PLEASE!, For safety, try to avoid putting the dingy motor in gear while you are standing next to it. Boats, as you know, are squirrelly and getting into a habit of climbing next to an engaged motor is asking for stitches or worse. I would hate to hear that there was a prop injury. Just a hint of safety and staying concerned. Love watching Helios' education into sailing and boating. Keep it UP. Thank you.

Wtf that anchor procedure was just OTT.Constant calling of speed and depth totally irrelevant, you spent half the time not looking at the bow and where you were meant to be heading. Richard should just give you hand signals. No head sets required.
@sailinghelios202323 сағат бұрын
You sound very experienced. Jude is just learning so I think your comments are a bit harsh. But you should know that you can’t really steer a boat while the anchor is being lifted, especially when there is 15-20 knots of wind. I thought we made this point at the conclusion of the lift. Btw, she wasn’t calling depth she was calling out the length of chain so I could assess when to get it off the bottom as the boat veered back and forth on the chain.

On Bonaire we connected with a stray cat. She had the most beautiful bkue eyes. We fed her and over a couple of weeks she became part of our family. One day she brought her kittens with her and we fed them. When it was time to leave we didn’t know what to do. There was no one who we knew who would feed them. Then on the last day before departure I went to the shop for supplies and I saw the mother cat in the weeds. She had something in her mouth: a Big Lizard. We needn’t have worried. Cats are hunters and can survive quite well on their own.

Could you have used your dinghy to tow your boat when you got near the marona OR gone ahead in the dinghy and brought back diesel? Drop your sail, float, and go get diesel?
@sailinghelios20237 күн бұрын
Hi Ernie, the conditions did not allow us to take either or these options. We had an onshore breeze of about 20 knots and 2-3m seas so the tender would not be powerful enough to pull Helios in these conditions and it was too risky to anchor and go in by dinghy. If there were any issues getting Helios anchored then we would have been on the beach in a matter of minutes. Regards Richard

You are learning - but they are right. It’s a 2 person job. The first mate takes the bow line straight away and secures it asap. Whilst the captain on the helm also throws the windward stern line.!! Doing one at a time will get you in trouble if there is wind. Also Put the engine in idle forward once stern is secure! Once the boat is secure then adjust the lines as needed. From experience!
@sailinghelios202310 күн бұрын
Yes, what they wanted would have worked but if the person on the dock would have pulled the line tight rather than just tying off the end then we would have been ok. I suppose there is more than one right way to get the job done. We work on the principle of letting the boat and lines do the work rather than muscle. I just think it is dangerous for Jude to be trying to tie off a line when the boat is moving and under load. Boats perform differently and Helios will sit nicely with a stern line and a bit of forward power. I think the real learning here is that we all need to be on the same page when docking. It would have been nice to talk through this procedure first but they didn’t give us chance and this is the first time we have encountered this of two years of docking. Next time this happens I will abort and talk through what I want.

Later that day I popped into my local for a beer and when I tried to pay Niko replied “pay me tomorrow” . Thank Robbie. We did hit the boat to port so not that great ☹️. I think we managed a good save from lack of support from marinaros. That starboard stern line should have been tied off tightly, securely and immediately. And the dinghy should have been on the leeward side to push us.
@tonyhalsall317013 күн бұрын
It wasn’t shit. You did great, a bit shorter with the windward stern line and more confidence to add more power and that would have been 100%. That said, at 99% you did great in those conditions. Well done. Just don’t argue with the dockhands, your plan was right at the outset. PS. First thing this morning, at 11am 😂
@sailinghelios202313 күн бұрын
Well picked up Tony. I did not notice when we docked that she just looped the end of the stern line rather than pulling it tight. This meant that I had about 8m of line and when I motored forward I headed for the boat to port (1 berth over) rather than turning. Seeing this I backed off power so we didn’t hit hard and the fenders did most of the work with a small hull to hull knock that didn’t do any damage. I’m glad I made the decision not to take the bow line straight away. That would have put Jude in a very dangerous position trying to tie off a line with the boat still moving. In hindsight I think the best option would have been to not dock and agree on procedures with them first and then start again.

I moved to an iPad Pro a few years ago, super fast no issues easy to edit on LumaFusion and upload via the youtube studio app, super fast 4k upload and optimisation. Used my iPad Pro for work also and never need a pc again. Other than to update any old Raymarine systems on the boat so worth keeping hold of a laptop for that. I am just about to pop star link mini on our boat too. Will make things faster when sailing down to the med next year.
