I agree that Defying gravity was a little too long but at the same time I'm happy they showed everyone's reactions especially Fiyero's. Him hoping on a horse at the end to immediately start looking for her reminded me that oh yeah, he joins the guards in the second movie to also look for Elphaba, so I liked that. And I feel like for Boq, it might help drive home that moment in the musical when he became the Tin man and ran a smear campaign against Elphaba and Nessa.

I actually thought Elphaba falling after her first jump in Defying Gravity was a perfect contrast of what magic she does in a panicked/heightened state vs her struggling to summon her magic at will. She needed that extra build up to really settle into her power. Her seeing her younger self is cliche as hell, sure, but it added so much more emotional depth for me. The length of the whole scene was also perfectly cinematic, I think, compared to the stage version the whole number felt too quick. + Seeing her actually fly in the movie hit so much harder than the cherrypickers ever did, I didn't realise why they called it "no-fly shows" or why the song was called Defying Gravity until I saw the movie

Notes 0:22 That's actually how the original opening was, the musical started with a giant hat right in the middle of the stage and some monkey going crazy besides it, then it disappeared into the ground and the munchkins got on stage, they changed it really early on tho 1:51 yk whats weird, in a featurette they even revealed who was gonna do the whole "exactly how dead is she" bit, i guess they decided to cut that bit off but they definitely recorded that 3:13 idk if you found that information somewhere but yesn't. Elphaba does have a nanny (which is one of my fav characters from the novel (i'm weird)) but she isnt an Animal, also, she, like the movie version, is the only person who raised elphaba who wasn't entirely thrown off about her "verdigris", although she wasnt nearly as much accepting of it as dulcibear, she didnt completely despise it like frex nor secretely wish elfie died, like melena. 20:40 Winnie Holzman (the woman who wrote the book/story of the musical) also had a quick cameo! she was the one who said "he can read it, he must be a wizard"! 21:26 i always thought this line indicated there being an affair between the two, i'm probably way off tho lmafo 22:42 DAMN i did NOT notice that, nice catch!

I agreed with that person who said the bears inclusion felt like it made elphabas allyship with the animals less strong is true. In the stage musical she has empathy for them because she can understand how marginalisation hurts. Something we can all feel and understand. But in the movie they make it more like "the help" and her connection is that animals are kind and good. And that shouldn't be a reason for you to stand up for people. This is because not all animals will be kind and good, and an authoritarian regime or one on one experiences can let you see not all animals are good. Therefore if goodness denotes the power someone (elphabas/animals) should have iin Oz, it is easier to remove their rights. In the stage version is easier for us to see that empathy for others allows us to understand others struggles without having to know or have connections with them. Therefore it is harder too other a group as bad because we can project how we would feel in their situation.

Great review. i agree with a lot of what you said. i hope the wizard is more menacing in the 2nd movie. Also, I agree about the younger Elphaba. I think it’s okay, but no one would miss it if it was cut; however, in the movie she actually flies, so either way her falling made it possible for the dramatic moment when she flies above them and begins the climax. Now: i completely disagree with you on showing the friends at the end. She spent 3/4 of the movie developing friendships that she’s never had before. The last time they saw her, the girls “happily” get on the train. When Morrible makes the countrywide announcement, it would have been an artistic failure not to get their reaction of immense shock, confusion, concern, and anger. It amplified the severity of the moment and made her rebellion deeper than just anger at the wizard. And hints at future consequences.

I would like to disagree only on the point about the scene with Madame training her with the coin. When I watched the show, it was kinda jarring to me when a lot of plot points invokved the fact Elpheba was studying under Madame Morribel, and yet we don't get a single scene to know how their lessons together are like, so it was a needed addition in my opinion

Ariana played Ga/linda SOOOO good! She brought the energy, and her signature sass and up-ed it by 1000x. Popular, and no one mourns the wicked are still my favorite parts of the movie, even though they're pretty early on

@Reeine
@Reeine 29 күн бұрын
@ True, since sometimes the colours seem all over the place, it can get disorienting. Especially if you wear glasses like I do. Its feel like people just misinterpreted the colours as just bad production, but they make sense. In 'No One Mourns The Wicked', the colors seem more lighter? maybe except for the fire since the fire is literally burning Elphaba, just to emphasize the feelings of Glinda, gloomy but burning with mourning.

I agree with all your thoughts (especially the extra jump lol) except the tutoring scene with Elphaba and Morrible - the anger bit was maybe a bit overplayed but I think including the scene did help a bit with the pacing, which is absolutely lightning fast in the first act of the stage show where we never even see Morrible tutoring Elphaba.

I think the closeups at the end were necessary because the film is split into two parts. It gives viewers who haven't seen the musical suspense and stakes thinking "what will they all do now that they know Elphaba is evil" and it makes the audience want to tune in for part two. The secondary characters also weren't on screen for a good amount of the finale, so its a good reminder that they exist in this world and are hearing the announcement just like everyone else.

about defying gravity: Elphaba just started using her magic for a purpose and truly does not know if the broom will fly. it wouldn't make sense for her to immediately know how to navigate it perfectly. she just had a moment of realization that Morrible, the Wizard, AND Galinda were not there for her like she thought and she is actually all on her own just like she has always been. I think she takes the jump and as she is falling she almost gives up on herself and is ready to hit the ground, but the reflection of her childhood self reminds her that nobody being there for her has never stopped her before so she grabs the broom and takes on her full power. Its a visual representation of strength in such a sentimental way.

For me, the falling scene with her younger self turned up the waterworks even higher. I saw it for the second time this evening with a friend I took for his first time. I know it was obvious because that was the moment he put his hand on my shoulder to comfort me. That’s the magic of art I suppose - something can have completely different impacts on different people. 🙂 I always say the best films can make me sad cry and happy cry and bittersweet in between. The addition of this bittersweet moment in between added to the range of emotions in the song. Sometimes if you feel the same emotion for too long , the intensity decreases. By shifting the emotion for a moment, you get to feel that prior emotion freshly anew, providing another chemical release in the body. While I appreciate that some folks may not be as emotionally (or chemically?) attuned in that way, for me it was a beautiful addition. Both times! 🙂

My singular complaint really is defying gravity, but calling it "too long" is a bit too broad a way to describe my particular problems with it. I dont mind the song itself being extended to fit the specific actors and medium, i instead have a problem with how much they cut up the song to put in momentum killing action segments. The soundtrack version is comparable to the stage version, but loses the connective impact of tying the memory of how the scene was performed with the song. The stage version cuts it up slightly, but the breaks are never more than a minute, and are limited to 3 at most. The movie? it felt like there were a good 5+ breaks, each anywhere between 3-5 minutes. MAYBE an extended break works after the blame game, but the moment elphaba finds the resolve to commit to the plan ("id sooner buy defying gravity"), the song really cant stop if it wants to land properly. The ensemble can try and fail to sing over her, but they cant stop the building momentum. The movie disregards that key element of the momentum and fully stops the song to add in cinematography-based momentum at the expense of the vocal momentum that makes the song such an impactful moment. If i was to keep the idea of the movie's staging but make the song itself flow better, i would have them play the blame game, cut the song as the pursuers break in, the duo starts retreating up the stairs as elphy resumes the song, and if we must keep the balloon, split up elphaba who keeps running and glinda who tries to take the balloon and inverse the train station scene with elphy trying to hop aboard as the guards pop the balloon, again, all while elphaba continues into the verse of "sooner buy defying gravity" (instead of completely cutting the song, probably as she tries to leap to match glinda), where the duo now rolls out on the upper floor with the balloon popped. As elphaba makes the offer to come with, glinda has pretty much already made up her mind and grabs a robe for elphy, before the pursuers again get between them. Elphy makes the jump across, glinda wraps the robe around her, shaking her head "no, i cant come", where the blame game comes back as well wishes. Again, at no point has the song itself ended up to this point (besides the end of the blame game), but with the pursuers closing in, she has to jump out the window as the music finally cuts for the second time. Shorten the resolve of meeting with her reflection of the past (less waiting, more reflection of the past encouraging her and being the one to actively reach out). Broom materializes as the reflection touches, elphy flies up to meet her pursuers, final verse ("no wizard who ever is or was"), battle cry. Realistically, the balloon is entirely unnecessary outside of the symbolism of the ideal of the wizard being shattered, and the action scene involving it can be cut entirely to keep the song's momentum; heck, if they keep the same beats as the stage version, the balloon still needs to remain in tact for the epilogue (though there is time to repair it as act 2 rushes through a few years of time that the movie has the chance to more properly explore). Finally, move the speech about the "wicked" witch elphaba to the moments after the battle cry, as the song winds down and elphaba flies away. Intersperse the monologue with the reaction of the important characters (and maybe a few minor ones just to expand the scope of the world and throw off any theories the casual audience has about what characters remain relevant in part 2) and their reaction to the news of the rise of the "wicked" witch.

The Wizard is NOT the film's main antagonist. Madame Morrible is. The Wizard isn't evil. Both stage and film. He is the villain in the book though.

Ok, that makes sense! But he’s a bit evil though seeing he’s in on the plan against the animals? Or has he been brainwashed by Madame Morrible?

@annevanderelst247 Morrible is manipulating him. Yes, he wants to fool everyone, but he doesn't want any harm. Morrible is the real evil one. She doesn't care what harm is done.

Also a problem I had with the movie is that whenever Cynthia and Ariana Grande are harmonizing, they sound kind of weird and I don't think it's because of them sucking and singing because They are not bad singers. They are the opposite. I feel like the problem is just that they put Auto tune over their voices when they harmonize and loathing, and it sounds so weird and I don't like it I also don't like how in the musical it feels like they wait too long to sing their parts It's only a problem. on some parts in loathing and some parts in dancing through life. Every other song that's not a problem. It's only a problem in here I feel like that my app just been like in early production problem that they couldn't fix Because every other song doesn't really have them waiting too long to, you know, sing the part they're meant to sing So I feel like it's just like an early production problem and they weren't Able to fix so I'm not. mad about it. I just find it a bit weird And also, I got a shout out. How cool the scene is when like Alphabet says the lyric. If it would be alright by you if I were to DE greenify You with like the wind chimes and the stained glass and all of like the stained glass wind chimes like, you know, going over Cynthia to make it look like for skin colors and normal color instead of being green That is so cool and I love it Chef's kiss amazing. Thank you. Whoever directed that scene I love that so much

@@Mandy-bv5tnI feel like as I've listened to this the musical movie version of what is this feeling it's grown on me I don't hate the harmonizing as much anymore it's just that I feel like I wasn't really ready to accept it cuz it was different from the original so am I had while I was watching movie of your thoughts it sounded bad when they harmonized and I mean it doesn't sound bad when I just wish that you could hear their anger wait not anger I wish you could hear their annoyance in their voices as they sing loathing because this song is about these two girls loving each other and absolutely being annoyed with each other so I wish that we could hear their annoyance and their voices but the song is still pretty good I just had a few problems with it that well they haven't gone away it's grown on me and I've learned to accept it and love it for what it is at least it's not the crap that mean girls was

@@DerenWearsPradaActually the tradition is for new Elphaba’s to change the battle cry just a bit to make it their own in some way. It would have been wholly inappropriate for Erivo to copy Idina’s signature, just because it’s the one on the original cast recording.

This is a great video that not only shows many of the cries from different performers, but also, each one has at least 2-4 different documented cries. And those are the ones the video editor was able to find that had been documented on film. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nn6reYuwfL52rbMsi=FVRvwGhyuButs6jD.

Yeah, me too. Girl. Like, what the hell? Why was there, like, on mountain rushmore statue of the Wizard of Oz? Like what? The mural covering up the original mural of the animals makes sense But then the Mount Rushmore statue of the wizard makes no sense. Like I get it. Everyone thinks he's like that best person in the world, but like This feels Weird because, like, it's literally just in One of the stairways in shiz So it makes no sense to be there, like if there was a mountain and then he had a Mount Rushmore statue with face, it would make some sense. It's still weird and I still don't get it, but it would make more sense than this The Mount Rushmore statue of the Wizards face just randomly being here. Like what

I disagree about Defying Gravity completely. Every part was needed. Nothing was unnecessary. It's wild to me that everyone praised the film for extending and taking time with nearly every other part of the film......except its most iconic number. Seriously.

That’s fair! Maybe the fact that the song came at the end of an already quite long film added to my perception of it needing to be a bit more snappy 🤷🏼‍♀️ It still made me cry though, so clearly they did something right 😄
