Great to see some AS1158 tutorials going up-nice work on the clip! There are a few areas you could refine to improve it further. Here’s some feedback to consider: AS1158.2 outlines the methodology for computer-aided calculations, so here are a few key aspects you missed that can significantly impact establishing compliant values, particularly for vertical illuminance: Vertical Illuminance: The measuring plane is valid up to 7 metres from the extremities of the area under consideration. Horizontal Illuminance: The measuring plane is valid up to 2.5 metres from the extremities of the area under consideration. Maintenance Factor: Include details on how to establish this, factoring in Luminaire Dirt Depreciation (LDD) and Light Source Lumen Depreciation (LLD). Control of Glare and Upward Waste Light: This is addressed in section 3.7 of AS1158.3.1 and includes the Discomfort Glare Index, Limitation of Luminous Intensity (LLI), and Upward Waste Light Ratio (UWLR). The standard doesn’t communicate this well, but these are as relevant to compliance as the illuminance levels. The standard assumes that asymmetric lighting is installed as photometered and without tilt, which is reflected in the equations governing discomfort glare and luminous intensity. Tilting luminaires alters the range of vertical candela angles, shifting peak intensities relative to the observer. For example, with asymmetric lighting, its good practice to specify the luminaire based on the direction and angle required for peak intensity without the need for tilt. Tilting changes this peak, often exceeding the thresholds set by the Discomfort Glare Index and Limitation of Luminous Intensity. In your example, a 10-degree tilt would almost certaintly push intensities above the fixed 65-degree observer angle, exceeding both DGIP and LLI thresholds. To avoid this, a good approach is to reference the 2D polar diagram and adjust the tilt to keep peak intensities as close to the 65-degree line as possible without exceeding it. In my experience, asymmetric fittings leave only 3-5 degrees of flexibility before becoming non-compliant. When i teach this stuff, I i teach tilt at the same time I teach about luminous intensity and in almost all cases, the luminare is designed to be specified as its photometerd, unless its aimable. It’s also worth noting that glare and obtrusive light mitigation are often not well understood but are key to meeting compliance and environmental considerations. Educating others on these aspects-particularly the Discomfort Glare Index, Limitation of Luminous Intensity, and UWLR-can help bridge this gap. If you’d like, I’m happy to walk you through the clacs and methodologies in more detail over a Zoom session-just inbox me. Keep up the good work on these videos!
