@planemaddean1458 There was a Scene documentary on BBC 2 about a week or two after the Heysel disaster, and it followed Everton fans on their trip to Sittard in Holland in the 1984/85 CWC. The Everton fans behaved well, and the coach load of British blokes from Germany who were in the army and went to the game were the ones looking for trouble and were drunk and acting like idiots. Just goes to show that National Service would have solved nothing.

The beginning to this programme was totally surreal. It went from showing Jimmy Hill sharing a laugh and a joke with Sir Terry Wogan and Bruce Forsyth during the link-up between the two studios, at which point no-one would have thought that anything was wrong in the stadium. After the MOTD intro music had played, the expression on Jimmy Hill's face changed completely as he briefly described the dreadful situation in the stadium and showed pictures of fans being carried away on pieces of fencing and a young fan being attended to by first aid workers on the pitch. I was only 5 at this time but still vividly remember seeing this on TV that night.

Surreal indeed. I was 18 at the time and was anticipating a classic football encounter between two of the greatest clubs in world football. As it transpired, the match itself became known as the most forgetful game in history. A truly tragic night.

This might have been mentioned but I thought Bobby Charlton spoke with great eloquence and passion that night. One of Britians greatest ever talents, only 17 years previously was the shining glory of a wonderful career for him, having been a part of the team that fully supported England's entry into European competition and cruelly witnessing so many of his team mates perish following a European cup game. Yet no hyperbole or talking down other clubs. What a gentleman.

Contributing factors to this disaster include 2 matches prior to this one: 1) 1984 Cup Winners Cup semi final between Juventus and Manchester United in Turin. The United fans went on a rampage after losing the second leg and trashed the city. This would have caused a lot of anger and hatred from the people of Turin. 2) 1984 European Cup Final in Rome between Roma and Liverpool. Here victorious the Liverpool fans were subjected to much violence by the Romans. There was also the Super Cup meeting between Juventus and Liverpool in 1984, which is where some say that a specific rivalry developed between the 2 sets of fans. In the days of poor policing and control of fans within the ground where fans deliberately set out to attack each other it is easy to see how Heysel could have happened. The violence on the terraces of Heysel and the tragic loss of life has to be seen in the context of unacceptable violence in European football at that time. It should also be noted that murderous and uncontrollable violence was not seen in Liverpool's outings in 1977, 1978 or 1981.

Guy Jones I thought at the time how out of character it was for the Liverpool fans to act like that. Apart from a couple of instances of crowd trouble in European club games away from home the main trouble, in fact the worst trouble caused abroad was carried out by followers of the English National team. No doubt that this was the worst thing to happen. It was strange how English club teams were banned from playing in Europe but the English National team weren’t. Was that because it would have stopped the jolly ups of the FA and the politicians abroad??? Hmm...........

The match should not have been televised after what happened. The game had become of no interest to TV viewers. Remember watching all this unfurl. The real blame lies with UFEA president Jacques Georges for choosing Heysel to stage the final. Both Liverpool & Juventus weren't happy to stage it there because the ground was crumbling away through lack of upkeep to make it suitable for major fixtures like this, despite it being seen as Belgium's national stadium, & wanted the game relocated. Georges rejected the request & just said to both clubs his decision to stage it a Heysel was final. Georges should have resigned after the game, after all he did effectively have blood on his hands but didn't. Instead he banned English clubs indeterminately from all European competitions with Liverpool's ban continuing for a further three years after the English club ban was eventually lifted, though that was reduced to just one year. Juventus themselves received a suspended ban. The Belgian FA went further & banned all British clubs from playing European competitions on their soil. Allocation & organisation on the night was also poor. The part of the ground that was reserved for "neutrals" would turn out not so. Belgium had many ex-pat Italians living in the country. A lot of them Juventus supporters. That part of the ground was next to where Liverpool fans were allocated. It was only meant for those with Belgian addresses, but the ex-pats also had Belgian addresses making a mockery of the "neutral" policy. The ex-pat Juventus supporters turned clearly showing who they were supporting with tickets for the "neutral" sector. What the organisers should have done was to escort them to the end allocated for the Juventus fans & only let those certainly showing no obvious allegiance to Juventus into the "neutral" part. All in all a tragic mess.

Afterwards, the Liverpool club, and its supporters made things far worse by trying to wriggle out of any responsibility. @speakfreeley4473
@speakfreeley4473 Жыл бұрын
@@thevillaaston7811 What Liverpool fans did that night I am not condoning. It was indeed a disgrace, but the fact is Heysel was a wreck. Back in 1980 Heysel staged the 'Cup Winners Cup' final between Arsenal & Valencia. While that was remembered purely for the football both sides complained about the stadium falling apart, & between those two fixtures nothing was done to improve the ground. That & bad organisation made matters worse. That section of the ground where the disaster happened was reserved for neutrals, meaning only those with Belgian addresses were allocated to that part. However Italian ex-pats living in Belgium who were also Juventus supporters & made it clear that they were so when arriving but nonetheless were sent to that area by organisers because their tickets said so. Only a flimsy wire segregation fence separated them from the majority who were Liverpool fans & took no time to breach. This was like throwing gunpowder onto a blaze. UFEA certainly must take at least some of the blame for choosing a dilapidated stadium to stage such a major event & they knew about Heysel's shabby condition but chose it anyway.

It was clear, yet they didn't speak a heck of a word. Barrie Davies here mentions Rai, yet he behaved much less hypocritical with the audience and immediately spoke of . 10 minutes into the live coverage he also speaks of . Rai was still silent and would keep it all covered up until other 50 minutes. At least Britain is much better than Italy from this point of view and, mind you, I can tell you a lot about that, having been raised in both countries. Och, I was about to forget to remind you that the whole tragedy was caused by a SIMPLE BRAWL. Just a brawl. People taunting each other, bad words, pushing, shoving and, at last, SOME British fans running towards the Italians... the poor Italians simply WITHDREW and tried to escape, so that a FUCKING WALL went down. That's all. No excuse to anyone, at all, but what about the whole UEFA organisation of this match??? I mean, Heizel Stadium, a wall of SAND and OBSOLETE BRICKS... a wall came down for f.'s sake... and what about putting the Liverpool hoolies ALONGSIDE harmless Italians? Between them, just WIRE MESH FOR HENS. Got it? Luckily, the game was played, otherwise the WHOLE OF THE JUVE ULTRAS on the other side of the end would've STARTED A BRIT-CHASE ALL AROUND BRUSSELS... and let me tell you, Italian ultras are MUCH MORE VIOLENT (and heavily politicised) than any British hoolie crowd, believe me...

In the rest of Europe people were dying in mass: 1982, Spartak - Haarlem at the Lenin Stadium, 66 dead for a stampede, no-one spoke a word about that. Ultras around Europe were twenty times worse than the British hoolies, yet anything had to be swept under the carpet to throw English clubs away from European success. Let's not even talk about that. We were simply more and more naive than the rest of the Europeans, that's why we payed for all the others. Mrs. Thatcher exploited the whole situation and had us banned from Europe, auld bitch. Don't forget an ordinary Lazio fan died out of the blue as a Roma supporter shot a ROCKET from end to end before a derby match, and that was 1979.................... and I'm also a Roma supporter, frankly, as much as I'm a Rangers man (I'm half Scottish). They carried ROCKETS into football grounds. Roma was left-wing, Lazio was right-wing back then, it was all political, the '70s saw daily fights between leftists and fascists in the streets, the climate of that time was this one, people lived locked in their flats to avoid violence. Not to mention Spain under Franco, until 1977. And what about the Inter fans throwing a SCOOTER from the terraces? What about sections and sections of a train on fire arriving at Salerno station because frustrated Salernitana ultras had decided it had to be so? Did the Italians pay for such things? Naw. Listen, mate, Britain's twenty times more civilized and democratic compared to such countries and that's how it was back in 1985 as well.

1985 was without doubt the Darkest year of Association football. Millwall fans riot at Luton town. The Bradford Fire tragedy claiming 56 lives on the same day as the young supporter dies during riots between Birmingham City and Leeds Utd. The Heysel Stadium tragedy. 77 days of grief. 2 months and 16 days during which Footballs name was dragged through the mud.

I wonder if Heysel was chosen as the venue for the final because UEFA was hoping that trouble would take place and English teams could be banned from European competition. Especially with them putting ‘ neutrals ‘ next to the Liverpool fans. They must have had a fair idea that those block Z tickets would mostly end up in the hands of Italian fans which would increase the chance of trouble even more. As that decision with block Z is beyond me. Liverpool should have had all of that end.

From this video, I reckon Liverpool were harshly done by. Yes, a few of their fans charged the supposed neutral block Z full of Juve fans, but there was one fan amongst them with a red England away shirt from that time. I have never seen many Liverpool fans wear England shirts to a football game, so were some of the supporters there fans of other cubs? After all documentaries of this disaster suggest no tickets were being checked, and there were tickets being sold on the secondary market for the final. And the majority of violence is seem from Juve fans, hitting police with stadium debris, long poles, bats. Then sticking up a flag saying "RED ANIMALS". Majority of Liverpool fans at that stadium were stood peacefully in their own terraces, singing songs about their own club. No banner provoking Juve fans. It seems deliberate that there were more police outside the ground, compared to inside. A significant number out there should have been checking tickets, also alot more being deployed between that block Z and Liverpool fans. It's mad to think that there was a neutral stand for a final between two big teams, at a time when hooliganism was rife all across Europe. That stadium is not even fit enough to hold a school sports day let alone a major professional football final. Nevertheless, RIP to those who died.

Football Lover 1973 same with hillsborough. The Liverpool chief executive didn’t want the semi final to be played there. Just as he protested about playing the final at heysel. Arsenal played at heysel in the CWC final in 1980, 5 years previous, and they came back saying what a dump and how derelict it was. 5 years previously!! Yet nobody was listening.
