I’m 75 in five weeks and been listening to acoustic blues, ragtime and the like for decades. Some years ago I heard this track played on Radio 4 and it was one of those OMG moments. I phoned the BBC to identify it and ordered the CD immediately. I still have it of course. To my ear this is peak slide playing. Terrific…and a nice video too.

Death of Wilko Johnson brought me here ... memories of artists performing in the North London / Islington pub the Weavers Arms in 1980s and early 90s. Rainer hijacked a lazy midweek gig by cajun "Companions of the Rosy Hours" (I had friends in the band), completely unannounced, no press and pre-internet days, with a fan base of well over a hundred who packed the small venue. Although not our favourite kind of music we knew we were listening to something special ! This would have been early 1993, maybe co-incident with this broadcast, just after his "Worried Spirits" album which I was inspired to buy ... I've lived long enough to have outlived most of my musical heroes !

Thanks Litterboxmusic. Damn if this doesn't bring back some incredible memories of the two nights I got to see this extraordinary player. Good human being too. I talked to him after the 1st night, and he let me tape the 2nd night's performance. It was a one set guest spot with a local band. I found out later how rare it was for him to allow it. Seems every time he let someone tape, the night was a disaster somehow. Held true this time too. The club he was scheduled to play closed down the next morning. Owner just locked the doors and said tough luck. Luckily a local friend of his found him another gig sitting in with a local band about 45 minutes drive away. They were thrilled to have Rainer play with them that night. I was lucky to get a call about the change from his friend. I kind of knew him from the local music scene. After the show he told me was shocked that Rainer let me still tape, considering the history, and what had happened to his original gig that night Always a disaster. Yup. I treasure that tape, the memories of talking to the man for a while, and sharing a joint with him outside the club. RIP Rainer Ptacek

He and Chris Whitley seemed to meld spiritually to the Natiional Dobro in way that seems almost metaphysical, Music is from the heart and the soul, May they sail on into the cosmos forever.

I had the amazing pleasure of seeing Rainer twice. First time, he played a small blues club in Syracuse NY. I was really shooting some great pool that night. Held the table for an hour. Rainer came on and I could not keep my eye on the table. Couldn't believe I was hearing that much music out of one guy. Comping bass lines, playing rhythm, and picking out lead lines ALL AT THE SAME TIME!!!! 3 songs in , right in the middle of a game I gave up my stick and took a seat in front not 4 feet from him. He sang classic old Blues tunes, new blues tunes, his tunes, memorably a version of Paul Westerberg's "Can't Hardly Wait". Some 40 years later it's still a top ten concert.
