Cranmer was a cinycal turncoat, when Anne Boleyn was in favour he was on her side, when she wasn’t in favour any more he abandoned her at her destiny. First Cranmer declared Anne Boleyn wedding valid, then he declared the same marriage null and void.

Exists many kinds of love, love of a son to a father, love for a brother, or even for a friend, love for God, and for a wife. He wants reap of of her to marry another woman, and for that he murder inocents. The queen should answer, "its the same love you felt for yours".

Cranmer actually tried, in a round-about way, to defend her, though his heart wasn't in it because he knew it was too dangerous to resist the king's, and Cromwell's, will. I don't believe he thought she was guilty and I don't think, if he visited her in the Tower, that he was so cold and judgemental of her. But yes, he abandoned her to save his own neck, for sure.

Good God, the English diet consisted of tons of meat, poultry, bread and sweetened fruits. I know that Catherine of Aragon had attempted to improve things by introducing fish, vegetables and other healthy aspects of the Mediterranean diet, but I guess all that went by the wayside after her downfall.

The English king Henry the 8th diet consisted of mainly meat but that doesn't mean it's true for the million or three people of England at this time ...

Poor Anne, she is always depicted as a manipulative power hungry man eater. In the years of their courtship , before her marriage, she seems to have been treated by Henry in a reverential ,chivalrous way. It lasted long enough for her to feel confident that she knew him and was safe and loved. I wonder how much it shocked and terr8fied her when after years of loyal, chivalrous courtship , it became clear to her that in the position of wife she had actually lost romantic status and would now be the victim of his diminishing interest. When did she realise that she was not immune to the cruelty he could show to those for whom he no longer had a use.and did it dawn on her slowly or was there one particular moment of clarity and terror

The actor that played Cranmer was really good. I think he also played him in the TV series. In terms of a comparison to his portrait pretty much a dead ringer.

For anyone wondering about the Rogation Days: they are three penitential days of prayer on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before Ascension Thursday. In 1536 Easter Sunday fell on 16 April, and thus Ascension Thursday was on 25 May. The Rogation Days would have been 22, 23, and 24 May. Anne Boleyn was executed on 19 May. Cranmer is reminding the King of the limited time to announce the betrothal if the marriage is to take place after Ascension.

Try the Anne Boleyn episode next. Dorothy Tutin was a great actress. Sadly she died of dementia some years ago after appalling treatment in a care home. Her daughter has tirelessly campaigned for better care ever since. I saw Dorothy Tutin as Peter Pan in 1970 at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon!

I think Henry in a way did respect Catherine because she was a good wife and a fierce woman that defended England from Scottish invaders. But because of the heavy promise and burden legacy, he vowed to his father to have sons to carry on his name. I am sure many of you know of the results of his quest to sire a son. Six marriages, change of religion, and executed anyone who dared to defy him.

I’m sure she did a fantastic job as the young Catherine of Aragon, but I will NEVER see Annette Crosbie as anyone other than the great Queen Victoria in the epic BBC series, Edward The Seventh (1975).

Very odd scene. It’s partly using Cranmer’s own words from his letter to Henry, but instead of him trying to distance himself from a woman he knows is innocent but is no longer safe to support, it’s as if he’s trying to ease the king’s guilty conscience. A conscience we have no evidence of from the historical record. If Henry needed convincing that she was guilty, and felt any remorse at her execution, he had a funny way of showing it. Also, while Rampling’s Anne is seductive and captivating, it’s also completely one dimensional and far too cruel. At least in the series, which only focuses on her downfall, she’s at least more admirable, complex and fiesty as played by Tutin.

It was usually for one of three reasons. First, to allow for massive clean ups due to the fact that living conditions were unsanitary. Residents and servants even urinated, or perhaps worse, in various parts of the palaces. Second, outbreaks of the plague were common in the cities, so the Court would retreat to a country residence. Third, Henry often went on "progresses", which were essentially tours of the country so that he could meet the people.
