Great video… really useful. Thanks for sharing… I was wondering if there’s a way (of course there’s a way but I didn’t find it out) to set a button in my launch pad to momentarily shift all the pads to different midi channel (from Ch1 to Ch2). When releasing that button all the pads should go back to the original channel. Can you help? Thanks a lot.

Challenge accepted! I think you “note on” as the trigger for a MIDI translation from 1 to 2, then “note off” to end it is probably the way. You could use note on to trigger a translator to be active (with the MIDI code from my video) then note off to inactivate the translator. How does that sound?

Plz help, I cannot get the IAC MIDI channel to trigger the Looper. I can program C1 to start the looper recording, but if the song is playing / I hit space bar it doesn't register that midi note to start the looper. I've copied all the settings you've created and it's just not working for me. On a 2021 MacBook Pro M2 / Ableton 12 - Any help would be much appreciated. It all makes sense and would work great if I could just get this to work.

So sorry to hear that! Can you help me understand how you’re using the space bar? Are you using this to trigger a note? You need a separate MIDI track to play the notes (on channel 1), that trigger the MIDI that starts the looper…

I'm having issues when trying to add a 2nd looper. I have the first looper is setup like a stomp pedal looper where it sets the tempo based on the loop just and that works fine. Now I want to add a second looper and I want it to start recording when the loop come back around and stop when I tell it to stop. This doesnt seem possible? It doesnt start recording when the loop comes around, it just starts when you hit the button and It mangles the audio to match the tempo. Is it not possible?
@olivergearing12 күн бұрын
This sounds like the sorts of problems I had when I first tried to set these up. The ‘tempo control’ setting needs to be ‘follow song tempo’ and the ‘song control’ needs to be ‘none’. Quantisation should be 1 bar - which then means the looper starts and stops everything on the first beat of the next bar. Try those settings, see if it works?
@howieroll-music754011 күн бұрын
@@olivergearing Thanks for the reply. I actually did get it working. I needed to set the fist looper (or master looper) to Quantization = none, Song control = Start & Stop song and Tempo control Set & Follow song tempo. Now that I have this working, I'd like to be able to use it in a live improv setting where I am often switching instruments but also switching which instrument starts the initial loop without a bunch of hassle, changing all the settings around and just using a single midi foot controller button press. Hopefully Im not dreaming :)

I just don't understand why you would create an entire separate track just for the looper when you can just put the looper on the same track as the instrument? I suppose the point of this is to loop more than one instrument at a time?
@olivergearing24 күн бұрын
Good question. For me, I like to keep the input track separate from the looper track. It gives you greater flexibility. For example - if you wanted to change the volume of the looper - it’s easier as a separate track than using the level k ie inside. Or applying different effects. But as you say, using 1 track works as well

Thank you for this tutorial! Really great tips to make this workflow smooth. Question about the FCB1010 - I've heard mixed reviews saying that the pedal is very difficult to program... for this use in Ableton, did it require extra software or programming of the pedal itself? Or does ableton automatically read the midi notes and CC's and you just map those within abletons settings? Thanks!
@olivergearing23 күн бұрын
You definitely need to program the pedal itself. At first it seems a bit unintuitive - but once you’ve got your head around it it becomes easy. The problem for me, when I bought the pedal, was that I didn’t understand MIDI data well enough. To be honest, that issue would have made any MIDI pedal difficult to use! Now I y seat and MIDI, and have invested time in learning how to program the pedal, I think it’s one of my favourite bits of gear

Oliver the tutorial is amazing! I have watched it three times in a row already 😅. I have a 8 switch midi pedalboard and I have to adapt it to to my setup but I guess I can make it somehow. Just a quick question about the "performance track" : how do you create that one? Is the "reverb" track from Ableton? Because when I set the input and loop tracks to 100 send, every track has basically 100% reverb....what am I doing wrong? Thanks a lot!!
@olivergearingАй бұрын
Thanks! The performance track is a send track - called a ‘return track’. I like to use these as a place to send all of the outputs of my input tracks. This means that on each of the looper and input tracks, they have the send level at 100% - but they have have their output as ‘sends only’. I find this gives me the maximum control - you can treat the performance track like an ableton track - add effects to it - and it keeps the Main output clean. Hope this helps - if not - comment back and we can get into the specifics!

It might be the monitoring settings for the channels. What I do is have an input channel - where I route my mic, or guitar into. This one I set as "In" in the monitoring settings. Then I route this to a second channel - with the looper installed on - then this is able to record the first channel

@olivergearingАй бұрын
Thanks! Sounds like a classic MIDI foot switch problem. These things always seem to send more messages than you want them to. I have 3 potential suggestions: 1) buy BOME and use it as a filter - use the pedal to trigger then send exactly what you want through to your Ableton session. 2) check what exact messages the pedal is sending to Ableton - there might be more than one message. 3) check the settings in Ableton - make sure the the pedal is only set as ‘remote’ - maybe switch off ‘track’ and ‘sync’. If none of these work - sorry! It’s a bloody minefield!

For me i play multiple sounds with one keyboard for example and i don't want multiple tracks armed since I then hear the monitoring then from multiple instruments. I have started by midi mapping the record arm and triggering this from the midi trigger track - is this the best way?

@ good question. My technique was to have 1 track with an instrument chain - multiple instruments on it. I can change from (say) piano to organ using midi mapped ‘chain selector’. This way I left the channel on monitoring “in”, which meant I the keyboard was always triggering a sound, but I could select which sound using MIDI CC. Does that make sense?
