One of my favourite Walton episodes. In this scene Lyle Thomason, played wonderfully by Dennis Kort, is a college student genius who scandalises the devout Baptist family with his views on religion. Very funny.

You're not alone, Ralph. Between watching the Waltons and Little House On The Prairie repeatedly over the decades, I've been gifted the equivalent of being raised right. It has transformed me. I was raised in an abusive home. I started watching when it first came out. I never get tired of either. I'm 67 now and I still watch them both.

Quite an outstanding scene. An episode set right in the heart of that deeply conservative and religious, god-fearing era. This scene brilliantly captures how such a devout, christian family of that era would likely react to such radically outspoken views at that time. Big fan of this show way back then; so warm and fuzzy, just drew you in.

What he said. LOL!!!! It’s funny when they do a tight 3 shot of Elizabeth, Jim-Bob and Ben it looks like they are a mile away from Michael Learned but when they do a wide shot they are sitting together so closely. Makes you wonder if she was even there when they did the 3 shot of the kids. It must take a lot of time doing these table scenes between the master shot, tight shot & closeups of each character. All that said, that was a great scene. Grandma was beside herself.

@@catradorasprmanager7728 Woody Guthrie was a groundbreaking song lyricist who performed his music while traveling with actor Will Geer to migrant labor camps throughout the United States during the Great Depression. That was the real Great Depression, not the fictionalized Waltons version of it. Woody's health declined in the early 1950s and he could not perform again. I don't know whether Will, in the 1970s, reminisced about Woody. Possibly Richard Thomas listened to Will reminisce. Someone can ask Richard whether that happened. I am speculating on that point, but the association of Will and Woody is a fact.

This is wonderful I didn’t realize the Waltons were so progressive back in 1975 to even touch the subject of atheism let alone make many good arguments for it.
@ronslatter61839 ай бұрын
The episode actually highlighted Lyle's lack of social skills (probably Autistic). I wouldn't say they were attempting to show "good arguments" regarding atheism. Rather, Lyle's inability to "read the crowd" so to speak. John Boy's epilogue: "Lyle Thomason came back to stay with us several more times, and we enjoyed his visits very much. He did indeed prove to be a decent, kind, and very likable human being. But what pleased us even more, was that after that weekend, Lyle spent almost all of his free time visiting his own parents."
