Hi there. Edwin Starr actually sang the demo version of KWS' 1992 UK No. 1 "Please Don't Go" (a KC cover) before the band was even formed, however Delroy St Joseph sang on the final recording. Chris King, one of the band's keyboard players, was a northern soul DJ, so that's how he would have met Edwin. The demo was recorded in a little studio on Boyer Street in Derby, the next city west from Nottingham. Chris was actually from Ilkeston, my hometown. There is also a performance of "Stop Her On Sight" available on KZbin from 1982 which states all musicians were from Nottingham, except the backing singers, because one was Butch Leake who was in The Drifters in the 70s. Edwin also frequently performed at the Twisted Wheel northern soul club in Manchester before he even moved to the UK, and was the very last act to perform there in 1971. So Edwin had ties with the Midlands for more than 30 years before he died, and was probably drawn there by his popularity in the northern soul scene, which originated out of Midlands cities such as Manchester, Blackpool, Stoke and Wolverhampton. He previously lived in Stoke when he first came to the UK, then Pooley Hall Manor House in Polesworth, Birmingham from 1985 which he renovated, and also lived at a house on Calvert Close in Chilwell, a Nottingham suburb between the towns of Toton and Beeston. He clearly loved the English Midlands and his fanbase there very much.

Nice presentation, ¿but was it by chance the Ahmet Ertegun award at the R&R Hall of Fame? You kind of mispronounced the name, correct me if I'm wrong, please. Ahmet Ertegun wrote and produced Ray Charles first hit "Mess Around", and helped a lot of artists subsequently.
