustrating not to be able to draw. I"ve been trying some of your exercses with my left hand holding the pencil in the "loose grip" and it's a real improvement! I can't wait to try it with my right hand when I heal enough. Thank you!!!

Oh wow, Im so glad to hear its been helpful! Its great that you are finding a way to keep drawing, and you may well find that using your other hand improves your overall drawing when you move back to your dominant hand. Hope you heal up soon!

Emily, I am in my mid sixties and have just embarked on a desire to draw & paint. I happened upon your videos by accident when looking for drawing tuition. I had no idea that there was any other way to hold a pencil apart from the one that I was taught. I couldn't sleep last night and decided to watch some videos on drawing. I started out with the Standard grip with some success, but then changed to the Loose grip, the results were much better and I found that I could be more fluid in my drawing. Thanks for teaching this Middle-aged dog some new tricks.

Yayy! Glad to hear it was useful. The different grips will suit different people and different situations so do try mixing it up when you are drawing. If you haven't seen my free Learn To Draw series on KZbin yet, it may help you on your drawing and painting journey: kzbin.info/aero/PL-i_GDP6hCKlsQCrB7SW0qKyXBNMocDar Best of luck!

Thank you for your videos I like your style I have been trying to learn to draw just for fun for a while and watched many you tube videos and checked out tons of books. The irony of it is that instead of finding drawing relaxing and enjoyable I have brought to the drawing all my anxieties and uptight habits and tendencies. So I am grateful for your style of presentation

Hi Gary, Thanks for your comment and for watching! You're not alone in not always finding drawing enjoyable. Learning to draw (for my students) and also practicing drawing (for myself) can bring up so many other issues like perfectionism, self doubt and patience. It can be really frustrating but if you can work through that and learn to accept it as part of the process then those challenges can also be rewarding. My advice is always to just do the work, do some small amount of practice, even if you feel like its no good, ignore the self doubt and eventually you'll look back and see how much you've improved 🙂

Overhand is definitely the toughest one for me.
@ThePencilRoomOnline2 жыл бұрын
Yep it takes some practice! But also, it’s only useful for certain situations like figure drawing at an upright easel, or large drawings and quick sketches - in my experience anyway. The other benefit is it makes you look fancy 😆

Do you have any tips on ways to draw lighter? I can’t seem to draw light lines, even with 4H pencils.
@ThePencilRoomOnline7 ай бұрын
Just practice and being completely aware of how much pressure your pencil is putting on the paper. With a 4H pencil you should be able to use it to draw dark grey lines but also to draw almost invisible lines. If the line is too dark or hard, try holding the pencil further back so you are not pushing down on the tip of it. Stay aware of the pressure of the pencil on the paper - it will feel unnatural at first to draw so light but if you can keep your mind on it and practice it, it will become much easier. Check out this tutorial if you havent already seen it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6WqfXqepK-Hars give it a go to practice shading light (and dark). Hope that helps, Emily

This question have probably an answer that's about preference, but which of the three is best for gesture drawing?
@ThePencilRoomOnline8 ай бұрын
If you are drawing upright at an easel then definitely overhand is best for gesture. If overhand is too big a change then use the loose grip (either at an easel or at a desk). For gesture drawing you want to keep your lines loose and fluid so sliding the hand freely across the page (working from the shoulder) is the most important thing :)

@THEPENCILROOMONLINE I find your videos easy to understand, practical and I wish to know why use a left hand for drawing? Not a criticism just curious if you’re a left handed person and is there any advantages to using left hand?
@ThePencilRoomOnline Жыл бұрын
Hi Benjamin, unfortunately I was just born left handed! There isnt any advantage and it makes things more difficult generally. BUT there is an advantage to doing exercises with your opposite hand: it forces you to slow down, to accept limitations, to discover new types of marks and over time you do become better at using your opposite hand - just never as good as your dominant hand. In my experience it also helps with a shift in the way you perceive what you are looking at. I don’t have a video on drawing with the opposite hand yet but you’ll no doubt find something on KZbin if you’re interested :)

@@ThePencilRoomOnline Hello, I had a feeling you are left handed, my hands are ambidextrous sort of, challenging one self produces better understanding etc, thank you for your reply

I'm sorry but as a beginner who never touch a pen to draw, I immediately switched to overhand style and somehow I immediately can do a lot of things from drawing perfect circles to other drawing straight lines. Should I keep going if I already have this "advantage"?
@ThePencilRoomOnlineАй бұрын
Definitely! Overhand can really loosen up the range of movement and fluidity of your drawing. But it's a balance between having that advantage and also maintaining control. So use whatever grip suits for what you are doing. You're lucky to have that versatility!
@Manimanocas4 ай бұрын
Hello, Is it wrong to have a grip similar to the tripod grip, but instead of the thumb being at the base, it holds the side of the pencil and grips the index finger? This is how I have always held a pencil, and I don't know if it's bad.
@ThePencilRoomOnline4 ай бұрын
Nope its not bad. Think of the tripod grip as whatever way you normally hold a pen to write with - that will be the easiest grip for you to use to draw with but it's good to practice overhand grip and loose grip to give you different types of movement ☺
