My very first foray into Warhammer was right at the tail end of 5th Edition Warhammer Fantasy with an Empire army. I still have many of the miniatures today, the quality of the painting is best left unsaid.

...Gondor as the Normands and the Vikings ? If you follow the movies' version at least they're very firmly Roman inspired
@qsywastooshort745115 сағат бұрын
also 15th century not 16th, that's when you get landsknechts and armored lancers. Past 1600 you're starting to shift into lines of musket infantry and proper uniforms.

Hi Mr Jordan. I have not been watching your videos lately but I felt the need to view this one. A lovely look into a part of Warhammer we knew and loved, but now understand why the "Old World" had to fall. No one would collect and paint such a vibrant but chaotic mix of models as a beginer. Futuristic space knights sell better, even ones that are Vikings with an affinity for wolves. Thank you for this video.

I'm sad the Engineer on Mechanical Steed didn't make a comeback in The Old World, especially since the Arcane Journal has a whole army list focused on Nuln! Also, just a nugget of heraldic information: I know you didn't mention the first demi-gryph from Forge World with its... anatomical correctness, but that was a nod to the fact that a wingless griffon/gryphon in heraldry is generally referred to as "a male griffon" - a demi-griffon would technically be the top half of a griffon divided at the waist. :)

I prefer the empire of man as the poster faction of WHF to the imperium being the poster faction of 40k. While the empire is a mess in the lore and things are bad there's the vibe that there are heroes who are trying to make a difference even if it's a small one. The imperium is just too messed up that them being the poster factions and having the space marines described as heroes feels narratively dissonant (I say this all as a 40k lover)

It would have been very interesting to see in what way they might have been explored further at the time if things had gone differently! I’m hoping to bring together what we do have in a future video
@stevestrangelove4970Күн бұрын
@@jordansorcery its just, we are seeing the "in-development" of the lore of many of those places, so they feel shallow, BUT also, we see how many have been becoming Empire 2.0, copying what is already in fantasy and not really bringing something new. Which is hard, as real life has become a mess (how are we to expand Kislev with the Russian Ukranian war? or Cathay with the constant geopolitical threats?). We live in complex times, companies want to streamline things for what is already there and creators dont have that love for history and pulp fantasy they used to have.

Hello, beautiful video on the evolution of the empire in Warhammer , my compliments 🔥🔥🔥👏👏🙂👍 But I have to add this: In the setting of "The Lord of the rings" for me, the ispiration for Gondor it's more like the roman empire by the fourth/fifth century a.C. and the first period of the byzantine history. And not normans and vikings. And Rohan it's like the Saxon mixed with the Alans, the Sarmatians or the Goth. 🙂
@jordansorceryКүн бұрын
Very fair point! I almost mentioned the Roman Empire too, but I cut it from the script for some now unknown reason!
@K_E_RobinКүн бұрын
My favorite faction! ❤ I need to mention that I've heard that Gondor is more like Byzantine Empire than anything else, may be wrong but I like that perspective. 😊

You’re quite right, I mentioned the influence of Eastern Roman Empire in an earlier draft, but for some inexplicable reason I didn’t keep it in!

Voltaire's quote was more of a tongue in cheek jab and less of serious historical analysis. The HRE had been holy, in the sense that it was the only Papal sanctioned empire successor to Rome, and for this reason it was Roman too, in the sense of Roman Catholic, and heir to Roman administrative legacy and even its civilizational destiny. And it was an Empire, in the pure sense of its word, imperium, because it had theorical dominion over all Christian kings (imperium means reach of power, in legal Roman terms the power over life and death). But it was not an empire in the more colloquial sense (a conquering, unified, absolute state), it was not Roman or Holy in the eyes of Voltaire because it had lost all influence and power it had had over Europe and even Germany. Voltaire knew all that, unfortunately pop history just passee on his quote without further thought. Most of the "not an Empire" characteristics of the HRE came to be with the Golden Bull in the mid 14th Century, after a period of steep loss if power and prestige of the Imperial crown, mostly due to the Hohenstaufen dynasty neglecting Germany and then losing the crown in different crisis in the late 13th. Before that, the HRE was arguably as centralised (or decentralised) as any other feudal kingdom in Europe. Certainly more than France.

I must admit, I’m no scholar of Voltaire or the HRE so I will have missed some nuance!

Fantastic and original stuff, Jordan. I especially liked your thoughts on the Empire being the default for the setting, but not the starter army in the same way Space Marines are for Warty Thou. I do miss the variety available to The Empire. Especially the Kiskev units and especially the Tzarina and her ice powers.

This was a fantastic video Jordan! Really captivating and fun to watch from beginning to end! I'm an oldhammer type but never played fantasy battle but it was always fun to watch the impressive evolution of the Empire from the sidelines. I secretly always wanted some of those crazy large piece battle vehicles and knights on griffins and the like. Is there going to be a part 2 to this video?

The timeline of the Empire always baffled me. If we assume Sigmar = JC/Arminius in our own timeline (and the Sigmar novels bare this out) then 1IC is roughly equal to our 1AD, give or take a few decades. How, then is reign of Karl Franz II at 2502, when technologically, culturally, they are around our year 1600Ad? How did they stagnate over a thousand years of potential progress?
@CosmoprotoКүн бұрын
There's no guarantee you'll get x amount of progress in y amount of time. It's a different world with different issues and conditions, like armies of monsters constantly attacking and the existence of magic.
