intro's are overrated yes. But yours was Absolutely amazing. Also I liked the movie better than the original version. Because this story, on stage, felt incredebly rushed at times. It needs a longer runtime to be a proper adaptation. And no disrespect to the musical it wasn't bad by any means but I felt the movie is the definitive version (act/part 1 at least)

Usually I'd say the warping of the story to make the antagonist more likable and the protagonist more obtuse is somehow a result of casting a diva as Miranda and shifting the focus, but that wouldn't really explain minimizing everything that makes Andy relatable. Makes me wonder if the person responsible for the changes personally identified more with Miranda and genuinely didn't get what was so compelling about Andy's personal life.
@annevanderelst2472 күн бұрын
Yes actually 🤔 the idea that the writer naturally relates more to Miranda makes a lot of sense here… i think you might be on to something

Can we please talk about Musical Andy's hair?? Anne Hathaway's hair in the movie feels timeless and current, the piecey bangs are so chic and a perfect way to signify her style evolution, but the musical makes Andy look like a soccer mom!! A long bob with side bangs feels so incredibly dated, not to mention the fashion in the musical. I loved the movie so much growing up because of the real life nyc fashion influences, and I feel like that's been completely lost. The musical costume design is a total miss, which is so disappointing for a movie literally set in the fashion world.
@annevanderelst2472 күн бұрын
I feel like the costuming kind of got the era wrong? Like I felt like the fashion looked more 2010’s than 2000’s. For a show about fashion, I agree that they kind of missed the mark on that one

I always thought it was a weird change to have Veronica be the first to climb through the window in the musical. In the movie JD is the one to pursue Veronica, he is the one manipulating her for most of their actions. In "meant to be yours" JD blames Veronica for his actions. Saying she "carved open his heart" and then abandons him when he's too intense for her. And while he's wrong, changing that one detail with the window gives his argument some weight and I think that's interesting to think about

put this video off because I was to watch it yesterday... for my brother's birthday, who dislikes musicals (funny right) and we concluded the story was weak, the singing was good, but I couldn't hear half the lyrics tho so the songs didn't even help the story. i forgot the movie was way more detailed. musicals are meant to add nuance (eg legally blonde) not reduce. defo agree with all your points.

They absolutely didn’t cut Andy’s friends due to “budget restraints on cast members…” this is already a huge cast. The friends would be doubled with some of the ensemble-members; this is JUST a (sadly expected) case of bad-writing, and excluding essential character building, in favor of more time toward generic “pop” music. OH/// and the Vanessa Williams/ Miranda situation is extremely common -- I assume that Williams contract (or at least her agreement) hinged on the fact that her character would have a particular amount of stage time and songs. AND as far as her bow, this is expected. NO ONE would have thought that she was not going to get the last bow -- the last bow generally is going to be given to the person who will get the biggest audience-response, otherwise you will have screams and people leaping to their feet… then when the next person comes on, the entire reception falls - THIS feels bad for the show and the cast. SO, in your high school production the lead character will probably always bow last. On Broadway, it will almost always be the biggest “Star”.

Every commercial musical (aka the thrown/together, corporate-arranged musical MESSes - mostly based on old films these days) are MORE AND MORE like theme-park shows than nuanced theatre about characters and themes … best contained to 20 quick minutes between coasters, than 3 hours.

The movie musical adaptation Miss Honey is my ultimate Miss Honey. I feel like she perfectly represented who Miss Honey was, which is someone mousy and spineless which is what made her standing up for Matilda so meaningful. I also like they had Miss Honey herself ask to keep Matilda instead of Matilda kinda inviting herself like she did in the Devito movie. It was the first time Miss Honey asked anything for herself. I also feel like that version of Matilda's homelife is far worse. They were cruel and absive instead of neglectful and distant scumbags which made her situation feel more dire.

It sounds like the Mean Girls musical and this one suffer from a similar problem: the villain is the most popular character. Because of this, the musical adaptations focus more on developing Regina and Miranda (respectively) and as a result the protagonist’s characterization suffers. Cady is a much weaker character in the musical and was not hyped up in the marketing at all compared to Regina and it sounds like that’s whats happening to Andi here. Pretty sad

I actually kinda dislike 2- it felt like 1 and 3 were pretty relatable in telling actual high school stories. 1 is about not feeling like you can be yourself and then doing that anyway even though you're scared. 3 showcases how fast senior year feels, tension between ppl that you care about and the reality that you have to leave them. 2 really annoys me in the way that the characters are complaining about summer jobs not being fun. Troy gets a bit more flak than he deserves for taking advantage of some opportunities. Yes he should have made more time for his friends but real friends realize that sometimes ppl have commitments that mean they have less time. Just feels like the plot of 2 could be completely undone by Troy offering to split the extra money he was making since it wasn't fair and like 1 good conversation between friends on what's important.

Interesting take! I just love the songs and the vibe of HSM2, and I thought the story was quite relatable because sometimes people get offered more chances in life and that can cause tension in relationships, but I’m willing to admit that I’m a bit biased haha

As always, thank you for a fantastic and comprehensive break down, another great watch. I actually really don't like or sympathise with film Andy. She wants to prove herself in an industry that she doesn't care about and changes herself beyond recognition to do it, damaging her relationship with her boyfriend with infidelity and becoming "too good" to hang out with her friends. I think she's a horrible character regardless of whether she redeems herself or not, but that's just me 🤷🏼♀️

I strongly believe that they mellowed out the Wizard to show two huge things in part 2. 1) to show who might truly be in charge here (through agreement or blackmail) Who manipulated who? 2) all I am going to say for those who do not know, is that to show who the Wizard truly is deep deep down (without knowing it) Side note if they do not flash out that second one in the film I am going to be mad. Super missed opportunity.

I feel like even the movie Devil Wears Prada has some issues about who the villain is and who you root for because it does a good job of seducing Andy, and the audience, into seeing how glamorous and important the fashion world can be, and sometimes it doesn't give a convincing argument as to _why_ it's wrong to want to invest in something like this, like it's the inherently evil choice instead of a lifestyle option. I was one of the many who absolutely DESPISED Andy's boyfriend in the movie, because he I saw him as an unsupportive layabout hypocritical and pridful schlub who hated that Andy was growing beyond him, and instead of doing internal work or approaching it in a way of genuine concern for Andy work-life balance, he was a petulant gaslighting jerk. sometimes you outgrow people, and that's kind of evident with her friends. So I kinda wished the musical supported that critique people have with the movie, And have Andy both square the circle that she has changed, but still be true to herself, get that Journalist job, leave Miranda behind, AND GET SOME BETTER FRIENDS WHO WANT MORE FOR HER!

24:01 I was a big fan of the musical and agree with most of your points, but I have to 100% disagree with your opinion on Defying Gravity. I loved the cutaways to Fiero, Boq, and Nessarose because it gave us a glimpse of the panic Elphaba’s actions have caused throughout Oz. And the way Elphaba fell out the window before finally flying was such a perfect way of interpreting that scene from stage to screen - sure in the context of a musical theatre show it would make sense for Elphie to rise immediately at the high note, but for a film it was such a perfect way to push her over the edge (literally) to own her power despite being truly alone after Glinda refused to come with her. I just loved it ❤

18:06 Is it different on West End? Because on Broadway, a well known actress can get the final bow over the star. And honestly, if anything, Andy and Miranda SHOULD be bowing together. They're both the leads of this - Andy is in the most scenes, Miranda is the titular character. So, yeah, if I were directing this, I would have just had them come out together.
