It's hard for me to understand how people don't know such concepts, I consider them to be common sense and elementary logic. But, for those who don't know, it seems that you are doing an extraordinary job. Honestly, seeing the comments, what you do is really necessary, I repeat to my astonishment.

Mr. Godfrey: I'm trying to catch up on your videos and want to congratulate you on how well you graphed the principles of lever physics, impact pressure, and chip removal of sawing. It reminded me of my wood technology teacher, Mr. Leshwar, who taught us only 37 years ago. congratulations MASTER!!!

@@kengodfrey1956 Mr. Godfrey: Perhaps what I am trying to express is not well understood because since I do not speak your language perfectly, I use Google Translate to write my comments because I would not want to send a message with spelling mistakes. I support your channel because I like how you transmit your knowledge to young people and in an era where technology noticeably replaces manual skills and young people dream more of getting rich in the short term, they are losing jobs and that saddens me a lot. However, for many years now I have not needed to have the physics of a lever or a pulley explained to me or how the tip of a nail concentrates the force of the impact it receives. Please don't take this the wrong way!!! I want to continue enjoying your great videos and I truly admire and respect your work!!! Kind regards.

My career was in electronic repair. I was the 'old guy' on the job after a while and the new guys would often ask me for help in troubleshooting a problem with equipment. They had already spent hours trying to figure it out before asking for help. The FIRST thing I would always do was to look at the schematic diagram with the new guy and figure out HOW and WHY the circuit worked. After understanding the HOW and WHY it was a simple matter to determine the bad components by applying logical cause and effect analysis. I know this isn't sheet metal, but it's a good example of what you are saying. And this as a bonus: I learned from the 'old guys' a long time ago. 99% of troubleshooting is VISUAL. Keep your eyes OPEN! If your eyes are open, so will be your MIND!

Hi Ken, great channel. I love the shark analogy. We're in completely different industries, I'm in IT, but I tell my folks all the time, don't just focus on the steps in completing a process. Focus on why each step is necessary. Then, as you gain an understanding for the whole process, you'll be able to introduce changes to make it better or more efficient without impacting the desired result. I'm looking forward to building the toolbox! Might be a nice gift for my grandchildren. -Mark

Thank you for taking the time to explaining the mechanics of shearing. I was told that you should never punch holes in material that is thicker than the punch diameter. I like your tutorials sir.
@kengodfrey1956
@kengodfrey1956 Жыл бұрын
I've not heard that rule. We normally don't work with material thicker than 1/8th inch. So we don't encounter that situation. My little brother is an ironworker, and he commonly punches 1" holes in 1 1/2 base plates. I prefer the easy to pick up stuff. Thanks for watching.

My learning process always involves wanting to know 'why'. Why? Because relevance helps me to remember. I've never been a good rinse and repeat sort of fellow, if I am prevented from knowing cause and effect, rather how some action relates or applies to another. Great videos!

Ken, I retired 3 years ago from teaching Apprentices in Trade School for HVAC/R and Welding. I totally agree with your thoughts on how important it is to know "why". I really enjoyed your shark analogy, but unfortunately, i probably won"t have the opportunity to "steal" it! LOL I always told them, don't just listen to this old, fat grey haired guy telling you to do something without asking why? I always said, I would do pretty much anything I was asked to (within reason), but I had to know why I was doing it. Great job on these "lessons"!

sawing doesn't just lose the width of the blade, you have to sand / de-burr / smooth the edges. ofc shearing also incurs those loses, but the stretching often mitigates the losses

It doesn't have to be anything expensive. I recall my dad back in the day made shears out of a couple of plowshares pivoted together , one was held in a vise , the other had a handle welded to it

Ken, your videos are awesome! Grandad was a tinsmith, but he passed when dad was a young man, so I never learned from him, though dad still pogo'd a straight ladder along the eavestrough into his 70's..... just like he was still a kid helping his dad! Anyhoo, dad left me some 18 gauge sheet aluminum that I want to cut down to 3/4" strips to use instead of leading in my letterpress: question is, should I try to find a local shop with a big shear to cut it and then file the hawksbill off, or should I use a Dremel with a cutting blade and cut it myself? Will the shear deform the strip, being so thin? I don't mind losing the width of the kerf. I'm going to keep watching your videos, one a day, to keep a smile on my face, a learn a little something new!
@kengodfrey1956
@kengodfrey1956 Жыл бұрын
The shear does put a slight rotation in the piece. But it's clean and fast and you can take the twist out easily. The dremel may be more work due to the heat generated by friction, and aluminum has a tendency to load up the cutting wheel. And then you still must deburr the piece.

HI Ken, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and skills with whomever chooses to take the time to watch, listen and learn! I had a thought as I watched this video and would like to share it with you. When you are talking about fractions and relating it to either pies or pizza, perhaps you should add the word 'equal' to the total number of pieces as the denominator. Bill

Ken, how do I make a DIY break and shear?
@kengodfrey1956
@kengodfrey1956 Жыл бұрын
Great question. The shear requires hardened blades and precise tolerances. I recommend a hand held electric unishear or double cuts. Both of which will be demonstrated in a future lesson. As for the brake, I have seen some good examples on you tube. Cruise through your local Harbor Freight for a hands on look at a working model for ideas or purchase. I applaud your interest in metal working . Go for it.

@@kengodfrey1956 i haven't checked recently, but about 6 years ago i was looking to buy a throatless mountable shear from Harbor Freight and for some strange reason it had limitations about which states it could be shipped to. It made no sense. Too much mafia in those states perhaps. Harbor Freight maybe worried that the shears would be modified to chop off fingers... :) Excellent show you have there. Have you ever done a cameraman episode? Taryll Fixes All shows the cameraman who never dies more than you do, but your instructional layout and camera work are similiar. And by that i mean excellent. i can tell you a funny "horror" story. You making duct a plenum in a video reminded me. 14 year fire protection pipe fitter. Was on a "commmercial" residential (condo) job and the engineer/architect hadn't left enough room for a sprinkler pipe to cross any of the bigger rectangular duct. We were using CPVC so bends were fast and easy, so the agreement everyone came up with, including the duct guys (they were so funny), was that anytime we ran into that big duct taking up all the above ceiling space, we would offset our pipe as low as it could go, and take a big sledge, with both hands under the head, (on a ladder) we would bash a channel under the duct enough to let our pipe pass through, using the top of the sledge head. Beautiful abortions.... Have you ever watched Periscope films? Those black and white instructional films from the 1950's?
