Have used your footage to learn how to jibe one thing that happens 80% of the time my wing leash raps around my elbow think this happens to you I can not work it out hate leashes . I have a north wing with the wrist leash that comes with it , I would like to stay with the wrist leash any ideas . I have seen the wind blowing the leash slack mid turn do I hold my spare arm down to the last minute ! .
@wingmanfoilclub12 күн бұрын
Im a big fan of a long waist leash. Not only does it stay out of the way and allow maneuvers like the behind the back tack and jibe, but it frees up both arms for paddling out in shore break or onshore wind. It also keeps the wing further away from the board when you let go of it. When I use a board leash o use the North calf leash to keep them separate. But even if you are using a wrist leash, you could try adding a dynema cord extension of a foot or two. That might keep the leash hanging low enough to not get stuck. You should also try different types of leashes (bungee, webbing bungee, and coil) to see which works best. Maybe even the Kaohi invisa-leash. The other thing that might help is a leash with a swivel on it.

Thanks for getting back to me i start off the jibe the windsurf way get downwind were i change to surf way and wing goes above head . I think i then try to turn the board with my ankles not so much body leaning . Most of the time downwind the board wobbles and goes unstable . I have tried to hold my body position for full 180 degrees but 80% of the time the last part is hard to carve . I am lost
@wingmanfoilclub29 күн бұрын
The first thing I would suggest is stop trying to turn 180 degrees. It’s much more difficult to rebalance and find the wind again if you are fully toeside on the complete opposite direction. Instead, end your jibe motion while still heading slightly downwind or on a broad reach. This will allow you to ride more flat to the water. Then you can find the wind again and once you have your balance then carve upwind or switch feet. Also, are you starting your jibe with the front hand facing up? That will allow you to flip the wind and switch hands with no hiccups and makes completing the jibe easier. If you can get someone to take video of you jibing, you can upload it to the WFC forum on the wingmanfoil.com/forum and I will analyze the footage. I offer free online coaching there.

If the stab plays a negative force (down) compared to the front wing (up).... then, a large stab increases lift but does not increase glide... am I right ?
@wingmanfoilclubАй бұрын
The main lifting wing (the front foil) creates a point of upward lift called the center of lift. The weight of the rider and board creates a center of gravity forward of that point. So without a stabilizer, the nose would pitch down due to the center of gravity being in front of the center of lift. In conventional aircraft design, the tail wing is angled down which creates an opposing downward force to the center of lift and pushes the nose up. So it doesn’t increase lift, it counteracts the downward force created by the center of gravity being in front of the center of lift. It also causes the airplane to ride at a higher angle of attack. So there is now more drag due to the tail and also riding at a higher angle of attack. The added drag will reduce glide and also top speed and efficiency. The benefit is an increased pitch stability. So no, in conventional design, a larger stab will not increase glide because it is not adding lift, it is opposite the lift and adding drag and increasing the angle of attack adding more drag. So to increase glide you’re better off moving your weight back or foil forward and using less tail of less shim angle. But what if you put your stab on upside down (which I did accidentally the other day)? Now we have a “lifting” tail. As expected, I had to ride with tons of back foot pressure because my center of gravity was now in front of the centers of lift with no counteracting force. Did this increase my glide? I don’t know. It was too hard to ride to really tell. But I doubt it. I might do a video experimenting with this though. There are some aircraft designs with lifting tails such as the Rutan Proteus or XB-70, but things get pretty confusing once you start talking about tandem wings and lifting tails. Disclaimer: I am not an aerospace engineer or even very knowledgeable about physics.

I started doing this wing 'redirection' by accident when gybing really tightly from riding toeside into heelside. It's like holding on to the wing in it's original direction practically until you exit the gybe, then spinning the wing 180 degrees on it's axis.

Absolutely, and I meant to add the following caveat to this video: “You don’t need any of this new junk.” My wings are close-out $250 wings. My board is close-out used $500 years old design. My foils are decent but you don’t see me out there buying the latest and greatest now that I have decent ones. (And I bought some of them used for a deal.) The trend has been to push expensive race gear or the best downwind foil. But this sport was always about fun and people are forgetting that. I have plenty of fun on my old gear and outride quite a few people in the process! I wasn’t even going to make the video this year because of how commercial the sport has become. But people demanded I go.

Super slow mo version at the end. Your front foot comes off the board before the spin. That's what sent you to the rail instead of the center line. Seems like you gotta really keep your front toe down for the entire spin to maintain your position on the board. Otherwise the foil just shoots ahead of you. So close!
@wingmanfoilclub3 ай бұрын
The funny thing is even though that one looks bad it felt great. I was almost able to pull it out. I think it might help to start with the front foot more heelside to make room for the next foot placement

@wingmanfoilclub3 ай бұрын
If you’re a beginner I still believe the most beneficial setup is a traditional 120L board, 6-7m good hand wing, and a big foil. Later you can move onto a 90L hybrid board, 5-6m wing, and higher efficiency foil, but trying to learn on that gear will absolutely be no fun and delay your progress unless you have a serious Windsports background. Also traditional learning gear can be found cheap on the used market

It links to a video with Josh from The Foil Shop and then below it in the replies I’ve written a MASSIVE dissertation on beginner boards, wings, and foils. Should answer most of your questions. I launched the How to Wingfoil Series earlier this year and a few other things but they didn’t really catch on, and I even got a few negative nellys in the comments on some of the stuff I did make, so I haven’t been as inclined to make content. Not to mention I think most gear is “good enough” now and I don’t want to just make videos reviewing stuff to sell to people when their foils are fine. We’ll have to reevaluate where we go from here, but know that I really value genuine viewers like yourself! There was a smaller media presence this year and the show itself felt smaller. It could have just been the heat and lack of wind though. Or maybe foiling has hit some growing pains. The winglife guy is a super nice dude and did a great job.
