they suck not only musically and lyrically but also creatively; they have ZERO originality. they are not even good as rip-off artists. they may be popular-wouldn't pay attention enough to know-but that is more an indictment of society rather than a recognition of anything valuable.

I hate to break to you but the Beastie Boys sucked. They were just one of the first groups of white kids to try and make black music, so they got a lot of white followers.

First of all, this video is about JVB, not The Beastie Boys. Second, you may not like the Beastie Boys, and I respect your opinion, but when a group sells over 50 million records and has a career spanning over 30 years I think deserves credit. Not sure why this became about race all of a sudden.

They're one of the most groundbreaking acts in the world right now imo. What sets them apart is essentially that their nostalgia isn't occurring in a vacuum. They're clearly into plenty of modern culture, including their own contemporaries amidst a beautifully thriving UK indie culture. So they have uniquely contemporary take on the music and aesthetics of a certain era. It's in no way derivate; so much inspiration and homage is crystal clear, even explicit, yet it's still entirely original. While they evoke so much culture, both pop and alt from around Y2K, nothing at that time really looked or sounded quite like them. I always think it's interesting how artists who most fully lean into their influences end up sounding the most original... Members of Black Sabbath say they were aiming to be the next Beatles. And this trend has gone on since well prior to that, for arguably a good century now. South Arcade are carrying on the proud British lineage of indie even if so many influences are from elsewhere. Also I love that you mentioned Guano Apes, because I've been thinking that since getting into these kids' music in the last week or so. Whether or not this influence is directl, clearly they're eclectic listeners with chops and creativity. Remember as far as musical maturity, just because a band is new doesn't mean the musicians are beginners. Some people start playing at home from when they're toddlers, start playing at school early, and are in numerous bands building their overall musicianship throughout their adolescence. Emily from The Last Dinner Party (one of the world's top pioneering bands along with South Arcade imo) was already an accomplished guitarist with a formal education and eclectic musical background leading her guitar parts to be a vital aspect of the band's innovative edge. I haven't dug into the background of the members of South Arcade, but I'd wager they're all bringing some diverse combined experience. Moreover they're certainly bringing passion, drive, innovation and vision to everything they're doing. Absolutely one of top bands to watch right now, and #1 priority for me to catch in small venues while i can. Much love for supporting young artists ❤
@IndieResistanceTV11 күн бұрын
Thanks for your analysis/comment mate. I'm glad you also know Guano Apes, not that many people knows them. I agreed with everything you say. It's not as easy as it seems, to carry clear influences from an era or bands, but at the same time have your own sound and personality.
@JasonRhizome-f7h11 күн бұрын
@@IndieResistanceTVfrom what I've observed, the key is, somewhat ironically, to just fully lean into one's influences without worry about the need to be original; rather, it just occurs naturally. See the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen and Nirvana who all cut their teeth on covers and started out mostly recording other people's material with their own early stuff sounding relatively derivative, at least compared to their later work. They all loved their heroes unapologetically, and it led them to be just as revolutionary in their own right. While art is valid as long as one plays their instrument decently, and even making one popular EP is a very real achievement, I do honestly believe that South Arcade is one of the current, younger acts with the potential to be noted in a few decades as a seminal influences on their peers and successors. I know I'm glazing them pretty exuberantly, but I wager time will prove they're absolutely worth it. Plenty of people may claim they knew it early on, but you and I will share the satisfaction of knowing we meant it all along. 😉🔥

@@IndieResistanceTV great idea! Like a 5 year update maybe... I'm optimistic about their future same as TLDP, not just because they've made some great music, but because you can read from their vibe that they're naturally creative people and that they're 100% all-in on music. Wherever their path goes, these are all very promising young musicians... Which the UK seems to be so flush with these days!

Guitarist is sick but I think the singer needs to sound a little more raw. Right now they sound too “polished” is the best word I can think of. Right now it just sounds too pop to be played on rock radio.
@IndieResistanceTV5 күн бұрын
Of course that depends, maybe they're not looking to be played on rock radio but Top40s? I think that they are processing the vocals pretty well, it sits well with the rest of the music considering their style.

Good review, great band indeed. Although I wouldn't say they are that much EDM and Japanese-culture oriented, you can actually find millions of artists on Spottily fitting that exact description under labels like "Hyperpop". They actually sound like most modern Metalcore bands, which is totally fine, but even if I (as a Gen X) can understand and see the musical references, probably a Gen Z or late Millennial will only see later references... By the way, only by reading the title I was expecting something like Hamlet or El Agente Naranja :) Un saludo!
