Is there any lore on coinage in Westeros? I feel like there's a mint in Oldtown but idk if it was the only one. My guess is the Coins on the banner means the Paynes were minters

Brienne's paternal grandfather was son of Lord (Boros?) of Tarth and Princess Rhea Targaryen, but rumor has it Rhea was knocked up by her brother, Sir Duncan Targaryen, which would make Brienne 1/4 Targaryen

In her first chapter in the books (and in the show they also reference it) they (Illyrio and Viscerys) repeatedly say she looks like a princess. Like a princess, as in not actually a princess? I want to know if abyone else caught this, and if so, what did you make of it? It's stated repeatedly as if it's important.

I think Ashara Dayne and Howland Reed got together (Howland was sharing a tent with Ned). She didn't have a miscarriage or commit suicide. She escaped to the Neck with Howland and had Meera, then Jojen later. Since she was fighting for Team Targaryen, Robert might have sought to punish her after the war. Ned went to Starfall to return Dawn, perhaps Ashara was at the Tower of Joy and came with them. He kept their secret, which is why the Daynes named Eddark Storm after Ned. If Ned had knocked up Ashara and it led to her committing suicide, then it wouldn't make sense.

Where exactly did Gary Gygax have Scottish dwarves? You assert that he invented the trope but offer exactly zero evidence or citations. I say this because I do not remember ever seeing Scottish dwarves in any D&D book. My understanding -- which I'm not saying is correct, but it's my understanding -- was that it was first invented for the Warcraft games.

Hi Paul, thanks for the feedback! It's been a while since I worked on this video, but the sources I looked at are all linked in the video info (click the "...more" to see all the links). The Gygax connection was specifically mentioned in the two forum links I shared there - forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?577636-Origin-of-the-quot-Scottish-Dwarf-quot-trope&s=44e1cc91ea95f53bc691786c9c8ebf9a and www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/1yn4xb/when_did_dwarves_become_scottish/ Users indicated that Gygax was a fan of a certain fantasy author named Poul Anderson, who featured scottish-esque dwarves in his work (from the 1950s). One of the forum users also seems to indicate that the trope was already popularized by the time the Warcraft games were released. My earliest memory of the "scottish dwarves" comes from Warcraft II so that was also my original impression.

I know im 8 years late but i just got to say nice video. To me it feels like they split nordic culture into 3 parts in game of thrones. The wildlings feel more of a nordic culture while Ironborn took the viking and seafarers and raiding part and the northerners like the starks and other houses are just. Well that part i dont know yet. So i guess its more of two parts.

0:44 Small nitpick, but TWOIAF says that the Frey's rose to prominence about 600 years ago when a petty Lord started building the Twins, so even though they one of the younger major houses, I think it's very likely that they're over 600 years old. Just as minor nobility.

my theory is that valyrians are “fire others” or are at least on the path to that (with the red priest moqorro and victarions red hand being the endpoint for the fire other transformation). i think that the others could be connected to the great empire of the dawn in a similar way to how valyria is connected to TGEOTD

I’m not sure where the best place to report this would be but wanted to at least report it. During our vacation this past week from July 22 to July 29 my son and his mother reported seeing a strange creature in the water. They said it had a oval body black and grey with green or teal spots. with small flippers for arms and feet similar to a seal, spikes on its back like a dinosaur, a decently long tail with spikes at the end if it. Have a head like a serpent with a long neck. They said it was decently huge about the length of my sons arm from shoulder to tip of fingers which is about 29 to 30 inches. they spotted it going under they’re dock at the cottage we stayed at off of west bay road. My son originally noticed it, then got his mothers attention which is when she saw it roll its back across the surface of the water to dive deeper. When my son noticed it, it just floating close enough to the surface to see it in detail. That’s when it swam under the dock and dove deeper. My son also said it bobbed its head left to right when it swam. My son put his lure in front if it to try to get it to bite it wanted nothing to do with it. We’ve been going here for years and never had a sighting or a time where my kids or wife had a experience like this so it was interesting to hear about it when they told me about it. Not sure what day it was on but my wife said it was sometime between 3 to 6 pm I heard about this after the vacation. I’ve been going to Fairhaven my entire life and never seen anything of the sort but my wife made it clear she was scared of it and wanted nothing to do with it. The sighting was about a min. long. It was a clear day sunny with clouds. Thank you for you time sorry if this is the wrong place for this just thought it should be noted somewhere.

Just a shot in the dark, but could it have been a snapping turtle? They definitely have spiky dino-backs and tails, and their necks can stretch a lot longer than most people realize. They have a typically reptile gait (swaying side to side) and swim in the same fashion, with flipper-like webbed feet. The colour and size sound about right too. Maybe not as cool as a lake serpent, but still a nifty sighting! I've passed a few big snappers in close proximity, and they're always a bit awe-inspiring.

Well the only difference is that the Valyrian’s are albino humans purple eyes who control dragons and live in volcanic areas while the white walkers are a sentient race of humanoid ice demons made by the great other through the children of the forest by manipulating them

It's honestly fascinating to have a Israeli/Semitic dwarf in fantasy, and specially the precedent of having it directly from Tolkien's hands. It'd be a great changer from the classic trope to have those cultures being represented with more frequency, like having spiritualistic tibetan elf's, Israeli dwarfs, classic greek inspired gnomes or some sort of sea faring islander hobbit.
