It’s implied in the wicked books that Elphaba and Glinda were in love but didn’t quite recognize it. Glinda is in awe of Elphaba, I think she refers to her hair as coffee spun into threads, night rain, black silk. There’s major romantic tension and yearning when they meet again after years being apart, and Glinda thinks about Elphaba CONSTANTLY in her old age. I think she thinks of her deceased husband like once lol. It’s implied that Glinda dies in prison and Elphaba comes to her at the end. She says “You wicked thing. You took your own sweet time, of course.” I like to think they were reunited in the afterlife. They do kiss on the mouth lol. All of Elphaba’s descendants are queer too. Her son Liir is bisexual and ends up living with his male partner, and Liir’s daughter Rain is also bisexual and in a relationship with Ozma, the queen of oz. I appreciate that the later books are explicitly gay instead of subtext. The play in general is pretty hetero tho.

Not to mention Frex. He outright tells Elphie that his feelings for Turtle Heart were more than platonic. And it definitely seemed like it was mutual and Frex and Melena and Turtle had a love triangle/throuple thing going on. These books are so confusing at times. It’s only been six months since I read them last and I’ve forgotten a lot already, or half of it didn’t go in to begin with. I also haven’t read the sequel trilogy about Rain yet, so I don’t recall everything you’ve said, but there are definitely a lot of rainbow tones in the series, and I love that. Liir and Trism were so much better than Liir and Candle.

For Six, it definitely depends on the person playing the role. I know Baylie Carson, the previous West End Anne Boleyn, who is queer and Non Binary, said that their portrayal of Boleyn uses She/They pronouns and their costume was designed to include a binder. I think the fact that Six is such an adaptable show, means that each person can customise their queen (or queens) to be however they want to portray them.

I’ve always had a theory that Glinda was a closeted lesbian but Elphaba was straight. Glinda does a lot of performative heterosexuality by immediately going after the most handsome student in school before even talking to him. Then months/a year later she pushes for an engagement, but realizes that she isn’t actually happy despite getting everything she wants (Thank Goodness). Defying Gravity could also be read as her rejection of her true self by remaining behind instead of “being out” like Elphaba chooses to. I just think that it’s a really interesting way to interpret the character without lumping her in as part of an Elphaba/Glinda ship.

Catherine Parr being aromatic has historical prescendent though. (And I mean Parr in this case). She was married twice prior to Henry and had another prospect in Jane Seymour's (Heart of Stone) brother. There is a good article from the Smithsosian about the TV series Firebrand. I think based on how she lived her life, I just have the sneaking suspicion that had marriage not been a forced choice to move forward in her time.... she wouldn't have bothered. Whether that makes her ace or just more a woman of now we'll never know. She'd have definitely bugged the incels..

@@annevanderelst247 Okay, I ended up having way more to say about this then I realized! So I hope this is helpful, lol. I would say the most obvious one I can think of is Matilda reading as autistic, especially with her song “Quiet.” Jeremy from Be More Chill literally putting a microchip in his brain that allows a little voice to tell him how to behave properly in social situations also feels very neurodivergent-coded. And there was originally that lyric in the song Be More Chill from the preview, “Every lame characteristic makes you come off as autistic.” The song “Waving Through a Window” from DEH definitely embodies his anxiety and depression, but it could also easily be read from the perspective of masking and rejection sensitivity for someone with ADHD/autism. “Let it Go” from Frozen reads heavily to me as someone who’s had to mask autistic traits, was never taught any coping skills, and is afraid of their inability to emotionally regulate causing meltdowns where they lose control and hurt, scare, or disappoint people. The imagery of her being curled up helplessly in her room alone, surrounded with ice, as well as how joyous she is when she can be alone and finally let everything out without fear or shame, are both extremely relatable. I think Maria from Sound of Music is very much described like someone with ADHD in the song “Maria.” Mulan’s inventiveness in trying to make her daily tasks more fun is a very relatable ADHD trait. She also is late and has to write things on her arm for the meeting with the match-maker, despite it obviously being extremely important to her. The song “Reflection” literally mentions “wearing a mask” and feeling like she can’t be herself without letting everyone down. Ariel has a hyper-fixation or special interest in the human world and has an entire grotto filled with her collection of objects from it. She’s frequently missing rehearsals, wandering into dangerous situations (like the ship-wreck), and making impulsive decisions (signing a contract without even reading it). A lot of these are relatable to me from an ADHD perspective.

Fucking hell Tugger sings an entire song about how cool Misto is, and the original Choreo includes a rainbow ribbon, and several partner-type choreo bits, including Tugger taking off Misto's jacket at one point (Also you can't tell me that Misto throwing a rainbow ribbon and then Linking arms with Tugger to skip over said Ribbon isn't queer as fuck). The Broadway revival choreo also includes a rainbow, with Misto's light up jacket, and if we go to the Revival version of Tugger's number, whilst Tugger indulges other cats in their fangirling, he actively pursues and initiates stuff with Misto, pulling him into the center of the stage for a partner dance in the middle of the number.

The plot of Cabaret would make more sende if Cliff was a closeted lesbian woman, and that she and Sally came out together. 1) The slightly homophobic subplot about Victor and Bobby, would be less problematic. 2) It would make more sense that Sally only slept with men to get jobs and finally found a girl she liked. 3) It would be cool if Ernst Ludwig was flirting with her and simping, and that she was always friend zoning him, and especially rejecting him after she finds his political viewpoints. 4) Her personal fear of the nazis, and wish to leave Berlin, would get a stronger aspect and the plot would generally become more emotional.

Their personalities of intense homophobia, sexualization of the Heathers and Veronica, and etc could be a front as they’re very stereotypical. I think in the books, Glinda is more lesbian coded as opposed to bisexual. (I haven't fully read them and have only read excerps so maybe I could be missing some context) But Glinda is stated to only seek money and titles from guys and doesn't care to have sex with her husband. She marries for status not love. In the books she also never likes Fiyero (though that's cuz he's dark skinned in the books. I think when Elphaba mentions him Glinda responds that he's 'too dark'). She's supposedly into a guy named Averic who fits her status ideals but it seems there isn't really any attraction. But there isn't any love triangle in the books since they persue different men. It reads as comphet on Glinda's part. Glinda goes on tangents in her mind about Elphaba's hair and in her old age the only thing she remembers about their trip to the Emerald city is that they shared a bed. She thinks about them sharing a bed a lot. She thinks about Elphie making her giddy and such. She finds Elphie beautiful and does not think about any of the men she supposedly likes even a quarter as much as she obsesses over Elphaba. Elphaba can be read as bisexual and possibly intersex in the books. It can be read that Glinda is pretty much madly in love with Elphaba and that while Elphie likes Glinda (she kisses her goodbye on the lips and calls her 'my sweet'), she is much more into Fiyero. Like she loves Fiyero a lot.

@@annevanderelst247 I heard they're a tough read though. Sometimes on the gruesome side, other times quite bleak and the author writes sort like those old British authors so it can be hard to follow at times. You may like it and many ppl love it but lots of ppl aren't too keen on it. But I've read a bunch of excerpts, mainly about Glinda as the romance is more on her side. The writing in them seems quite good. But having the full context would be better lol. Though the story is a lot less about the two of them than the musical is. It's more about Elphaba. But the parts pertaining to them are quite interesting. When they part ways in the Emerald city, after Elphaba kisses her, Glinda cries a lot and notes that Elphie was not crying. So it feels that though Elphaba clearly loves Glinda a lot (I've read paragraphs of her being protective of Glinda etc ), in a romantic sense Glinda was way more smitten. But in the last book (not sure how many books are in the series, also Glinda is more of a side character in the sequels which follow Elphie's kid) it's alluded that they escape together. Elphaba breaks Glinda out of prison but like it doesn't explicitly say it was her. The author has cheekily confirmed that they're endgame but it's up to interpretation really. If you do read the book, or the series I hope you enjoy it.

I definitely don't see SIX as queer coded nor a queer story (whoever said that needs to be smacked with a dictionary) especially that these characters are based off of actual living people - Catherine of Aragon was married to Henry and genuinely loved him, Anne Boleyn had several male love interests, Jane Seymour also in a relationship with Henry, with Katherine Howard we have to exclude Mannox, Dereham and Henry as these were not consensual, but they really cared for each other with Thomas, Catherine Parr was married 4 times and the fourth she married a man for love. With Anne of Cleves it may be a bit complicated, because she in fact hadn't remarried, but that may be of other causes such as language barrier and being simply too afraid to marry again, after all she had a good deal with Henry

@@annevanderelst247 as you said, there are no indications whatsoever

I mean, it's true that there's no indication, but we shouldn't dismiss it solely on the grounds that they loved men. Bi people exist. This doesn't mean that any of the queens were bi, but someone being in straight relationships and genuinely loving the other person doesn't automatically mean they're not queer. I do agree that Six isn't a queer story, not for that reason, but because the point of the show is that their relationships don't define them (particularly as a feminist statement about how history only remembers them for the man they married regardless of their own lives and contributions).

Evan is actually either bi or pan like Connor. One of the creators of the show has said that if Connor had lived he and Evan would have ended up together.

@@annevanderelst247 The way Evan describes Connor in the book is also kinda done in a romantic way. "...he disappears behind a dark shroud. Passing between us is the mysterious creature known as Connor Murphy." "His eyes-what little I can see of them through his overgrown hair-are two steely blue death rays." "...Connor seems like he's way older than me, like I'm a kid and he's a man." He's pretty much describing him as tall dark and handsome and is saying "I'm a boy and he's a man."
