And would probably have lost the Battle which would have led the End of the "Old Swiss Confederation" If it wasn't for one man. Arnold Winkelried. Not much known is about him. Not where he came from. Or who he was before the battle. We know only this. Seeing of how his comrades were dying being and of how they were losing the battle. He turned to one of his friends next to him and sayed. "Take care of my wife and children for me". Without further explanation he CHARGED at the Habsburg Pike Formation. And grabbed as many Pikes as he could to hold them down. Impaling himself in the process. This heroic deed led to a small gap in the Pike Formation of the Austrian Knights. Which the Swiss immediately charged in to fight the enemy at close range.
