To make this video more general, the conversation isn't left or right side. The conversation is: Curb side, or traffic side. If we dream of ever having curbside charging infrastructure, the port has to be curbside. Here in North America, way too many EVs have their charging port on the traffic side. That will make it difficult and troublesome to ever add curbside charging. There are folks that have to park on the street either permanently or often for a million reasons. The thought that companies/utilities may choose not to add curbside charging infrastructure because way too many cars have the charging port on the traffic side is a blow to electrification. And yes, I know that streets exist that are both one way and allow parking on both sides. Those aren't many. That's not the macro problem.

At our house, we discussed the Smart cars as a potential EV option but the busy, cartoon'ish screen interface was an instant emphatic no. Why they would create such a messy, ugly interface is hard to fathom. Smart, have a look at Polestar Font/Colors/Interface - now, that is more like it! Would an alternative solution be for the tesla charger to be positioned in the middle of the parking bay (not at the side) - and a longer cable might still be needed - allowing cars with charging ports on either side to use them? [Of course, I don't believe realistically Tesla would change the position of existing chargers, but perhaps now that they are making a lot of their chargers - including future ones - available to non-Tesla vehicles, it would be a welcome move]

You have to be taking the piss....🤔 The design flaw is from EV manufacturers like yours, who designed and sold EVs without any consideration about where they should have the charging port. They didn't build a charging network, they just sold you the EV and didn't consider the fact their customers may want to use the worlds biggest and most reliable EV charging network. The problem is obviously any EV with a charge port not on the rear left or front right....not the Tesla Supercharger. So IMO Tesla should charge 50% more for charging an EVs like yours to charge to pay for the changes your manufacturer didn't do in its initial design. You may then avoid Tesla Supercharger but then Tesla owners are not inconvenienced buy your purchasing decision.

Alot of first world problems raised here. I'm thankful we have chargers installed in more areas. Tesla to open them up to us non Tesla drivers. Beats nothing. Longer cables and screens also don't come free. Both can be subjected to abuse or misuse with added risks and therefore comes as an additional cost. Additionally there are technical limitations with cable length. No, I agree with Telsa deployment strategy here. Limiting the "nice to haves" and keep the important root function- of charging a car -and put the savings into more chargers.

I've been guilty of this at this very same Kilmore Supercharger. My BYD Seal had a driver's side rear port, so I needed to use the adjacent spot to plug in. Fortunately I only needed a quick charge and was able to have a coffee at a Cafe that could see the bays. At the time I was the only vehicle there, but that may not always be the case. Disappointingly, they were adding new bays next to it, but still had the new chargers installed at the side, rather than at the centre back or with a longer cable.

The only issue I've experianced was at Knockrow when there was an area blackout, which of couse was impacting anyone in the area. I like the Tesla ones too, as its such a low chance of a queue given the amount of chargers. I avoid any travel on holiday periods if I can. Also the large amount of chargers and non-tritum means broken changers are less frequent and even if one or two are offline, there will be one working chager. For me, travel between home in sydney and my inlaws house on the mid north coast is now stress free thanks to the Tesla ones at Raymond Terrace, Taree and Port Mac.

Glad to hear you've had a positive experience with open access Tesla Superchargers along NSW coast North of Sydney, another frequent viewer Alex has told me the same thing
@alexsimmons180311 күн бұрын
I plan my NSW Pacific highway trips around where the all-access Tesla superchargers are for these reasons. The one issue I've had is when the mobile phone signal is poor (e.g. Thrumster) or nonexistent, as using the Tesla app is the only way to commence a charge session for non-Tesla vehicles. It also affects the crappy Tritium NRMA chargers at the same location (no RFID or plug 'n' charge option).
@NeeravBhatt10 күн бұрын
That Thrumster location is a challenging spot for charging, I'll try and let Tesla know though they are notoriously hard for media to contact. I wish all EV charging networks supported RFID card or plug and Autocharge based on car ID like Evie
@CampbellMorkham11 күн бұрын
Tesla Superchargers are excellent but there are some caviats.. A minor point is that Tesla V3 Superchargers don't charge at the optimum rate on some 800V Architecture vehicles. For example the BYD Seal will charge at about 110kW rather than 150kW (vehicle maximum below 65% SoC). Overall this doesn't have a huge impact as it only results in a few minutes difference. One other point is that V3 Superchargers have short cables and can not often reach charging ports on the drivers side rear. Owners need to occupy the bay beside the one they plan to use, thus blocking out 2 spots. These issues are all resolved in the V4 Superchargers now being delivered.
@NeeravBhatt10 күн бұрын

I've been using the NRMA Yass charger for about 4 years now, and it really does take a hammering. While it is indeed due for replacement, and the same might be said for others on the major trunk routes, there are many other chargers just like it further west that soldier on without major issues. There is one in my town in the Riverina and two more within an hour or so drive, none of which have suffered from major issues. A hiccough here and there but none of this "down for weeks" stuff. Rather than take a "you must replace them all" approach, which NRMA would likely reject out of hand for financial reasons, concentrating your efforts on places on the main routes like Yass, Holbrook etc would cover off the major pain points and be potentially a more palatable course for NRMA's bean counters to consider. Their replacement would also provide a parts source for the remaining 50kW units until their turn for replacement comes. In the longer term, it worries me that NRMA, being the primary source of chargers for non-Teslas early on in the piece, at least in NSW, might look at the charging market now and decide they're not needed anymore and not bother replacing troublesome chargers like Yass. I'd rather they concentrate on what needs doing immediately and get the revenue that comes from that rather than waste money replacing chargers that work ok, even if not particularly fast by current standards .
@NeeravBhatt11 күн бұрын
Thanks for that sharing your detailed local experience Martin. You're right replacing the Hume Highway NRMA 50kW units first would be good but the country town 50Kw off highways also should be upgraded so EV road tripping drivers have confidence they'll work and ideally be 150Kw
