You are so right about there's too many competition, when Brexit happened alot of tech companies moved here in Ireland from the UK needless to say there was an ocean of tech jobs, I always loved technology and thought it was My calling so I went ahead and did My A+ cert, couldnt land a job and thought that ok it's an entry level cert maybe I need to level up My game, eventually got a Net+ cert and still no one wants to hire, these companies and majority of them do not want entry level techies only call centers want them and even then they outsource call center agents from abroad... trying to get a Sec+ now and hopefully this will be it.

The thing I am seeing is that the "entry level software developer/engineer" job title is disappearing; you need to be mid-level and upwards. Meaning need to have a mixture of frontend, backend, devops and cloud expertise. Essentially you need to be full-stack in a way and most entry guys and gals don't have all of that at once. I can't speak on your sub-sector (IT Helpdesk) as you are more well-versed.

I always think it's funny when I hear people say A.I. will replace engineers. 1. if that's the case why doesn't chatGPT code itself, 2. if it gets rid of harder jobs what would make you think that it wouldn't get rid of the easier jobs and 3. Even if it did there would still be other opportunities like building your own software, building apps for small businesses that can't afford an A.I server and database, and developers funding their own business as a collective and crush the top companies.
@juiceytech18 күн бұрын
Yup. I agree with you

One things I've noticed as a software engineer is that many companies can get by without adding features after a certain point. What they can't do is get by if the phones aren't working, if the CEO can't print reports...FWIW I don't think software engineering is going anywhere anytime soon. AI is currently a tool but not a replacement. What's going to happen is that many juniors and career changers are going to need to embrace lower salaries and lateral moves like starting as a QA or in support. Last thing I'll say is that twitter is a dumpster fire and a lot has to do with the layoffs. Some companies won't advertise on there because the investment in moderation is gone. Some companies may see the same result from laying off engineers.

I don't think the majority of laid off software engineers are any good (not all, just the majority) and that's why they got selected to be laid off. There were probably many that were good and got let go due to company financial reasons. Either way, who can easily make the distinction between two people with FAANG experience and varying capabilities? That alone makes the hiring manager's job of digging thru applications a chore and dilutes the applicant pool with "qualified applicants".
@catalinul570021 күн бұрын
In the pandemic companies received funding from governs to support them hire more people, the pandemic is gone, the fundings are gone, and now companies get rid of the surplus. Problem is that anyone can be laid off.

@@catalinul5700 If you had your own business and had to let some staff go, would you start with cutting the best people first? Probably not. I'd think that most businesses would make cuts that have the least impact. That's not to say no good employees are let go.

I dont see what he is trying to say ? I think whats happening is this 2 things 1> One is the market has cooled down due to Fed + Over hiring 2> Market is saturated with products and services that can now scale for good amount of time. Regarding Software Engineer vs IT, the rise of IT is because of this segment called DevOps, As engineers have already done loads of heavy lifting work, Devs ops are now seen enough skills to put things in order, lowering the demand of SE altogether. Having said that, I think it will never be a time of SE forever, because AI do allows implementation easier faster cheaper !!
