I have assembled a similar setup to your, except using a different ttl converter. Without using any cables, just a db25 male to db9 female, and then a db8 male to male to connect to the ttl converter. I get a one way communication in that what I type in serial console in Arduino is seen on the TRS-80 Model 100 screen. But what I type on the TRS-80 does not show up on the console. I have tried disconnecting the IDE and powering the esp module with power only, as well. But TRS-80 cannot seem to make a connection to the esp. Might be a wiring/null/crossover situation, but does seem like it. If the cross over were wrong, then presumably I would get no connection. BUt I do get a one-way connection.

That handheld is so cool. Excellent job all around, especially with the comprehensive deep dive. QMTech definitely seems to have no illusions that if the average customer is buying a certain FPGA dev board, it's for retro hardware emulation.

At appoximately 6:00, you mention blowing capacitor C-25 if the wrong type of power adaptor is connected. Unfortunately, I just ran the wrong polarity through my system, and am now unable to power it on. Can you confirm that this is the likely problem, or provide any notes on your diagnosis/repair process? I appreciate you help!
@whatskenmaking2 күн бұрын
Yep, that's right - if it's a Famicom, then that's likely what happened to you as well. If you see that C25 has puffed up or opened its canister to release the magic smoke, then that would be confirmation. But even if it doesn't look visibly damaged, it won't hurt to replace it with another 1000uF cap and see if that solves the problem. It's the first component in the path of that unregulated power signal, so it's likely to be the one that blows. If it still doesn't power on, then the next thing to replace would be the 7805 voltage regulator. But I think the issue is most likely the that cap.

If you want to talk about business practices then you may want to talk about cash flow, manufacturer terms, and risk assessment. It’s very likely that this company doesn’t have unlimited funds to mass produce as many units as they like so most likely they’re limited to smaller batches and market them as limited supply due to their limited resources. (Which would also explain the scarcity of their other consoles) A more established and well funded company like Nintendo or Sony can afford to stock up on huge amounts of inventory (tying up their cash in the process) Where smaller companies have to not over stock in order to keep their operation going as they continue to grow.
@lordbacon49729 сағат бұрын
As a regular consumer, what I don't understand is why they don't keep re-making their sold out products. After selling out their initial production items, why don't they use the proceeds to order more and just keep doing this over and over? Because they don't do this, it means the decision to produce is arbitrary, leading to artificial scarcity. It's like a pizza shop decides to make this wonderful new unique pizza but only for one day, and then stop making it. Who the fk does that? This is the negative impression Analogue has created for themselves.

This was the video that made me finally REALLY understand FPGA's in relation to emulation. Thank you for providing this. Question - what is the blue device? kzbin.info/www/bejne/qX6wmnV7ndOcsKc I assume it is a MiSTer but I want to check. I love the look of it and the USB hub on the front. If you can tell me more please.

One other thing worth mentioning regarding quality - I've seen it mentioned in a few places that QMTech uses recovered (i.e used) CycloneV chips. Apparently QMTech themselves have stated this, although I haven't seen that first hand. I don't know what sort of quality control they can do to ensure these are in good condition, so it may not make any difference at all, but it's something worth bearing in mind.

So the one with built in Sdram is compatible with Mister I/O board? I would like to jump into Fpga gaming from RGB Pi for using it as a 8/16 bit computer replacement ( MSX, Amiga..). I wanna make sure that I can plug it to a CRT through Scart connector. My understanding is that I will need a VGA to Scart adapter capable of 15khz. Great video

This is my favorite thing to come out for gaming since the actual release of the Nintendo Switch. As a retro gamer primarily, the fact that for $83 total, you get a complete GB Color WITH lithium USB C rechargeable battery and 3 inch IPS screen without needing 26-year-old donor console parts is absolutely wild to me, especially considering that $83 in 2024 money would be like paying the equivalent of $40 for this in 1998 when the GB Color actually came out. Super reasonable. Can't wait until they figure out a Gameboy Advance FPGA chip.

Electrical tape would work behind the screen as well correct? Just ordered a kit and noticed it said to be careful the screen didn't touch the pins.

18:00 which newer consoles are difficult to emulate? Because the N64 isn’t, the PS1 isn’t, even the Saturn isn’t anymore, the Dreamcast isn’t, the PS2 isn’t? Xbox emulation is not there yet. From the PS3/X360 era forwards it doesn’t mostly even matter since so many games are on Steam and from PS4 era forwards consoles are useless tech and just a graveyard for games, and PC rules.
@epicon616 күн бұрын
All original hardware is inferior to emulation when it comes to playing on larger screens because OG hardware can’t be scaled up natively. It’s not a problem for a Game Boy handheld but all consoles are so much better scaled up or by increasing the internal resolution a using a CRT filter for 2D games.

I don't think Analogue is showing any moral failing, if anything they have a sub-par supply chain, but that's not evil or bad. They are offering a product for a price when they have the inventory, and we can take it or leave it. IMO $219, when it includes a SINGLE component that costs $70 and another one that costs $18, feels very reasonable, electronic components usually do not cost that much.

I have an Arc-S, I think the Sega controller scheme goes a long way and it is my most used emulation device. I don't care much about wifi, but the issue I have mine is that it does not save settings which is odd. I'm not sure if it is the SD card or the deveice itself, but it is still annoying. Shame the reception is so muted, I guess we won't see another similar 6-button device in the future.

@@whatskenmaking nifty. I guess that's a very clean board then: Instead of USB Hub + Rtc + IO just one add-on board. I just ordered a new version of the board with 2 FR4 plates instead of a full case and I am looking forward to it. I guess that the built-in fan is not as crappy as the one that came with the FPGA baseboard. Would you replace that as well (I put a copper sink on the baseboard)?
@HisVirusness20 күн бұрын
That is such a clever medium. You used it for the Konami code; I wonder what it would go into using cards to automatically perform Fatalities in Mortal Kombat. Specifically the first game, since I imagine you'd need a LOT of cards to cover every Fatality in just MK2 alone.

There shouldn’t be anything preventing it from functioning as normal, but without an IO board, you’d need to wire up a SNAC port yourself.
