Did anyone notice near the end of the film by the rebuild was finished the BR blue livery was being adopted. Some of the trains were running with mixed green and blue carriages. (four green and four blue).It was bad enough adopting blue in the first place but when they repainted the Pullman carriages of the Brighton belle from brown to blue that was the final straw for me.The current Southern livery of white,light green and dark green doors(to me) is rather nice.I like the dark green doors "as a nod" to the old Southern livery.Can you imagine the Elecrostar trains being all blue? If the Brighton belle project is ever completed,which I hope it is,it will be lovely to see the Pullman multiple units in brown again.

Yes I remember it well. I was driving the train and had to jump out of the cab just prior to the impact. Ripped my boiler suit rolling along the gravel, the cost of which British Rail deducted from my pay. Oh yes, these were the days!

"Mummy, what did Daddy do for work?" "Well, dear, he wrote music for British Transport Films." "Is that why he sits in the corner and mumbles all the time?" "Oh. So why does Uncle Henry only have two fingers on his right hand?" "Oh, I guess because he helped assemble locomotives, like your Uncle Charles." "I don't remember Uncle Charles." "He was struck on the head by a tool falling when they were assembling another locomotive." "Is that why Uncle Peter is so crippled and bent over?" "No, he worked doing track maintenance for thirty years, and injured his back so much that he had to retire. He still has his tweed jacket that he wore to work, and looks at it sometimes for remembrance." "Where was that, Mummy?" "It was just down the lane where the bushes are in such a straight line now. There used to be railway there, but someone decided we didn't need it any more. Come on, let's get to the car so we can drive down to Derby and see Aunt Janet's new flat where there used to be locomotive factory. I hope there won't be awfully much traffic."

The story I heard was that NRC officials had proposed flask design criteria for America that were pretty weak compared to existing European criteria. The NRC sent a team to Europe to ask our allies what additional tests they would recommend, and the Germans said "well, you could hit it with a locomotive." The American team absolutely dissolved in laughter, and it took them a couple minutes to realize the Germans. Were. Not. Laughing. America has lagged behind Europe in terms of safety standards for quite a long time.

GEC/AEI large machines we never saw any of the management on any of the shop floors. While good entertainment this film is far from the truth about working in heavy engineering.

@tim31723 күн бұрын
Significant: 1. sufficiently great or important to be worthy of attention; noteworthy. "a significant increase in sales" 2. having a particular meaning; indicative of something. "in times of stress her dreams seemed to her especially significant" 3. Statistics relating to or having significance.

Great memories of the 1960s when the hustle and bustle of the railways was an everyday experience, almost everywhere in the country.

When I see people pissing about on railway lines, then this, it just makes me realise, even moreso, people have no respect for engineering. Nor the crews of the trains. I'm not talking about people having mental health crisises here, slightly different, more the idiots playing "chicken" or skipping X-ing gates etc.

Cant even make that size steel plate in the Uk now. All the heavy tools shown where given away to India and China in the 1980's. Any one remember all the rolling mills in the black country being shut down? Remember Magi Thatcher? The end of our nation and national pride? This Uk can NOT even build a gun barrel for a tank now. Let alown any bigger caliber. It is hoping Germany will set a factory up here to make medium sized arms here once again. Google it.

I’m sorry but this film should be not be shown because it implies a former mono-cultural view of Britain that is totally unacceptable in modern multicultural times. If it must be shown, it should be reshot with at least 50% black, coloured and sexually diverse actors with women taking all decision making roles.

Great historical education. Maybe we should think about how unionised the railways were then and why? The engines are complex. Dangerous exploding pressure vessels. Expensive. People cheap and thick. Teach people to do one job well reduces the risk of catastrophic failure. But why keep the unions when the engines are now all diesel or electric? So not as complex?

Wonderful machine, the steam engine.But even then superceded by an electric or diesel electric locomotive. It’s understandable how reluctant people were to let it all go.
