I shall never forget this tragedy, and the disgust of the action...

The trouble was initiated by Juventus fans. I think pretty much any group of English fans would have reacted the same way. The ground was crumbling and police were hopeless. Liverpool were just unlucky really

Honestly I think Lyle was out of line when he basically called them dumb. But I respect him for standing his ground. Grandma doesn’t get to tell him what to believe in and he should know better than to judge people in their own home. Great scene.
@tennisteuton15 күн бұрын
I don't think Lyle is that intelligent - he doesn't realize how his answer is making the family hosting him uncomfortable. There is a way communicating your thoughts without making people feel stupid. Book intelligence high - social intelligence low.

Going on about mandatory national service (Jimmy Hill) was so unhelpful. What, instructing people in the use of weapons and military tactics will help mitigate violent tendencies? Luckily, we found a more sensible route and hooliganism is 'almost' a thing of the past.
@steve-kl9ivАй бұрын
Hooliganism costs a fortune to police. Without safer grounds and strict policing it would be far worse than it is. Many young people want to cause trouble, so do a fair few older people. They use football to get a buzz, be in their little gang. It's fashionable to look the part in designer gear even if you can't fight your way out of a wet paper bag. They're just idiots
@rodrigofonseca6241Ай бұрын
I like the fact the commentator doesn't whitewashes the fact it were Liverpool so called fans guilty of this tragedy.
@steve-kl9ivАй бұрын
They also blame the police, the lack of segregation, mention how much trouble other English fans have caused over the years and recommend English clubs are banned from Europe. They also say it was a small minority of fans who caused it and that the deaths and injuries weren't caused by actual fighting but by the wall collapsing. Very accurate.

If uefa had done the smart thing and held this final at a stadium like the Bernabeu or camp nou then none of the victims would have sadly passed away and the history of English club football would be so much different I as a liverpool fan do not condone the actions of any of the fans that night or the tragic loss of life to the juventus fans....I was only 6 at the time of this horrific event so was too young to understand what happened but sadly almost 40 years later it is still a tragedy and one of the darkest days in football......R.I P to the victims YNWA

this is sickening to watch, especially when you think of Hillsborough a few years later. English football learned nothing from Heysel. seeing this horror unfold it's actually incredible that the ban wasn't even longer.

Interesting too that it was Souness himself who was Liverpool manager when they were finally readmitted to European competition in 1991.

The crush wasn't a result of the wall collapsing. The Juventus fans running from the Liverpool fans piled up against that wall and that's how the crush occurred. The collapse of the wall actually released the pressure and prevented any further deaths.
@uncontrollable34311 күн бұрын
That’s not technically true. When the wall collapsed, a massive surge of people continued to trample over more and more people in their desperate attempt to breath. A lot of people were trapped but still alive beforehand.
