Great little machines i had one in the 90s when i lived in Holland they were known as 'broomers' they could be ridden legally on the cycle paths Ideal for getting to work. Could fit a crate of 24 beers sat nicely between your knees above the tank and someone perched on the back rack on a supermarket run for supplies. My flatmate also had a bright yellow one that had been through the hands of a bike mechanic who'd worked for a racing team ...god knows what had been done to it? Sluggish off the mark but once it got going it would pass and leave the latest/best (at the time) 50cc scooters in its wake To the surprise and disgust of i might add haha Great times

I had an M reg Orange Puch Maxi as my first bike on L plates when I was 16 back in the earlier 80s. The engine would occasionally run backwards and very interesting at traffic lights. Embarrassed riding it especially as my mates had DT50, TS50 plus the latter gutless F1SIE!! Joyful memories!!!! Before I was 17 I progressed to a Puch MV50 ex London Post Office, bit more cred with the girls😂

I had a purple one in 1982 at 16, what a machine, gave me freedom on the road without cycling. Broke down once and cycled it home 4 miles and thought I was going to have a heart attack, and I had actually cycled 8000 miles that year. Amazing simple thing, hahaha took the exhaust baffle out, maybe so even more people would look at the idiot on the Puch. What a machine very in keeping with the current economic circumstances now that | think about it. Biggest problem was keeping the power on going through the Clyde tunnel as being 2 stroke if you freewheeled on a trailing throttle it wanted to seize of course as no lub going through, learned that lesson quickly. Progressed to an ss50 with c70 barrel and head , a real bike 🙂

Well over 100 mpg and the ability to lift it over fences and gates, makes it a very capable little adventure bike. Expect over 10 hour days in the saddle, and a very sore arse, for very short journeys of a couple of hundred miles. I once rode a Honda Camino from Kent to Devon and it was a very long and painful ride, but it got me there, and home again. I had to pedal it hard up most gradients, and against the wind, and it had absolutely zero compression by the time I got back, and it had quite a few extra dents all over it where I needed to kick the shit out of it every 20 miles. I'm not saying it wasn't an adventure though 😁

Yes had one in 1974 bought it brand new it cost me a princely sum of £95 including road fund license mine was a Bright Yellow Puch Maxi two speed which was quite rare. To be honest every time it was damp I spent more times pushing it as it wouldn’t start . Ended up pushing it home from work and being an Asthmatic wasn’t a good experience. Traded it in for a brand new purple Yamaha FS1E , Which cost me a Grand some of £165 . But do agree with you small capacity bikes are great fun .

Absolutely brilliant to see this. I have a few myself (I am embracing my midlife crisis 😂) if you haven't already got a plan in terms of improving performance give me a shout, I did a 1979 Maxi S recently on a budget and the results where impressive vs. standard. 70cc , 15mm Bing replica & bi turbo exhaust have seen 46mph (probably got a bit more but didn't want to hurt it too much) also much better on the low end too. Kind regards Adam
