I find this interesting. My grandfather was the sheet metal union president in KC, Mo back in the 50's. His father also was a sheet metal worker back in St. Joseph, Mo. I was able to get a few ancestry pics of him in the shop probably from the 40's. My dad or I didn't continue in the trade. Semi retired, I'm now playing with automotive sheet metal/ welding. I feel like kind of a throwback to my ancestors.

@BillyLeeWilson it's an honorable and useful trade. I turned out in 83, and I still love it today. I would love to make more folks aware of the fabrication trades. That's why we started this adventure, and it has been a blast. Thanks for hanging out with us. I'll bet our shop doesn't look much different than his.

I wish someone would have put a cross break in the duct work in one of my apartments, because every time the fan goes off it rattles like there is no tomorrow. Is there any after-the-fact fix for that? Keep the good stuff coming. I'll have to check out more of these videos this winter when I'm not rehabbing one of my apartments.

@johnnylightning1491 if you have access to the outside of the duct, you can cut a piece of sheet metal ( or 1/4" plywood) and laminate it by using polyurethane caulking as an adhesive. It doesn't take much to stop the oil can noise. You can also screw a stiffener to the duct. Walk through the hardware store and you can find plenty of sheet metal shapes that will get the job done. Angles, and channels are very useful. Make a spreader from them and you can place them on the inside of the duct if that works better for your application. Let me know what you come up with. Send me a photo [email protected]

Hi Ken, first I wanted to thank you for putting this great informational and motivational content on KZbin for free. Secondly, where is the best place to find sheet metal materials? It is pretty expensive at the big box stores. Thanks in advance!
@kengodfrey1956
@kengodfrey1956 23 күн бұрын
@johnwright972 we buy our material at a large metal supply right here in town. We pay about 60 dollars for a 4 foot x10 foot sheet of 26 gauge galvanized. You could make a lot of great projects from a sheet that size. If you have a metal recycling yard nearby, sometimes they have dented or scratched material for sale. Cut around the bad parts, and Pow! You have a sense of accomplishment . Roofing is a common user of sheet metal, so check out the flashings at the big box store. You can make some cool stuff out of valley flashing. Thanks for hanging out with us, we are glad to have you along. Let me know if these ideas help.

Good video. My only thoughts are to help educate your viewers having worked on Engineering Drawing Standards for 40 years and ASME Standards. Any lines on a drawing are considered 90 degrees UNLESS they are identified otherwise. So just like the other edges where you didn't identify with a symbol, the area you did mark did not need to be either. It is understood unless dimensioned to another angle. And yes I realize this is for a small shop and therefor can be personal. But if sending a drawing to another shop it can be confusing and cost time/money if miss-interpreted.

@@kengodfrey1956 Thank you, we both come from an era I think of knowledge sharing. I sat with representatives from John Deere, Air Force, Army, Mercedes, Rolls Royce, Autocad, Siemens and others with the goal of developing standards so any company can send their drawings to any other company and have it made.
