We have 2 minu Australian Shepherds. One is a black tri and she'll be 2 April 30th... a year later (last summer) we got a 2nd mini from the same place and our 1st minis mom has the same dad as our newest mini who turns 1 on May 6th. He's a blue Merles. Our girl is so chill and just happy go lucky! So smart! Our 2nd is full of anxiety, whiny, a bit food aggressive, etc. Hes my dream color, but can be such a handful! Still trying to learn the best ways to help him with his behaviors.

We found out our Aussie had separation anxiety when we went out of town and took them to a friends house to take care of him, he would start chewing his fur. Had to give him a Benadryl a day while we were gone. A friend was watching him, he started barking at 4 am. She told us and we figured out my husband on nite shift gave him a piece of cheese when he got home from work, had to stop that!! LOL The best dog either of us had ever had. RIP Blue!

After having 2 Border Collies for 17 years we lost them both within 3 weeks of each other ( female first and male just gave up it was really tough to watch) We decided that we'd get an Aussie. Border Collies live to make you happy, Aussies like to make themselves happy, if it also makes you happy great, if not Loki doesn't care. I work 100% remote and he was a COVID puppy and he's definitely my dog, i am his person without a doubt. I cannot walk into or out of a room alone. As crazy as he can make me, I don't know what I'd do without him around. Our Cat, Phil, might not feel the same but he stays on his toes.

Ive had 2 Aussies and though both have gone through phases, once they grow up a bit they are super chill. Dr. Bruce "Banner" is my current and ever since he turned 3 he has been the best and just hangs out now. Anyone going through the crazy phase, stay patient and they will get through it and come out calm on the other side!

I‘m living in a rural area but we don‘t have this large numbers of sheep or other animals like there are in the US. In the big herds there are, maybe, appr. 200 sheep. Here they don‘t use border collies very often, more breeds like „pastore del Lagorai“ or some mixed shepherd breeds. I‘ve not seen many collies but of 10 collies I‘ve known at least 8 had their problems like aggressivity, biting, and so on. Probably because of the lack of socialization. And maybe I‘m prone to see many problematic collies because of the work in animal protection 😅 but like I said, here at least in the area where I live, the people have more mixed breeds or other types of shepherd dogs, maybe because of the location which is in the middle of the Alps. Plus, if there is a live stock that has to be alone much time there always are at least 2-3 protection dogs, often the „maremmano abbruzzese“. But yeah, even breeds like collies or aussies with nearly no potential of aggressivity, they could be aggressiv if we take a look on the breeding history. Even if collies typically don‘t have to be in direct physical contact with the animals they sometimes do it. And aussies too while herding. And this is why, for example, some aussies sometimes have the problem of nibbing running in front of them. If socialized poorly or not meeting their needs this could lead to frustration and aggressivity. The problem is that both, a border collie and aussie, are highly intelligent dogs, the learn very fast (I tried to learn my aussie a little bit of mantrailing. I gave her 10 minutes of training one day, the next day she unterstoodnwhat to do). But they learn shi*** behaviour quite as fast. Aaaand sometimes correcting this behaviour the are verry stubborn. And if there are people that choose the dog only for the looks, because a aussie is a veeery beautiful doggy, then it gets difficult. I think like you when you said that this kind of dogs belong only on farms or at least in a rural area. Not in a city but there are exceptions if they help people like assistant dogs. But then they‘ll be mentally stimulated.

The best introduction of Shiba I have encountered so far. My 2 years boy black Mameshiba is now quietly wondering through our house from my son’s room to my bedside to my wife’s couch at dawn and being settled at foot of my wife. I don’t train him, he trained me. He rarely barks. He stares when I eat. He sticks his nose out from small space down below the security wall of balcony to look around all day. He loves to be petted by my right foot on his back. We walk twice a day come rain or come storm or snow. He is my everything.

Comments 80 Add a comment... @paulmentzer7658 0 seconds ago The Basque were hired as sherperds buy purchased local dogs. There is some evidence Aussies have been in the American west since the 1500s (reported by First Americans as the dogs they adopted when first America's adopted sheep in the 1500s) This is complicated by the fact a lot of the DNA in Aussies are German. Germany liked England had a law that taxed animals with tails (this was to exclude pigs and sheep). Some breeders then developed "Tax free" horses and dogs by breeding for naturally docked tails. It is from these dogs the tailess nature of the Aussies developed. These two set of ancestors came together in and around Montana. Montana has long cold winters, where the double coats of Aussie and short ears permit them to operate even as low as -40 degrees (Please note -40 is the same on Fahrenheit and Celsius scales). Yes, Australia Shepherds are terrible dogs for Australia. The double coat and short ears are cold weather features. Given the temperature in Australia the Australia Sheepdog has a single thin coat and huge ears to release heat from they bodies doing hot temperatures. The Australian Sheepdog is a much better dog for Australia, but the Australia's Shepherd is a much better dog for most of the US with its generally much colder temperatures.

Australian Sheepdogs are a much better dog for Australia. The Australia's Shepherd is better in Canada and the American North given its thick double coats and short ears. Then why are Australia Shepherd s called Australia Shepherds? The answer is, when the American west changed from cattle to sheep starting in the 1880s, it was the dog to get to herd the sheep imported from Australia in the cold areas of the west. In effect the dog was named after the sheep they were to herd and the sheep was from Australia. Yes, Australia Shepherds were named after the sheep they herded, not Australia.

Crazy and weird… My Great Pyrenees Aussie mix… definitely got her puppy demon child alternate persona from her Aussie mother…😂 Now at two years old, she still shows her wild child side, in a much more subdued manner… given the chance and a little encouragement 😂 Being the runt of the litter, she needed to be more resourceful to survive… competing with her much larger siblings… I think this helped develop her demon child character and determination 🎉 Once, home… she soon caught up with her normal growth curve… I never have learned where all my socks disappear to… First year and a half… grew up patrolling the mountainside around home… being much more the smaller Great Pyrenees guardian in looks and temperament, with a twist 😂 Her Aussie side makes for her wanting to work and learn with a human… Her Great Pyramid side… makes for her pausing to think about things on her own… and then to comply… maybe, eventually, hopefully 😂

I have had two shibas now, and absolutely adore this breed. Yes, they can be stubborn, but the loyalty and love they give you makes up for it 1000 fold. Without hyperbolizing or sounding melodramatic, I would absolutely, positively, unequivocally take a bullet for my Shiba’s, because the idea of loosing them just shatters my heart - when I lost the first one, the mental pain, anguish, and overwhelming sorrow was so unbelievably great - that is how much they have imprinted on my heart. Even when I am most irritated and frustrated with my little guy, I can’t stay angry with him long. I become very sad and even cry when I’m away from him too long. His presence in my life so invaluable and adds so much joy and light into my life. To me, my Shiba is truly a priceless gift from god.

I have 2, nothing like cats. Nothing like cats at all. One of mine thinks he's the joker, trickster, the gotcha man! I know he's up to no good because his eyes are sparkling thinking about how he's shocked me. I know. The breeder said always keep them on a leash unless they are in a paddock or your secure garden. This is true. They are the naughtiest kids in the school, but you can enjoy their mischief, as you don't have to worry about them growing up and getting a job! One groomer barred one of mine, because she screamed throughout the entire groom and people were going into her shop to see what she was doing to the dogs. She was not happy, the groomer that is.

I have autism and severe depression, Back in 2021 I was volunteering in a dog training group who also does adoptions, I found this female Aussie named Raven, who was only 2 at the time but went through 4 owners because they didn’t know how to handle her excess energy, she and I were attached to the hip on day one, so I decided to adopt here and the rest was history, now she’s spoiled, loves watching tv(on her terms) and is the most loving dog I ever owned. The key is to exercise her everyday, luckily I go on hikes and stuff and she loves it. She also comforts me when I get overstimulated or have an anxiety attack, I could not have asked for a better friend.

We have 2, 4 month old Sheebs. OH MY GOD, are my hands full. Talk about stubborn, and training is going so slow, but they are so smart. They learned the word"come" in 15 minutes. Next we try a bath. should be lots of fun. I may just hire a groomer. That scream is not for the faint hearted. I bet the neighbors think we are beating them, or something. We love them so much. they are half brother and sister.
